- 2007 Mercedes GL450 - what are the problems? How does it compare to other or newer SUV's? Is it expensive to own? Why are they so cheap? What should I be on the look-out for?
The 2007 Mercedes GL450 is a big, smooth, good-looking and nice-driving SUV that should be at the top of your search list for a luxury 3rd row SUV under $10,000
But there are some things to know and some things to look out for, like the Mercedes GL450 air suspension which can be expensive to fix. Mercedes GL450 maintenance is no big deal but GL450 oil changes require a special version of Mobil 1 synthetic oil. GL450 power is outstanding and you can still expect 18+ mpg combined driving.

Mercedes GL450 long term review with high miles
The Fast Lane With Joe Tunney
I bought my 2007 new for around $89k. It's still going strong in 2023. I use a non Mercedes mechanic, he allows me to purchase my own parts most of which I find on Amazon for a fraction of OEM costs. I have owned many different vehicles in the last 30 years. From Rolls Royce, Range Rover and Jaguar (nightmare electrical issues in all British vehicles) to American Luxury like Cadillac and Lincoln (disgraceful quality)the Mercedes GL450 is my favorite vehicle of them all. The exterior is showing wear on the clear coat due to the extreme temps in Phoenix however the interior is excellent for it's age. I must say when this vehicle takes it's last trip. I will definitely replace it with another Mercedes GLS model.
Same I own a 08 gl450 with 250k miles on it , love it runs like a champ , never a problem and when this one breaks down I’m getting another one 😊
I would not recommend a new GLS. They have a lot of issues and are super unreliable. My best friend’s mom had a 2020 and has a 2021 and both had many issues. Also a lot of people have had bad experiences with new Mercs not just my friend’s mom.
Very good car. I bought my Gl450 in 2007 Believed me one of the best car I had. I bought a suburban in 3 years transmission gone. I bought an Cadillac Escalade too much sensors issues on and on. In 5 years engine gone and in 4 years transmission gone.
Escalade is very reliable and way confortable than the GL450 but for better quality Gl450 is the winner
@@Mrwinecontrerasgot 278k on mine runs like clockwork lol
Mines at 157k 6/3/24 and still has ice cold AC and runs strong!! Replaced the MAF with Bosch OEM part no other issues only maintenance and fluids and filters
I never though that Jason Statham would be the best car youtuber! Straight forward information about a life with a GL450! Thank you very much for sharing!
Great videos on the GL450, truly appreciate that you shared your real-life ownership and experience of the vehicle through the years. Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for taking a look, I appreciate it!
Hello Joe, I want to say thank you for such a comprehensive overview of your GL450 after having owned it for 7 years.....I watched your previous video prior when you has just arrived in Hawaii. I'm in the market for a 7 seater luxury SUV as a nice step up from my 2002 X5 which I've owned for 4 years and is still running relatively well. I'll definitely be thorough in my examination when I get one in the coming weeks/months and your overview was extremely helpful!
Take good care and God Bless
My 07 GL450 is at 140k miles and it’s still running strong. Only thing I had to replace recently is the water pump seized. Got it for 10k couple years back.
Definitely I can agree with you It's on the G L450 or 550, they are very reliable and dependable. If you keep maintaining regular service oil change, basically needs and take good care of it it will last...I own 2012GL450 I still own it today i will definitely give it to my daughter when she's old enough to drive because it a verysafe suv9.......now I own 2021 GLS63 AMG and it amazing suv, Is the technology the room not to mention the speed I love it ..... good luck to your.....👍🇺🇸👍🇺🇸
Great video! The GL really looks like MB’s version of the Land Cruiser. That’s our favorite beach on the Big Island too!
I have a 2007 GL450 as well with 172k miles and still driving and looking like new. I keep mine inside my garage and so still looking like new. It still has a very smooth transmission and I have not heard any major issues with this SUV at all. Occasionally, it will throw a check engine light for catalytic inefficiency but that is only because I do not drive it much since I work 15 minutes from my house. The light always clears out when I take it for a longer drive.
Just picked up a white 2011 Gl450 for 7k with 96k, had a mechanic inspection and needs nothing. Excited to put this thing to use. Good to hear these aren't junk like some of the Mercedes I've been through.
Great video ! I am a Mechanic and would like to offer advice to your slow cranking problem. I would recommend that a starting system voltage drop test be performed.
How long would it take to change the starter.
Thank you great video I am thinking on buying a GL 450 2010
Definitely wanna see an update glad you put these vids up very informative and helpful to consider different things about the car before purchasing
I have a 08 and it has 178,000 and it runs like a champ!!
Is the maintenance expensive?
@@amberh7098 It is, I work on mine.
Get the intake Manifold looked at. my 08 gl450 had that same issue it was going through so much oil. once i replaced it, it wasn’t going Through so much oil anymore
I have the same exact car and love it. The stickiness on the steering wheel and near the headlamp knob can be removed using windex and cloth. It is just a layer of coating on the plastic parts. Take a bit of time but I got rid of them all and now looks just like new.
Had my kid sit there with a sponge for a while. Lol
those rubber coating will deteriorate after 7 years or so, or faster if the car is not garaged.
you can buy replacement parts on ebay or aliexpress.
those Chinese made parts seems to fit well and of good quality.
I had to replace the headlamp control panel, steering wheel buttons left and right, and driver side window control unit
with inexpensive Chinese knock off, but they all seem to work ok.
Wife will most definitely be driving locally and a few trips to L.A durring the week.. Your posts have been awesome
The weak starter is symptoms of a starter going bad. I had the same issue and I replaced the starter and it now starts quicker like new.
I own a 2010 Gl450
Crazy thing...we replaced the starter 7 years ago. Didn't help.
Great review, I was going to suggest Mobul 1 as oil for starting problems, you already got that covered, maybe try using K&N Airfilters, I have used them on all my Mercedes for 16 years with no problems and always use Varta batteries, otherwise you just waste money!
I want one for a Taxi with LPG, getting old and want the best! My back can´t take an S-Clas so I need the SUV!
I'm actually looking at one of these to replace my E350. I'm considering the GL450 or a Porsche Cayenne. Living on the East coast you can get away with a car but I drive a lot and have come across situations a car can't overcome. Like in Annapolis we get flooded regularly especially when a full moon is out and we have a high tide. Some back roads get high water. Also these back roads don't always get plowed and end of having ice or just too steep for rwd to climb even with winter tires. Same for Baltimore and Laurel where they both get ice on steep grade.
I love this car. I have 2013 E350 Sport Package with peanut butter interior, rwd. A surprise to me but this car gets excessive attention, that's a other reason I want to move away from it. I see it as a basic sedan, others seem to see it as something else. I get as much attention as a Corvette, so yeah I'm ready to move on from the fish bowl experience 😅
The oil consumption I think is typical across all Mercedes regardless of year or generation. My 13' E350 does the exact same thing and I know some guys with older Mercedes from the 80s that do the exact same regardless of gas or diesel.
Regarding the key ignition, my car does the same thing. Doesn't matter if I use the key or push to start. What I've noticed is if I turn to the on position wait a half a second or less but pause then turn on, it fire right up with no cranking. Could be a starter issue honestly but regardless I've never had it not start even when I've drained the battery by accident. I think it has 2 batteries honestly.
I'm not exactly sure about your lift gate issue. On my car it did get stuck a couple times, but I used a silicone based spray I use to treat my sunroof on the rubber seals and I've yet to have another occurrence.
I'd check the rubber and treat it, check the shocks for age. Sometimes only 1 will go bad. I know I have to change my hood struts in a few months. Also you could clean the strut assembly with microfiber towel to remove debris from age. I think WD-40 works, don't quote me on that, think Scotty Killer recommended that.
So what happened to it now I was eagerly awaiting your next update after this lol
That’s strange, my 2007 GL450 came with a rear view camera
Just hit 160,000 miles. Very happy with it
@airborn is it still good . I think about buying one
Now 164k.Everyting works, Loads of room in the 3 rows of seats. Replaced front air shocks, repainted left rear fender (clearcoat was coming off). Looks great, pleasure to drive. I use liqui-moly in the engine coolant and oil (just me).
The biggest problem with this SUV is the air suspension. It’s very prone to failure and it costs $8000 to get all of them fixed. At a certain point in time it could mechanically total the SUV. The ride is amazing and the interiors are great but The failing air suspension is the biggest issue.
all Mercedes air suspension is designed to have the rubber air suspension bags replaced every 10 years or so.
If you can do the work yourself, it will cost less than $1000 for all 4 bags.
It's not uber difficult, but you will need proper tools, but can be done at home.
Not that expensive to replace. About $600 each corner at an independent mercedes shop. Well worth it for the velvet smooth ride
Ours costs only $2000. Wherever you went or told you that is ripping you off. Find a local independent mechanic shop as prices varies.
You've been scammed lol
Any update? I’m thinking of getting a 1 owner with 145k miles! Any update would be great! Especially approaching the 200k mile mark.
Did u get it
I enjoyed the video. On the other hand, any vehicle will be pretty good if well maintained. I would like to see a video on how much money was dumped into this to keep it running. I own a LX470 so it would be nice to compare the difference
Thanks for taking a look Evan! I did a video either a year or two years ago when this had 150k and added EVERYTHING from tires and brakes, air suspension, the whole thing added to what I paid for it. All-in including buying the Benz is $30,000. I've had it for 10 years and could sell it for say, $8000. So, it cost me $22,000 over 10 years (this guy can go another 10 years so I'm not selling it anytime soon) but as it stands, if I sold it today it cost me about $185 a month to own a 3 year old Mercedes with a nearly $80,000 MSRP for 10 years...and that's BY FAR the worst (financially) buy of any vehicle I've ever made. Just based on price, not service, if I sold this Mercedes for zero, my entire lifetime of vehicles bought and sold including all of my wife's cars over the past 23 years equals a profit of $8800. I NEVER sell something for less than I paid for it, ever...except in this case because my wife really wanted this Mercedes and treasures it to death. That being said, my favorite SUV ever is still your LX470 as I mentioned in my video on it ruclips.net/video/W1QU0ykGU5Q/видео.html and my wife loved her 2000 LandCruiser (bought for 19k and sold 2 years later for 20k) and 2003 GX470 (bought for 19k and sold 3 years later for 19k so that we could buy the Mercedes) almost as much as she loves this Mercedes.
@@everycarSeattle thanks for the reply, Joe. I enjoy all your videos.you are the reason I bought my LX470 although it is not a 2006! They are getting hard to find for the right price. I also own a CL550 which has cost me an arm and leg to maintain. Looking forward to more videos. You must have been an exceptional car salesman!
As my wife likes to say "if you have a guilty-enough conscious, it's amazing the mountains you can move." If you've seen my speech video you'll know I fell behind in life quite a bit when I was younger but ran pretty fast once I figured it all out
How many miles on it now?Hope it's going strong.
THANKS FOR SHARING KEEP IT GOING JOHN PLEASE SHARE EVERY 5K TO 10K MILES💪
Never really cared for the GL until I drove my boss's truck, it felt surprisingly agile and quick for a vehicle it's size! Thanks for extra info. Subbed!
@@sevarudov1724 piss yourself and cry lol
Howz it Joe? Nice review brah!! I'm looking to buy this exact vehicle with 98k miles on it and you've helped me solidify my decision - mahalo!!!
The air suspension does not hold up when driven hard, mine broke after 2k miles. Swapped to normal suspension, much more rugged now
That would be my first go to with a broken air suspension. It's nice sure, but way more expensive to fix than the standard suspension swap.
What Shoks spring did you use for the conversion?
that vehicle is very nice, doesnt look 13 years old, thats what i like about it
I found one with 211000 miles and they want 2000 for it. Is it worth buying?
I have one and it never breaks man... its a Mercedes so you good
Yes run it to the ground till it breaks
Mercedes yes yes yes
BMW no no no
Nissan yes yes yes yes
Ford no no
Toyota yes yes yes yes
I have a 2008 with 250k miles on it. Never a problem love it 3 years ownership
Thank you excellent review
Man.. I'm getting the wife a Used GL 450... After some research .. I wanted a Diesel Blu Tech.. We will be living in Ventura, Co, (Port Hueneme) .. But I will be traveling to L.A .. The Valley And Hollywood. I will have another car for this.. but we will use the GL to travel on weekends
great video, thanks for posting. Trying to figure out your cost based on the two videos you made. It sounded ilke you bought it at 3 years old in 2010 at 65,000 miles for $18,000. I bought my 2007 GL 450 10 years old with 57,000 miles for $15,000. I've had it for the last 6 years and have paid $22,500 in repairs and maintenance with the dealership. I have another pending repair needed. Trying to determine whether to pump more money into it. Thanks for your opinion.
They get very sensitive after 100k… Dealerships will show absolutely NO mercy.
Thank you, Joe. Very helpful. Do you have any videos on who you are / how you live in Hawaii with a family your size!? Cheers
Hello Joe, can you speak on the airmatic suspension and it's challenges long term?
Yes the dealer maintenance is expensive but still cheaper than a car payment. My 2010 E class has well over 200k miles and no issues I drive it everywhere and still take it to the dealer for everything. It’s giving me no reason to get a new car so I’m going to drive it until the wheels fall off.
E Class vs GL are 2 different Tales. E CLASS Mercedes are the sweet spot for Affordable Style.. GL was manufactured in Alabama 🙄…. Im currently trying to think of what to say to my Mother, trying to convince her to GET OUT while she can.. I’m currently wrestling a power steering leak on her 2008 GL450 (the Dealership gave an estimate of $5327 for Power steering pump, fluid reservoir and steering rack): oh.. but that estimate is from 2 years ago and now they say that they no longer service that year’s model (it’s too old, they said): … I have a 2004 S430 m113 engine with 189k and still more confidently reliable… I’m too chicken to own a Mercedes past 2006 😅
@@OG_DIY the E class is way better.
Mine has the backup camera but no wood grain steering wheel. The steering wheel is the only thing mine doesn't have, and I gotta say it buns me out because I'm a huge fan of wood grain wheels lol
I have the exact same car and model year (even color), and it uses one quart of oil every 12,000 miles.
has this car ever left you on the half way somewhere ? Say suddenly broke and engine stopped? Thanks
Put Mickey Thompson’s on mine. Very nice ride for family, and my 2007 has a backup camera?
Change the starter out should take care of that
2010 gl450 with 135k still going strong over here.
Thanks for the video, well done
Bloopers seriously made my day
That’s awesome!!! What type of gas do you use for your gl?
Hi Joe! I just bought a ML350, 2011 model. The engine makes a really weird noise at cold start and it lurches for a few seconds, then begins driving normally. Can I send a video of this for you to see? What is the best email address for you? Much appreciated
Good sir,
Please what engine oil and oil grade do you use to service this SUV?
Thanks
What is the best reliable engine choice for this car ??
Hello Joe. I have a 2011 Gl450 with 135k miles. Did you have any problems with shudder when taking off especially on a hill.
Great video ... u just got a sub👍🏼
It is a nice video but please don’t call it a truck
who tf cares dude ofc you have an f350 profile
It’s body on frame with a locking diff
MB classifies it as a truck fyi
It is an truck
It’s a truck
Have you changed the starter. How long a job is it?
Found a 2007 with 232,000 for $6k with great maintenance. Is it worth buying with that high mileage. How long do these motors go with great maintenance?
did you buy it?
I heard they can go over 400,000 miles with maintenance on time. I say do it if you’re willing to maintain the car forever.
Thinking about a 2008 model with 165k miles
If the price is low and the suspension checks out, you're good to go
Does the 2nd row fold down incase I want even more cargo space?
yes
Can the air suspension be changed to shocks & springs…like what’s on ML350?
This isn't a truck
Omg that was my biggest issue with his review. ITS NOT EVEN BASED ON A TRUCK LIKE A SEQUOIA IS
How is it upholding currently?
I sold it a couple of years ago to my neighbor and not only is it his daily driver still, he keeps it A LOT cleaner than I ever did
Too much moneyI have a Lexus Lx450 1996 It 320,000 miles same engine, same transmission. No problem, just regular maintenance a lot better car
ride quality of a benz is what u pay for bud
@@Nh0001 What Quality so you can buy now a Benz 2020 and Lexus 2020 so it is no different.Maybe the only difference is because you for the name of the benz but with this kind de cars you became very good friend with your mechanic
@@miguelangelvster Mercedes doesn't care about being reliable because they know people will buy them no matter what. They already know Lexus is more reliable, but they feel like they are too high and mighty to ride in a Lexus. They need to impress their stupid ass friends.
Does all this refer to only 450 and not to all GL class range?
450 is the safest bet… you have to imagine that more power applied to the same chassis, can equal more stress and less life for an engine.
I have a 07 Gl 450 it has 230, 000 miles on it I don’t know if I should start saving money to buy another engine still runs good but I’m afraid it will start failing since such high mileage
Hey any issues encountered around 160-230k miles? Any major repairs?
@@filthysoap96 no brother just doing normal maintenance (oil change tune up) it will take you a long way this engines can make it up 400, 000 doing regular maintenance on time this weekend I service my cousin 2001 ml320 I was shocked he hadn’t change the oil for 5 years and how smooth that engine was running after I service it.

You might as well just keep it until it gives up the ghost
Mine is an 07 and has the rear camera
do u kno how or where to install it if u dont have it ?
it's not a truck bro. SUV
Have you tried Mobil 1 high-mileage 0-40W Euro blend? Perhaps that might reduce amount of oil consumed?
It's all I ever use Richard and I always order it and bring it to the shop (with the Mahle filter, etc etc) to make absolutely sure I'm not getting bulk oil and cheapo stuff...but it keeps going through just a little bit of oil and still drives like new. It's weird, but it's been that way since forever

I have one but it’s from 2010
Not a truck but an SUV
What you call a truck is called a pickup truck.
Where, in your opinion, do you imagine that oil goes every 1k miles?
Burns it? Totaled.
Leaks into the heads? Totaled.
Leaks out from crappy seals? Totaled. You just don’t know it yet.
These are notorious for being terrible.
I love mine people be like buy a new one I'm no I love my 2008 to death!!! 💜💜

It's not a truck
well, some people call SUV's "trucks", as opposed to "cars".
cars being sedans, coupes, convertibles, roadsters, stationwagons, etc.
