    The cool thing about electric 4x4's is that by having a motor on each wheel you are eliminating 90% of the drivetrain complication it takes to power all 4 wheels from a single motor. There is no need for a transmission, a dual speed transfer case, two drive shafts, or 3 locking diffs to truly power all 4 wheels. The computer, along with 4 electric motors essentially accomplishes all the performance goals of the highest tier 4x4's with all the bells and whistles without all the parts. I was surprised the Rivian Rep didn't mention all of this but perhaps he thought it was too technical for the audience? Personally if I was the rep I would be leaning into this fact.
    Motors on each wheel gives the same level of traction offroad as a Jeep or Land Rover with front and rear locking diffs. Usually those locking diffs are only offered on the highest tier models. The vast majority of 4x4's don't have locking diffs and really only power one wheel on each axel at a time. The wheel being powered on open diff trucks and SUVs will be the one with least resistance, which is the most likely one to spin when you get stuck, while the wheel with traction doesn't move! I'm sure this vehicle is incredibly capable in very challenging terrain and will keep moving when only two wheels have traction.

    • @FluffyGoat91515
      @FluffyGoat91515 2 года назад +3

      More like 10-15 minutes. 20 at most. The R1S can charge at over 200 kW.
      “But I can refuel in 5 minutes with my ice car!!!!”
      Yes, but here’s the thing:
      You need to stay with the car while you fuel (don’t need to do that with an EV since the charger locks to the car)
      You don’t need to worry about toxic fumes (electricity - duh.)
      It’s safer. People who drive ice cars are driving around with FLAMMABLE liquid in the tanks of their cars. (Gasoline)
      While the car charges, you can go do other things, like shop, eat, or play. When you come back, the car is fully charged. The vehicle constantly monitors the battery, it’s thermals (hot/cold), and what the current is, how fast it’s charging, etc.
      So to answer your statement, EVs are:
      Safer (lower center of gravity helps In preventing rollovers, no engine and gas tank means a bigger crumple zones for impacts, the battery is mounted under the floor to prevent/minimize cabin intrusion, as well as batteries are more resistant to catching fire)
      Easier to live with (charge at home/work, and fast charge in as little as 10 minutes)
      Better performing (0-60, top speed, more agile due to lower center of gravity, etc)
      Also, get this:
      Even if an EV is powered by 100% dirty power (coal/oil), it’s STILL cleaner than an ICE vehicle.

    • @sdtaylor07
      @sdtaylor07 2 года назад +6

      As an EV owner, the idea that we have to stop for an hour each time to charge during road trips is just not accurate, or at least it doesn’t have to be. If you’re a non Tesla owner, you can use sites such as “a better route planner” to find the faster chargers, otherwise you will be using level 2 chargers during road trips, which is not what you want. Teslas obviously have the supercharger network, which will give you more than enough charge in an hour, with most charging stops being 15-30 minutes.
      Will it take more time to “fill-up” than an ICE vehicle? Absolutely. 2 minutes vs 20 minutes is pretty noticeable. But the idea that you must stop for an hour every time you charge is false and need not be spread as if it’s accurate information.

Makes you wonder why other conpanies, mainly Lucid, are asking such higher prices for less desireble and less practical electric car. Good, upbeat review. Thanks. Couple of suggestions. First, the Rivian Adventure Network (the proprietary Rivian DC fast charging and level 2 network) also includes interstates, not just trailheads. Rivian has the approximate locations of their chargers published on their website. Second, while the only "seven passenger" BEV that you compare the R1S to is the Tesla Model X, perhaps you could help people more by comparing the R1S to the Wagoneers, Land Rovers, Jeep Grand Cherokees, Toyota 4Runners, and other ICE SUVs that are supposed to work well both on-road and off-road. It would help people understand the class of vehicle in which the R1S competes on performance, price, salient features, etc. Again, thanks for the review.

    So, I'm curious about one pedal drive, if the car is essentially slowing down without the brake pedal, do the brake lights activate and warn the car behind them?

      Current EVs will activate brake lights when slowing down as measured by some threshold deceleration rate.

    I only learned about the R1S yesterday. It’s a rugged offroad EV that runs a 11 second 1/4 mile… That’s Jeep Trackhawk fast! And with the Tax incentives you’re only paying about 80k??? In my view this thing directly competes with the Toyota 4Runner.
    The 4Runner barely gets 20mpg while this thing gets the equivalent of 60mpg+ which is 3X better than the 4Runner. If enough 4Runner owners/enthusiasts get a view of this thing (which is made in the USA!) I think a lot of them will make that switch. What an amazing vehicle for the price.

    It's looking like a great E-SUV , they just need to up the range , add a spare tire, offer a 2 row version for car campers/overlanders and add sliding covers for the 2 moonroofs because it gets freakin hot in most places within the states. Oh and offer apple car play and android auto . Those features would add significant value IMHO, hope they thrive and survive 😎
