A different engine, that allows for cover, suppressive fire, more numerous units of many small squads, proper urban combat with accessible buildings with multiple levels, deploying and redeploying troops / vehicles with air transports.
And all of this as a bare minimum.

On the topic of space battles, one can look at the older Star Wars: Empire At War and see a game with real time space AND ground battles to get an idea of what is needed. It's almost comical that the format that one would want for both 40k and Star Wars has already been done. CA just needs to copy and adapt it.

I want Tryzan’s campaign to include his collection as a faction mechanic gaining unique relics by defeating certain factions or lords in battle which give you certain faction or army buffs. Some of these relics can allow him to summon non necrons units in battle.
, like summoning a square of Ultra marines or a swarm of tyranids.
His campaign victory condition should be to steal the golden throne and the Emperor by sacking Terra.

    My thoughts on this matter:
Huge problem in Warhammer40k would be scale - what scale would we get? Solar system (like in Dow)? Sector? Segmentum?
Doubt that CA would make whole galaxy as map (this is too much) - more like all events would happened in one sector and this would bring limitations on factions and characters they could bring in
    .
    For example:
1)You cant bring Tau Empire because this is very small (in terms of galactic scale) and cant travel to far from their home
2)You cant bring all famous chapters of space marines (same for all other factions) - because it would look absurd if everyone start crowd in one place. Same go with Heroes.
    .
This could be partially avoided if CA choose important very location as campaign map (for example Nachmund gauntlet and Vigilus = key point which connect two halfs of the Imperium) - it important enough for varios factions and Heroes to come there and you can play on different goals of each faction to make interesting gameplay
Downside of such decision - forget about Tau
    .
About connections between ground battles and space combat - here is my ideas:
    .
1)Each planet siege start with space battle (depending on how advanced planet is it would have it own garrison fleet, space and air defense)
    .
2)Result of space battle would be directly influence on the ground battle. Something like this:
    .
1.Numbers of ships (and their type) in your fleet limit your max number of ground troops and vehicle's you can carry on. Lost some ship during the space battle? Well, bad for you - good chunk of your troops die without making even a single shot/ This would bring element of the tactic in battle . As example - you want to bring more transport ships with you so you could have more troops on the ground. OK. But transport ships are weak - so you need think on how guard them from enemy units because for them it would be a tasty prey to hunt down
    .
    2. Results of space Battle influence ground battle in a way - how many forces you have in total and many you could send as a reserve (also give you a tactical task - you need to split forces wise because if you waste it all at once...well bad for you). Also it would provide additional options such as orbit strike or sending couple units in chosen location (teleport terminators squad in the rear or just send quick reinforcement). It would give different options depending on which faction you play.
    .
3.Air forces and anti-air defence - i think we should skip full scale air battles and instead they should serve as attrition for your ground forces during initial landing and your sending reserves - something like you landing on drop pods or close space shuttle and they blow them down (at least certain % of them). You could also call limited (because they occupied with "battle in the air" numbers of them to support your troops on the ground and they would act as fly unit in TWW)
4.Siege itself would be multistage event (depending on how advanced and heavily fortified planet is) and would continue for several terms. Important difference with TWW - siege would not freez planet activities like it was in TWW. As i said earlier - your fleet would act as a your base, while planet would still able to generate troops, vehicles, etc to the limited extend (so it would be easier to defend planet then to take it).
    .
Planets would separated on several key areas (each of them provide huge bonus and options to defender side) attacker should take. For example - space port would provide garrison fleet with opportunity to retreat and repair damaged ships (so they could use "hit and run" tactic in order to tarnish your upcoming reinforcement and fleet on the orbit. Attacker would force to conquer each one of those areas in order to dwindle planet defence capabilities. He also could act head on and attack "main target" but would suffer huge attrition as a debuff for such bold choice. Defender would need think wise on how he would split his forces and which areas he chose to defend
    .
2)Key aspect of TWW40k game should be "cloud of war" - basicly player should not know what happen on the global map and his area of vision must be tightly link with territory he have in control (so he have little time to prepare for the siege and each player had a element of surprise). Ofcourse certain factions (for example - eldar due their ability to see future) would have way better vision on campaign map and another faction would have ability to limit another players vision (tyranids). Also almost every faction would have certain buildings (like observation station) and units (psykers, astropats) in order to make your vision better and this would play a key role - prepare your planets to the siege would take time (several turns). Better you able to prepare - better stats you get in defence. So depending on how early you spot enemy forces are coming = better defence you able to prepare.

Even if 40k becomes a new flagship they should continue to develop Warhammer 3 in paralell with new DLC. Putting in all that work and encouraging all those fans to stick around for three games to see a lot of the potential realized would be wasted if they just completely move on from Warhammer 3 after their next projects take priority. It's an evergreen source of profit as long as they put sufficient thought into pricing and the quality we get for our purchase.

    my biggest doubts
    1º Space battles?
2º Map, a planet, a solar system, a sector (DLC to get the entire galaxy?)
3º Implementation of space marines, how the factions would work, if they want to do it correctly regarding the lore they should all work more or less like Nakai, with imperial guard garrisons with some marines, they just kill the enemy don't colonize it. (at least the loyalist)
4º Factions restricted to maximum 1000 space marines?
5º Are they going to do sieges at all? How would that work?
6º Mechanicus titans/very big units viable at all?

I actually enjoyed the naval battles in Napoleon and I would love to see Warhammer to get the navies of Man O' War. I have always assumed CA couldn't release their Warhammer ships becauce of Man O' War Corsair by Evil Twin Artworks got there first. However their ownership should now have expired IF CA wanted to do it. As you say probably too difficult given how many different types of ships, their weapons and their mechanics (Greenskin not submarines for example) would be a lot of work. And there is the worry that most players don't fight most of their battles, they just auto resolve, and the same thing is likely to happen with ships.

In warhammer total war you can play characters that are supposed to be dead or missing. It’s not part of the true cannon so you can do pretty much whatever with a few exceptions like playing with very very old characters or characters that GW says no. But in 40k you could use warp time shenanigans and play characters from when and wherever. My point is this game could be bigger than anything before

I'm genuinely curious as to why everyone is only noticing these issues now. I came into the series playing Warhammer 1 half a year into Warhammer 2's launch, after getting sucked into the idea of a Total Warhammer setting via the Medieval 2: Beginning of the End Times warhammer mod, and I noticed a lack of depth immediately.
The over-reliance on single entities, removing of bodyguards, watering down of the siege system, lack of garrisons, taxation or any settlement management mechanics whatsoever, along with the removal of minor settlement battles, naval battles and the terrible diplomacy (which is made even more unacceptable considering they'd been developing Three Kingdoms alongside Total Warhammer 2) system are all glaring issues that were only ever glossed over with a thin veneer of novelty via the magic system, large monstrous units and general flair and flavor of the Warhammer setting.
This is all made worse when you consider how the best DLC so far, Thrones of Decay, was apparently quite the strain on them. They finally started giving us good content and then all but admit they're not looking forward to delivering similar quality in the future. I get that they're seemingly "listening" once again for the 100th time, but delaying unfinished projects is the most basic of things to expect from a developer. If Warhammer 2 and 3 were historical titles that didn't have a massively popular IP to fall back on, the series would have ended after the first game. The only way they'll fix all of this is if they enact the following 4-step program:
Step 1 - Fire the marketing team
Step 2 - Fire the execs that prioritized short-term profits over long-term gain
Step 3 - Hire new staff that understand making a good product is how you sustain a business long-term
    Step 4 - profit
We all know they'll get stuck at Step 0, however, which involves admitting that they have a problem. Not to their customers, though, but to themselves.

I've been wondering how they'll treat unit cohesion.
It's been a long time since I played tabletop but I remember in Fantasy battle we'd move units as a formation - which suits TW's model from previous games. 40K though the individual models would spread out a lot more, taking cover as you mentioned but even in open ground the units would be generally smaller and each model often more spread out or flexible with their positioning. Not something I think they'll find difficult to do but definitely something I'd like to see catered for.
Guardsmen could get away with it to some degree and a mass of Orks swarming forward in a blob makes sense, but for other races like Eldar or Space Marines a well defined formation marching to war for some/many of their units would just look.... odd.
    Similar problem with WWI.

I mean, I can already picture the game easily in warscape. Extra Small unit sizes, 20 units in LoS blocking terrain. Certain units with assault weapons can fire while running, while others with heavy or rapid fire can only fire while stationary/walk speed.
    Vehicles have side, frontal armor.
Aircraft, battleships as call in bombardments to deter death stars.
Jump pack infantry able to zip around terrain.
Deep strike abilities, allowing terminators to teleport from space onto enemy positions at the right moment.
Slower pace than you might expect from DoW, to allow the player to react to the battlefield.
Support stuff like smokes to allow unit advances.
    Point and click cover positions.
Emplacements need to be rotated(think ratling gunners)
A lot less overall battlefield information and scouting is more important due to LoS blocking.
And so on and so on. Just wanted to share my thoughts

CA need to put atleast the same ammount of Money into 40K, as they did with Hyena if not even more, otherwise it will just not work.
    - They need a completly new engine for cover, entering buldings, how single entity units as daemons, titans and tanks will behave
    - Planetary Systems and the Warp
    - Huge Squad based battles with ALOT of Squads, Airsupport, Tanks, Titans and Spacemarines
    - interesting mechanics and world/galaxy events and not stuff like: Migration yes or no ?
    - Space battles, its 40K if there are no ships you cut out like 30% of what makes 40K what it is
    - a overhall of Diplomacy, Mercenaries and Ressourcemanagment, like Biomass and Weapons (A Mix of Chaos Dawi factories/Bretonian peasents and food from Rome 2)
    - More than 4 factions, sorry CA but you cant fill an entery galaxy with just 4 factions and then copy paste them for the whole galaxy, we need atleast 6 completly not related factions like Orks, Imperium, Eldar, Tau, Tyranids, Chaos, also i say it how it is, i will not spend 10+ Euro on a single Spacemarine Chapter or Guardsregiments
    - Cutscenes and interesting Quests and Campaign goals, like bro its 2024 this is the bare minimum of modern entertaining
and so much more....like Psykers, Warpstorms, Hordemechanics for Tyranids, Craftworlds and Semi Hordes like Spacemarines and Orks.
Cults of Chaos, Genestealers, Corrupt Governors that dont pay taxes, Intern Conflicts for the Imperium like the Inqusition against a Spacemarine-Chapter or a Lord of Terra thats accused of heresy
Damn CA either puts everything they have into this or it will flop....

I still don't think they'll add Space Battle, as it is a different license altogether (Battlefleet Gothic). And while it was the warscape engine unwieldy nature that saw Naval Battle cut across the board, the license also is the reason Warhammer Total War never got its naval battles; for being another license (Man O'War.)
They are not going to pay an extra fee for Naval/Space Combat, let's be realistic.

    @Henskelion Месяц назад

I have no idea how they're going to handle scale in TW40k, in both the tactical and strategic senses. On the tactical side, 40k battles can involve hundreds of thousands of soldiers, or millions, something beyond the scale of every preceding TW game. Maps would also need to be massive to account for this, and cities could no longer just be big castles, but enormous hive cities. They'd basically need to create a Supreme Commander-like game for it to work, at least insofar as for it to feel like 40k in terms of scale. I suspect we won't quite get that, short of them building an entirely new engine.
Then there's the strategic side. In past TW games, the world map is like a region of Earth, like Europe or Japan. TWWH has the entire Fantasy Earth, but that's still pretty small compared to 40k, which spans the entire galaxy. They could do the entire galaxy, and just limit the number of conquerable planets to a few dozen (ala the old Star Wars RTS/4X Empire At War), but that feels like it misses the point of 40k.
Maybe they could just scale everything down. In the same way that Darktide just takes place in a single Imperial Hive City on a single planet, maybe TW40k could take place in a single solar system, or maybe a few solar systems, sort of like how the Gaunt's Ghosts books take place in a cluster of star systems, and never go beyond that. That way you could have reasonably large scale, without the game's mechanics butting up against 40k's setting being too massive to even comprehend.

Like seriously, who tf are these people who skip every naval battle and spend half their time playing multiplayer? They don't seem to be anywhere on the Internet, are they just hiding?

  • @lazytopaz
    @lazytopaz Месяц назад

Only four? If they are to make it properly there's loads more to change. Example : your artillery emplacement shoots, shell lands, units splatter/gore/gibs and everything. What's missing? well shell landed in the middle of the forest, it should deform the terrain (new cover/can hunker down in the crater), destroy trees (aka partial forest cover removed), forest catches fire (slowly removes forest, non-elite units inside get dmg). This is just one scenario. Out of hundreds. IMHO - new engine is mandatory, software that will enable rendering tens of thousands of units, terrain deformation, dynamic lightning, complex environments, proper AI and unit interactions, and those are just from top of my head. CA wants to make 40k they need A LOT of THINGS thought through and done with modern tech capabilities. If it's just a reskin of Total War 3, it ain't gonna slide.

  • @ForrestFox

    My own take on TW:WH40K:
    1. Needs new engine (It must be able to handle LOTS of units, and space battles, and naval battles in case of future WW2 game etc).
    2. Way more units on the battlefield. Yeah, I know that there can surely be skirmish battles in WH40k where 20 units face 20 units, but imho why not have a hundred units facing a hundred units, where the player gets to use his 20 units and the AI takes control of the rest (Unless you are a savant and want to controll all hundred units).
    3. Whole army being able to go skirmish mode. Let a unit of space marines go in formation, for sure, but they'll most of the time run around in skirmish, going from cover to cover. Lets units seek shelter inside ruins and take advantage cover of terrain/buildings.
    4. Destructible buildings. We need this, and we need units to be able to enter intact buildings and ruins to get cover and secure points.
    5. Thematic warfare going on outside the map. Lets use all that "AI" knowledge we have today to make scenic battle going on outside the actual map. Let the player take a quick break from whatever he is doing and just immerse himself with the ongoing battle between AI units. Depending on how the actual fight is going for the player, the scenic battles could sway and show how its going.
    6. Diplomacy. Some races wont have diplomacy with others, and even most of those that do have diplomacy with each others should have as much negative effect as positive effect. (Imperial Guards making short alliance with Tau in a system to fight a common foe? Then the Ecclesiarchy is gona have a field day on those imperials and punish them in all sorts of ways.)
    7. Easier way to sync the mods that two or more players want to use in COOP. I hate spending 10 min going through what mods we're gona manually turn on and off before playing a coop game. Let host decide the mods, that way you can still have your "personal" mods running for your singleplayer game, but as soon as you go back to a saved coop or start up a new coop it will temporary switch to whatever the host wants to use.

I mean, I highly doubt diplomacy is going to play next to any part in 40k. between factions that nominally at least serve the same empire, it makes sense, but it also makes sense for diplomacy to be incredibly between different species and getting something like the eldar to help out against a black crusade should feel like a feat of diplomacy, rather than the inevitable formation of the ordertide as it did in TW:WH2. By contrast diplomacy within the same species should feel incredibly commonplace. Things like trade deals with xenos or chaos should be possible, but an extremely bad idea (if discovered, hoarding xenotech and not getting caught should be an entire playstyle for some mechanicus faction).

I can take or leave aerial combat unless it's aerial units during land battles. But I'm still of the mind that this first game will just focus on one planet - one solar system at most. Diplomacy, at least for the first game, is very low on the priority list until they have more factions that can engage in it among each other. You wouldn't see Imperium make diplomatic missions with Orcs or Chaos, for example. But they could with Imperial Guard, Inquisition, or maybe Elves. We don't know the starter factions, but I don't expect it to be many. The absolute biggest thing they have to stick is cover and line of sight. At the absolute barest of minimum.

Nurgle can turn regions into toxic swamps that are covered with a thick fog that not only is so dense that you can't see the enemies in it, but is also so toxic/corrosive that you can only hope to cross it in vehicles or fully closed power armor, because even re-breather get destroyed. Even power armor and vehicles have problems with it.

Battles have to be just under apocalyps sice but in the range of up to 10k points to be in the usual scale for TW to make sense. So there needs to be a good battle AI that works on it's own when you don't order it around all the time. I can maybe see them doing that with Space Marines, but Guard? There would be models dieing all the time. All this in Urban enviroment, they have to get good movement for units that don't mover in formation, to be fair they also don't move in formation in WH3, but that is a problem. One way I could see this work is a summening system, like ordering around reinforcements in the MP battles that WH3 has right now. Very sceptical.

Combat and squad mechanics worry me most. Large scale warfare but operating at squad level.
You can't have an entire company or platoon plus of weapons teams, like Warplock Jezzails or Ratling Guns in TWWH. When i was in the military, this is called being fucking dumb. Weapons team don't move as a company, they're attached to and operate at squad level so they can better support troops and don't get entirely wiped out by arty/air strikes.
Similarly organic weapons like Flamers, Plasma, Missile Launcher etc should be part of squad customization. They're attached to or are part of a fire team or rifle platoon. They should also have a purpose like suppression, anti-armor kinda like the contact effects in TWWH but much bigger impact.
    Lords & heroes should/can have a retinue.
Auxiliary roles like the Bannerman, Sergeant, Apothecary, Combat Medic, Chaplains, Exarch, Nob etc possibly as a leadership/support customization option for platoons and not a single entity.
Then you have kits like grenades, melta bombs, deployable energy shields etc, again as equipment option for squads or platoons as an active skill.
Also there's other things to consider like Terminator & Warp Spider teleportation.
A TW WH40K is NOT a simple and direct translation based on TWWH3.

I really don’t like the idea of adding space battles 40K. I would much rather they focus on making the regular land combat the best it can be rather than make half assed space combat system.
Even when not taking development resources into account I think it’s a bad idea. A lot of people will say space is so ubiquitous that there has to be there, but that’s exactly why I don’t want it there. The game will basically become shitty space combat game with how often it will happen. It would make land battles even more rare depending on how they implement the campaign map.
Another problem arises due to the ubiquity of space. Your armies will constantly be traveling through space to get to each other new system and will need to have some form of navy guarding it. If we assume that it’s like previous total war navies your embarked armies would be virtually worthless as they’d get destroyed by a small naval force. You’d be required to probably have a navy for each army which would be a drag on your economy. Alternatively you could have each unit have a ship type assigned to it. Though this then takes away from your ability to choose your own navy.
This wasn’t an issue for previous total wars because you didn’t have to embark to get to every region like you would in a 40K game. You could pick and choose when you would and could usually get away with a smaller number of navies. You could heavily invest in your navy and be a sea power or you could focus on being a land power. The point is you had a choice. In a 40K game you really wouldn’t. Having a good navy would be a mandatory and you’d spend too much time playing that instead of the land battles we want from a 40K game.

It sucks to watch the frontlines where 1/2 of each unit is engaged and the other 1/2 behind them are waiting their turn to move up. Or even if you're charging a unit from the side, sometimes it makes a weird square shape instead of totally wrapping around the other unit. I would also love to see ranged units be able to fire less accurately while charging forward and only not fire when running away. Sucks whenever I reposition just slightly and they take 3-4 to move 2 feet then reset their firing stance.
