Big ups to you Aubrey! It’s an achievement to finish any marathon, even if you walked some. Strength training is indeed important but putting in enough mileage is also crucial.
Great work Aubrey!!! This is a good addition to your content.. I workout too before turning into a runner. And my old gym self crept up when I saw the first exercise being the Bulgarian Squats... my thighs are crying just watching it. Love the new content man!!
Started those on. Post weight, progressed to 5kgs for 10 reps and yesterday was at 10Kgs for 6 reps and next week will take it to 10Kgs for 10 reps. They are harsh.
100% with you. I'm in a rehab situation and it is not fun! I just want to go out and run, but I know I have to put in the S&C time to support the running. I'm hoping next year during the autumn marathon races, I can cruise through them without the suffering! ❤🔥
I am going to do much more gym stuff this coming year. I have also asked for some support from others and will be sharing that. I won’t miss a beat when it comes to the gym.
Cheers Aubrey, great vid - excellent points. Feel things went wrong for me when I was getting lazy with strength session and knee pain is easing up now I'm building strength back up. Need to get those calf raises and single leg work back in. Thanks again, looking forward to your next marathon training block!
This is so helpful! I’m running London next year - my first marathon ever. I’ve done two halves this year, having recently done Gosport. Both times my lower back has been SO achey and I know it’s because I need to do strength and conditioning 😅 I just find it so overwhelming thinking about where to start 😅
This is what i needed.. being a lonely runner, i need some guidance on leg day from someone i can relate to,not another sub 3's.. doing my 2nd HM in 2 months.. thanks bro.. big fan from Malaysia!
Thank you so much, do your best to find a plan and stick with it and maintain consistency through it because a lot of us start but not everyone finishes
Interesting. I’ve always heard it said that strength work lets you run more in training with lower injury risk and faster recoveries - and it’s that higher mileage and/or intensity that actually helps you improve your running. But either way, looking forward to seeing what challenge you take on next! 🏃♂️
Injury is the main obstacle for me and I want to keep training healthily. Additionally strength training is for life generally outside of running too. As we get older, it vocomes more appreciated
I coach a run group and we do strength together usually once a week! I know that they are likely to skip it if it’s just at home. Strength training reduces their injury risk so much! Excuse me while I go do some deadlifts 💪🏼💪🏼
Yeah buddy! This offseason lifting is fun, challenging, and most of all, DEF needed! I felt the same pangs during my marathon around mile 18, so I'm also back under the barbell. I love it though- putting on size is fun (esp. when ppl compliment your gainzzz during a race!) HAHA.
My legs balloted for strike action around mile 21 at Berlin this year, and the last 5 miles definitely put a dampener on the weekend. But if honest, I was lucky to be there (both in terms of the ballot and having a year leading up to it working on injury recovery), so definitely wasn’t going to miss it. Certainly more optimism for the year ahead, and forcing myself to find time for strength training again to stave off the leg cramps. How about Manchester in the spring? Just along the road, no major travel required…🤔 Keep it up 👍
Definitely a good one to try but I hate the fact that it’s now a choice between Manchester or London but then again a good way of making sure you land one at least. Yeah I’m certainly looking at that one
This is great, thank you! What do you think about lifting heavy for your legs with low reps for muscle strength since running already works muscle endurance? Basically building bone strength in the process.
Nice video, Aubrey! I do 5 sets of 11 squats x2 practically every day. Then, on leg specific days, i throw in a few more leg exercises. Im pretty sure my hips are weak, and i think i need to implement the hip thrusting machine to improve myself in that area. Cheers for the video.
Hi Aubrey! Great video! Which exercise would u say is better for long distance marathon training for strength? Deadlifts or squats ? Or which if u have choose 1 for running ?
I'm on the other side where I am strength training for a year before gotten into running. So now, my legs are very strong but my speed and stamina is very weak. 😅
I literally just finished my leg day. I had to drop out of my half marathon because of a hip injury. The PT said I wasn’t working hard enough on my left leg strength. So I went back to barbell based leg day workouts.
That’s it! Definitely trust their plan and advice! There is nothing better than just a generally stronger body regardless of running and any performance goals.
Well done on finishing Aubrey! How are your legs feeling now? If you want to pay me for some proper coaching i can happily tell you where you went wrong 🤩
I’m all good now, I was back to running not so longer after. Also… really good to see you in my comments sir! 2025 will be an amazing year for sure because 2024 was merely an introduction to the marathon distance
Re; that title: Let's not disparage walking in marathons, and paint it as a sign of defeat. Run/walk is a legitimate strategy. I ran two marathons close together this year. The first one was 4:11 (a massive PR for me, previously 4:16). I've always straight ran all my races. Just FIVE weeks later, I did a less important marathon. I decided to give run/walk a try since it was a whatever marathon and I could afford to experiment. I ran intervals of 2 minutes of running and 30 seconds of walking. My time was 3:52 ... WHAT? Even though I pulled over to the side, the worst thing about this otherwise great strategy is the dirty and disappointed looks you get from people when you're on your walk portions. That's why we shouldn't paint walking with a giant brush as a sign of failure.
I fully agree with you. 100%. I think it’s all about the goal. If that is your plan and also a way of getting through it, I’m all for it and please k ow that I am the biggest supporter of walking or even just running for fun. For me though, this was not that. This was my legs simply falling apart and me struggling and I do not want to be in that situation again. I want to WALK because I want to WALK. Not because my legs are falling apart, I hope that makes sense,

Nice video Aubrey., strength training is very important. I'll be honest with you, this is the first video of yours I watch fully for a long time. In fairness I skip through most nowadays, too many (sad and dangerous )things happening in the world right now to allow myself to become absorbed by luxuries such as how to improve my running. But today I needed to take my mind of things a bit. One thing I'd like to see, is for you to also put some attention to the 5K and 10K. I know marathons are all the rage nowadays (my next marathon, blah blah blah), but seriously, marathons have no other allure over the shorter distances other than bragging about them. Do some videos about how you're going to prepare to lower your 5 and 10K PB's for example. These I'd watch in full again:) When someone tells me they can run a 20min or less 5K or a 40m 10K, I am way more impressed than when they tell me they run a 3h30 marathon, but that's just me.
Honestly, thank you for this comment and also for watching the video as you say. I will definitely share my plans for 2025 soon as I try to spread across my running. The goal however will remain getting better at the marathon distance and seeing as many countries as I can in the process
@@AubreyRunning The seeing many countries part I understand, if it takes a marathon to do it, so be it:) Honestly, I meant my comment as a suggestion for you to get more people on board. Everybody out there talking about marathons, very few creating content on the "lowly" 5K/10K. Nick Bester comes to mind and by coincidence(?) he is the fastest YT marathoner of the ones I know.
Perfect timing! I was about to skip leg day for no good reason, but you got me motivated to head to the gym and get it done. Have a good day!
I have skipped a few in my time 😂😂😂

Yeah it’s more effective on single legs for sure but takes so much more time. As a full time worker and dad and fiancé I’m always on borrowed time 😂😂😂

I disagree, running high milage is way more effective. Strength training takes away from running. To be a better runner, run more.
That’s the worst advice one can give.
I promise you that there evidence that your stance may not be correct
