- We asked six West-Coasters to try some of Indiana’s most notable foods and, if you’re from the Hoosier State, you’ve got to see their hilarious reactions. Sorry Californians - not all pickles are sour and, nope, that’s not chicken in your sandwich.
But, hey, who can complain when they get a slice of sugar cream pie?

Just for the record, I live in Indiana and haven't even heard of those pickles or the fried corn meal.
Born and raised in indiana and i have never heard of corn meal mash and orange candied pickles. I never had a sugar cream pie and never knew it was "indiana" food. The only think that made sense is the tenderloin!

I've lived in Indiana my whole life, and the only one of these I've encountered is the pork tenderloin sandwich. That being said, that is not what an Indiana pork tenderloin sandwich looks like.
Agreed, true pork tenderloins here are about a foot wide. Never heard of any of the others on the list.

Born and raised in Indy, and never SAW a dang candied pickle 'til this video. DO agree with the tenderloin sandwich and sugar cream pie tho'....those are DEF an Indiana thing. Only thing, the tenderloin wasn't the right size. A TRUE Indiana tenderloin DWARFS the bun ... I mean it hangs WAY over the edges.
Loved this video! Being a Hoosier, I definitely have to say that a typical pork tenderloin is easily the size of your face! Haha
I have lived in Indiana my whole life and I have never heard of those pickles.
I've lived in Indiana my entire life and the only dish I have heard of was the pork tenderloin. That didn't even look like a pork tenderloin. That looked like a charred mess. Where are the biscuits n' gravy, country fried steak, and corn on the cob? You could have at least thrown in some sun brewed tea, maybe some pulled pork, a pizza burger, home battered onion rings.
The breaded loins were WAY over done! They're supposed to be a golden brown!
Anyone who hasnt tried sugar cream pie... DO IT. HEAVEN ON A PLATE.
As a hoosier, I'm not sure I totally agree with these choices. While we do eat fried mush, it's somewhat rare, and we consider it a southern food. Also, I've never heard of orange pickles specifically, but I agree that pickles don't have to be dill, there are many other kinds. Once again, not really popular unless you can your own vegetables. The pork burger and sugar cream pie are definitely common though.
not sure if being from northern Indiana with amish influences my opinion though.
Nikki Johnston Cracker Barrel and Bob Evans and small town "country" restaurants often have fried mush as a side on the breakfast menu and you can get it at Walmarts, but still considered a southern dish like grits. sugar cream pie I feel might be more of a country/Amish specialty. I see pork burgers all over the place here too, they are often used as school concessions / fundraisers, and county fairs.
My mother told me the candied pickles are from Northeast Indiana around Auburn. But I know farmers that make their own spicy pickles or various bread & butter / candied pickles.
TheCsel I mean, I know people like some sweet pickles around here, but I've never seen anything like that, and I live in Fort Wayne.

Should have switched the pickles for green bean casserole. I don't know anybody that does not have a family recipe for green bean casserole.

These pickles come from Sechler's Pickles located in a town called St. Joe. These are not the only varieties they sell, so i'm surprised they'd pick such an odd and acquired tasting pickle. The pork tenderloin is not nearly large enough and sugar cream pie was more Amish, but still heavenly!
Never heard of the pickle before, and I've lived here all of my 59 years. And pork tenderloin sandwiches are ALWAYS bigger than the bun, but I guess that must be a southern Indiana thing. The sugar cream pie looked truly pathetic, too. The ones we always fixed came out firm, not spreading all over the plate.

You needed a 7 layer salad and cream cheese peaches. Born and raised in Indiana and you couldn't go to any dinner party where those two dishes weren't served. I live in LA now, and I secretly bring them to dinner parties just to see how weird people eat it! It's very entertaining. My husband won't touch it, but I love it.
Oh YEAH! I and freaking chicken gizzards and hearts! You can't really find a gas station that doesn't serve them. GA-ROSS.

I'm an architect in the west Chicago burbs but grew u in Kokomo and lived in nw Indiana after college. We had a client in LaPorte whose primary residence was LA. It came up in conversation that his wife loved chicken gizzards and we told them about Ernie's in Knox, which became a must go to destination after that, she was in heaven. Nobody in LA, and very few places in Indiana, prepare those. Sadly Walgreen's bought out the place and it is no more.
There is a gas station. Between michigan city and laporte that makes them. Heck a few restaurants in the area makes them. Too bad rodinis closed down in michigan city because they came with the meal. I'm in laporte btw.
And there is the line that captures every single one of these kids "As I'm eating America right now I'm starting to realize I've not lived as a person." Well, acknowledging it is the first step.
Hoosier lifer here...Sugar cream pie. So much yes. Tenderloin should have been roughly the size of a Frisbee and then you'd be close to what they're actually like here. Never heard of those pickles, and my grandma is the only person I've met that ate cornmeal hash and that was about 80 years ago.
I can't believe all the people that have never heard of sugar cream pie! It is the state pie of Indiana. Although I will say that I have never heard of those pickles or the mush. Big Red should have been on there. Haha

Being from Illinois, we had similar foods (Hated cornmeal mush, orange pickles. and pork tenderloin sandwiches as a kid.).

Ok guys. These are 4 common foods from all over Indiana. Indiana is like everywhere else and in different parts of the state some things are more common than others. I have lived here my whole life and have seen all except the pickles. And where I'm from the tenderloins are typically twice the size of the bun and toppings are optional. I usually just eat it with ketchup. No need to berate each other. Just because you've lived here in Indiana and haven't heard of these doesn't mean it's not common here. Just sayin'.
I'm a hoosier and have had all of those except for the pickles. you do put syrup on the mush, and the tenderloin didn't look like a typical indiana tenderloin
I've lived in Indiana since I was born and the pork tenderloin sandwich is the only thing that I would consider an "Indiana food."
Born and raised in various parts of Indiana, from down home in the "holler" to the streets of Indy, and the only one of these I've had is cornmeal mush. And that's supposed to be smothered in butter and maple syrup (real, mind you, not the supermarket, high fructose crap), so they even did that wrong....

Lived here all my life and I've had a tenderloin or several dozen. I've never encountered anything else from this video.
Born and raised here in Indiana, only heard of a few things lol. Love the orange pickles :P but the others I don't know.
Been in Indiana my whole life. Pork tenderloin is VERY common. If you don't like it, don't even bother going to the state fair. The corn mush and sugar cream pie is popular too. More for out in the country areas and ma and pa restaurants. The pickles though are not so common. My family comes from Kentucky so we have the more "southern" food when we cook and why I recognize those three the most.

I'm from Indiana, and fried mush wasn't anything I'd ever even heard of until I went to Tennessee .... they have it there a lot, I never had it at all growing up, and it definitely is not a staple anywhere here in restaurants or in homes of all those I know. Those pickles, ONLY the brand am I familiar with, churches and other fundraising groups sell them once or twice a year ... I've never bought that brand or eaten them, and have not heard of that variety before (orange) ... so weird. The sugar cream pie, definitely an Indiana thing, but I was raised on what was always called "old fashioned cream pie" that my mom made from a recipe her grandmother had and was handed down. It's WAY better than sugar cream. People in Indiana are nuts for sugar cream pie tho ... lol .. another oddity, but okay. Pork Tenderloin sandwiches ... looks like you had actually a great one that was hand pounded out and fixed properly. There are SO many places that claim "the best Indiana tenderloin" ... psshhh ... very few are "the best" trust me, I think I've spent years searching for "the best one" which is what you do if you're from Indiana and enjoy tenderloins ... you always are seeking "the one" that just rocks your socks off! A lot of places serve pork tenderloins that are more like pork fritters, they are super thin, have little to no taste to them and are the size of your head. Stay away from those ... they are NOT true tenderloins worth trying. Go for the ones that are handmade, pounded out to about a half inch thick, and hand seasoned and breaded! Those are the good ones! Or you could opt for the grilled variety which are just as good, minus the breading.
Pizza King pizza should have been in that little taste test ... it's totally an Indiana thing! :)
From northwest Indiana and the only food I've ever heard of is the tenderloin, Indiana food is basically Chicago food with the exception of the peanut butter burger

The cornmeal mash isn't an Indiana thing... It's a southern thing that I've seen in Kentucky.

The pie, I think that's more of a northern thing with the Amish influence, don't see it much in southern Indiana. It is good though.
Born and raised in Indiana. Never once have I ever had cornmeal mush or those weird pickles or sugar cream pie. The only one that made any sort of sense at all was the pork tenderloin...though they're really much much larger pieces of tenderloin than that. They're obscenely large.

I have lived in Indiana my whole life ... only had hoosier pie (sugar cream pie) and a tenderloin.
I'm a Hoosier, and I've never even heard of the corn mush stuff. The only food in the list common in Indiana was the tenderloin. A true Indiana food taste test would have to include corn on the cob. Fried morel mushrooms would've also been a good choice.

That's not how Indiana does tenderloins, but everything else is definitely something the old ladies at church have fed me at church dinners.

As many other commenters that are also born and raised in Indiana, I will agree that I've never heard of those pickles before. And that pork tenderloin was the wrong kind. The loin should be at least the size of a dinner plate. But hit the nail on the head with the sugar cream pie.
Not sure about half of these items. I live in Indiana. A GOOD pork tenderloin sandwich is suppose to be lightly brown and moist. The Sugar cream pie is just ok. You can get that all over the state.

Ok everyone that lives in NW Indiana we eat southern food like in Alabama and Texas so we r totally different than the rest of Indiana yes NW Indiana might not be the only place in Indiana that eats southern food but thats what we mostly eat

I've lived in Indiana my whole life(albeit the very northern part called Michiana) and never heard of any of these except pork tenderloin. I thought pork tenderloin was everywhere? And the one in the video looked completely unrecognisable! XD This all looked like it could be southern food. Also, I don't mean to sound rude but those people got on my nerves by acting so ignorant, but at the same time it was kind of funny.
I agree with every other Hoosier saying these choices just aren't Indiana. Sugar Crème Pie was good though, we have the factory that made them a few miles from where I live! Here's what you should have tried, Instead of "Fried Corn Mush" Try just regular Jiffy Corn Bread. Try Pizza King (best if you order Baked Ham & BBQ), and last but not least PETES PRIDE TENDORLOINS. You're Welcome. :)
I've been in Indiana my whole life. I've never seen 3 of the items on that list and as for the tenderloin, that is NOT what the sandwich looks like and I doubt its considered an Indiana food.
love pork burgers. but being from southern indiana we eat a ton of fried foods. like fried oreas is delish so are fried twinkies. but also HAVE YOU EVER ATE BRAIN SANDWICHES??? your life will never be the same.

Lived in southern Indiana my whole life and the only thing I've seen was the pork tenderloin and as others have said it was waaaay to small. If it doesn't fill a whole plate it's to small.
I have lived in Indiana most of my life. Never heard of those pickles, thought the fried mush was a Kentucky thing and the tenderloin must be breaded and must have atleast two inches hanging outside the bun.

I AGREE with TheCsel. I'm a Hoosier. Born, Raised and still here. I've never had the Corn Mush, and never even heard of Orange pickles. I don't think Sugar Creme Pie is an Indiana Exclusive favorite...... Who in the world picked these items? About the only accurate thing on this list is the Tenderloin. I think someone was confusing us with Kentucky or Tennessee.

Um, I am pretty sure after 40 years I would have heard of or tried some of these things. The breaded pork tenderloin is quite awesome. If you go to the right place it will feed a family of four. As for the other things like fried mush, sugar cream pie and those nasty sounding pickles. I just don't know. The sugar cream pie sounds good, but it must be something outside of Indianapolis. Because I have never had it nor the pickles. As for mush I am sure a hoosier could fry up something like that. I could fry you up a damn good waffle whenever you want.

I really want to know where their sources are for this because this more represents the ignorance the west coast people than it does actually representing Indiana foods. I would guess maybe these are possibly popular in the south? I've lived in Indiana my whole life and like many others in this thread, the pork tenderloin is the only one I've ever even eaten. The pork tenderloin is also not big enough at all.

I have lived in Indiana my whole life. The tenderloin and pie are served at like the county fairs but the pickles NOO!! You should have chosen a much better flavor. The corn mush never even heard of it!! I do like that LA people are trying different state foods and the video was nice but this is a poor representation of Indiana
