Isn't it so interesting to go through these Illinois towns? Farmland, plenty of four way stops, and one place to stop in town for snacks. These small towns were the backbone of the US.
Thanks for the Rt 66 ride-along. I've driven sections of it many times over years and did the whole thing in 2002, it's truly one of the great road trips. Looking forward to more of your adventures on The Mother Road!
In 1957 my Dad and Mom along with my 3 month old brother and myself traveled in a 1953 Plymouth from St. Louis Missouri to Southern California. I still have several memories of the trip even though I was only 5 years old at the time. I remember staying in the Howard Johnsons, the endless expanse of farmland, stopping at roadside drive inns to eat, having picnics along the way and seeing the Capitol Building in Denver Colorado. My mom bought me a metal fire truck and other toys to keep me occupied during the long road trip. I remember how hot it got the further west we went (No AC in those days) and I remember stopping in a Cafe in I believe Utah where the waitress gave me free ice-cream. We also stopped in a small store/gas station in Nevada and the bathroom was an outhouse. My mom went over to use the facilities and a great big dog came jumping out of the outhouse and chased her back to the car. She was terrified but it turned out the dog was friendly and would get in the outhouse to get out of the sun. Quite the trip along with some of my earliest memories.
I’d love to meet you and swap experiences sounds just like my youth family and experiences, was so fortunate to have great parents and wonderful experiences it was a real adventure back in the day
@@davegiannotti758 You know I am going on 71 years old and I have had a remarkable life. When I tell people of my experiences many of them think I am outright lying. I never let life slip by without seeing and doing new things whenever I could. I am fortunate in that I don't have many regrets in life and have many great memories. It is probably the same with you.
Brings back great memories of travelling the Route in the 50’s & 60”s as a kid had wonderful summer vacations travelling to various western states as i grew up in Illinois. The Diners & Cafe’s were the best always a glass of ice water and home cooked meals. A Kinder gentler time in our history. Thanks for doing this you do a great job of bringing Rural USA back to life.
We made 3 round trips down route 66 in the early 1960's when my parents had a home in Chicago and one in California. What a treat to see it again. My Aunt and Uncle are buried in Gardner IL as well. What a treat this video is. We first made the trip in a 1957 Pontiac Catalina (built on the same chassis as the famous Chevy BelAire). The last trip was in a 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 XL convertible. Those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end...
Hi Russ, Grew up traveling Route 66. Dad and Mom moved to San Diego in 1955. Every other year we traveled that road to get to Ohio. What WONDERFUL Memories.
Yayyy!! Excited to see this. In July, we drove Chicago to Edmond, OK on Route 66. Pontiac, ILL was one of our favorites. Tulsa has many RTE 66 stops so plan for that.
I drove over the road foe 5 years and frequently traveled Interstate 40 through Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. That pretty much was the old Route 66. Through Arizona I would pick up slate in Seligman and the street through town was part of Route 66. Lots of History along the way. Used to pick up in Tulsa quite a bit. Got stopped on Hwy 40 several times to wait for the tornados to clear. All the truckers would be having a grand old time at the TruckStop until the lightening and thunder started and the power would go out. Then, for some reason it would get real quiet. All us brave truckers HA HA!!!
Could you imagine all the traffic off the interstate traveling on that 2 lane rd. today, all the way to the west coast😂. What a nightmare that would be🥴. Enjoyed as always Mr. Russ👍✌
I’m so glad you were excited about seeing the older alignments of Route 66; they are special and unique. Illinois has created many special moments in their preservation and presentation of the Mother Road. In central Oklahoma, my husband and I live along an original alignment called “Old Highway 66.” See you soon!
thank you for this series. my dad would drive from CA to Virginia every other summer from the early 60's until 1975 and he'd go out of his way to drive the 66. wonderful memories.
Hi Russ I have been looking forward to this Route 66 journey back to AZ‼️ I don’t blame you I wouldn’t have driven into Chicago in the van either ‼️ Loved the museum ‼️ Take care and have a safe journey as you get your kicks on Route 66 😂
Yeah russ going home I'm tired 🤣 thank you so much for this wonderius and spectacular trip you took us on, loved those aerial videos the best way to see some of those towns, beautiful 😊❤ thanks again
Russ I'm not sure if you noticed th license plate on the VW van in that museum that said RVN-492 its not a Mercedes like yours but the way things were. HISTORY Thanks for taking me on you travels.
I was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV & we had to water the grass that Dad planted. But when I got to TX in 1969, I was shocked to see that they have to mow the side of all major roads. And I thought the FM signs I was seeing were radio stations! Farm to Market roads is what they are.
Well between you and traveling Robert I think I have seen every inch of the USA.Not bad for a lad from the UK who as only visited the us once in 1990.lol👍
At 1.13.5 the photo of Rock Cafe is worth a stop for a cup of coffee and pie for sure. Back in 2008 we stopped there in our Model T Touring and talked with the owner. She has a wonderful story. I think a year later it burned inside. Being made of Rocks I think it helped to rebuild. I hope you get to film the inside so we can see it again. Your driving the same roads so far we took. Thanks for the memories. 1:13:45 (edited to fix time stamp)
Thank you so much for showing the Route 66 and the museums, those buildings are beautiful. Love your video's they are really interesting. Safe traveling. 🙂
My wife and I just visited Pontiac, IL a few weeks ago. We walked the streets photographing all the Rt. 66 murals. We actually spent the night at the Pontiac Visitors Center which is actually a Harvest Host location…other than some road noise we had a nice nights sleep.
Russ the weather in Dewhite il. In the winter is and can be about 10 below zero with a lot of blowing snow. I live 50 miles south of there and spend 6 months in Casa Granda Az in the winter
Hubby and I did the whole route 66 in our 2012 Mitsubishi iMiev electric car. We are the only car of that kind to do the whole route. Back then there were not as many quick chargers . Took 48 days out as we did site see along the way. Only 22 days on way back.

RUSS ................... HAVE YOU EVER STOPPED AT HARLEY'S SECOND HAND STORE IN OKLAHOMA ??? ..... IF NOT, U SHOULD ON THIS TRIP .......... I CAN FIND MORE INFO FOR YOU .... HE IS QUITE THE CHARACTER ..... TOOOOOOO FUNNY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!
I have a complaint: When you were in the museum and went upstairs you went to a room where you said, "this must be that artist guy" but you did not give his name. Why not? Wasn't his name somewhere in that room? You leave us hanging sometimes. We cannot see (up close) what you are looking at. Focus, focus man. 😮 I do enjoy the trips though.
You turned off at the wrong spot.. there was a little parking lot they wanted you to park in. Little white shed or pavilion was sitting right in front at 39:02. You were to park there and walk down original old 66 as we call it
66 was 4 lanes thru most of the area I’m from. Between Pontiac and Chenoa is a lot of original old 66 . It’s rough and the bridges have mostly fell apart. And due to our broke and corrupt state. They closed a lot of sections . But 30 yrs ago I used to drive on the old closed side to work
I am so upset...could jave taken us 34 straight across indiana and filmed for me!?😢😢😢please go back maybe next year!? I watch ALL of your videos...cant get up there anymore. Would love to see it from your perspective!! Please!! From indiana beach to hundreds of small towns and not many if any big towns...please check it out!😊

“Trust your car to the man that wears the Star! “Anybody remember that? Great to see there are still safe and sane towns in America 😊
Isn't it so interesting to go through these Illinois towns? Farmland, plenty of four way stops, and one place to stop in town for snacks. These small towns were the backbone of the US.
Really, REALLY love all of your content! I’ve always love exploring back roads and small towns when time permits.
More to come!
Drove the 66 all the way from Chicago to LA in a Dodge Charger back in 2011. Loved it. Thanks! Trond, Norway 🇺🇸🇳🇴
This will be fun looking for all the attraction! Thanks Russ!

Fun stories of your early adventures along the “blue highways”.
Wonderful story. Thanks for sharing!
Memories do fade. Route 66 never went through Utah or Colorado. From LA it went through AZ, then NM, TX, OK. Maybe you are remembering other trips.
I like just video of the road. Puts me to sleep for my afternoon nap

Cool Russ. Route 66 is such an iconic piece of American history.
I hope you stop at one of those "teepee" motels on Route 66. We stayed in one in 1961.
I don’t blame you for being excited about getting home. There’s NO place like home.
Really enjoying this trip down historic Route 66!
Thought back to my mother’s white Triumph Spitfire..Back then, I’d have courage to travel route66 ! Thank you!
That courthouse in Pontiac was something to behold.
Loved you tour in Ohio, a lovely place to visit. Route 66, we did it over 20 years ago, as much of the old road as we could, fantastic memories 🇬🇧🇬🇧

That train that zoomed by you in Pontiac was an Amtrak that runs from Chicago to St Louis. Love your videos!
I was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV & we had to water the grass that Dad planted. But when I got to TX in 1969, I was shocked to see that they have to mow the side of all major roads. And I thought the FM signs I was seeing were radio stations! Farm to Market roads is what they are.

I Wish You'd Gone Through ROCKFORD, ILL...my whole family's ancestors are from there and burried there.
Following the old road is kind of like a scavenger hunt, always looking for the signs. We have done part of Oklahoma to mid Missouri.
Arizona bound.. ❤
I live a mile from the gas station in Dwight. It's a quaint little town.
Thank you so much for showing the Route 66 and the museums, those buildings are beautiful. Love your video's they are really interesting. Safe traveling. 🙂
Pontiac, Illinois has done a stellar job of preserving their historic structures and making a beautiful stop for tourists👍!

Small town America….., no trash or graffiti!
We used to go camping every weekend at the Wilmington Recreation Club. Good times.
NO NOISE in Illinois! The "s" is silent.

BTW, my late Auntie who is buried at Braceville, said the house of ill repute was in Godly. She always laughed when she spoke of it. RIP Auntie.
While you were out there, did you miss all the roundabouts?
There are sometimes 3 different eras of road! Lots of doubling back and off.
In Illinois especially...
I don’t blame you for not driving in to Chicago. It wouldn’t have been a good experience.
Go to Lexington and Towanda and Bloomington. The S is silent in Illinois.
Hey Russ, keep your eye out for a couple of guys named Tod and Buzz in a convertible Corvette 🙂
Route 66, as American as apple pie❤

Did you see Andy Griffith sitting at that desk in the jail in Gardner?!
the old parts of the road Needs to be truned into a cycling greenway. Let it make some money for the locals.
