Very good review, I agree that they are wasting a bit of the potential of these Ryzen APUs by not having better thermal dissipation at the cost of thickness. People basically never bought thinkpads cause they were slim.
The intel version apparently has two heatpipes, this amd just ones, adding more smell to “intentionally slower than the Intel SKU” - ironically the e485 I said to be faster! :-/
Thankyou for your professionalism. For a good Linux machine that is new is this a good pick? My current TP is 6 years old which the display is really really pathetic. Thanks in advance. So is this a good replacement for a T430s? My display is atrocious.
as you already have been using TPs you will probably be satisfied with these, too. Which model exactly usually depends on personal preferences and requirements such as CPU & GPU performance, battery life, lightness From other vendor's some Dell XPS are also ok, or have a great display, if you avoid the models where I found the page-up/down easy to constantly press accidentally. ruclips.net/video/TlXNGVVeFJY/видео.html
Sorry but your talk about 1080p being not enough is a bit... weird? So you complain that it looks bad at 150% scaling. yeah because you're not supposed to scale interface at all and you should keep it at 100% for best results. That's why if you want sharper text you'd need a lower native resolution like 786p or 900p and it would look sharper.
I don't understand. The image is the best when you don't scale it in windows and leave it at 100%. Native is always sharper. But the problem is that 1080p is a very high resolution for 14inch already, so text is probably too small and you have to scale. As I said, scaling is very, very bad, it makes text blurry and images scaled get blurry too. Of course too much resolution shouldn't be bad but for some weird reason windows refuses to allow us to choose from different sized interfaces for high dpi displays and we end up with text being scaled horribly. There are monitors out there that have 1080p resolution at 27inch screen size so I can't really get how that's not enough at 14inch.
Hello. I wonder what would be your opinion between this notebook and a thinkpad E14 with an i5 10210u. I am between those two the a485 for 110.000 pesos and the e14 for 150.000 pesos, and both with ssd 240gb and 16gb of ram. I am aiming for quality. So are those two in the same league? Cheers. PS. I will be used with Ubuntu
I just checked, i clearly criticize the display is only full hd, and i usually say the Lenovo displays are too low a resolution and too low brightness, ..! I only say I do not need 4K, but at least something >FullHD! Maybe you can 👍 instead? ;-)
@@renerebe Why would you want a higher resolution display? To get an even higher ppi/dpi? That doesn't make any sense (imo). The screen is plenty sharp (at least mine is). I have been using my Thinkpad A485 for about a month now and I have windows scaling set to 125%. So to me the FHD resolution is a bit too high for such a (relatively) small screen, rather than too low. I also don't share your experience regarding the screen brightness, I have dialled it back to 75% on mine. So why would you want even more brightness? Maybe your A485 has a dark and not too sharp screen panel or mine has an exeptionally sharp an bright one? I think we both have the same screen panel (IPS FHD), would they differ very much per A485? Or it could a matter of personal preference. To each his own I suppose. However to suggest that the Thinkpad A485's screen is too low res and not bright enough simply is not true (at least not for ALL A485s) and should not be part of a review. The laptop is better than that.
Walter E. Kurtz if you are used to sharp text all day from Hidpi you can not unser blocky pixels. I don’t ask for wasteful 4K, but a 150% scaling high dpi screen is imho what higher end users expect today. Also for idea and photo editing ....
you mean I should test? Don't really have Windows software for that, and unfortunately the test unit loaning period is also long over since then, … :-/ wish it thermal throttled less, then I would have purchased it for myself, ..! :-/
I have not analysed it in depth in the time I had this test unit, and certainly can't try liquid metal on loan units. I'm personally not a huge fan of liquid metal for potentially having it to reapply every other year or so? Also this might be partially software controllable, maybe editing some ACPI power curves a bit might be enough or have more effect than just liquid metal alone: www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/a2vs55/i_successfully_disabled_stapm_and_increased_the/ if you try something please share the results here! ;-) www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/9xzwg2/i_need_help_from_raven_ridge_mobile_and_ryzen/
if you do not have it yet, more info: I hear and read that the cheaper E485 actually has better cooling (two heat pipes or so). Though you might loose some spill proof keyboard, think-shutter, and other nice little details like this. And yes: I find it hilarious that hat the cheaper entry level model has better cooling :-/

I want sharp text and finer image details , thus higher Dpi at eg 150%

@AhaOk2398 I'm not interested in windows. I talk about my high quality Linux vector graphics. Scalings vectors is not bad.

I don't have tested all - it's also personal taste and availability. Would probably choose the non E-series, and prefer AMD APUs, ...
I hope there is an option with ryzen 3 in indonesia... Really good notebook and really good videos...
Why is their barley any reviews of this ultrabook
