Over 40 years ago when I was ten years old I was enrolled into kung Fu. I must thank my mother Mildred K Ware and my instructor Grandmaster Huang Chien -Lang for their wisdom and benevolence. I know my Kung Fu spirit has help me through many difficult times and difficult decisions. Kung Fu has allowed me to travel the world, China, Brazil, Singapore, Germany and Argentina. It has also allowed me to teach not only in my own school but in elementary schools for the past 14 years, it’s a joy to hear from student who are in college or have their own families.
Twenty years ago I opened the Western Hill Kung Fu center, now known as Academy of Kung Fu & Tai Chi. My goal was to have 8 quality students, somewhere along the way several of my early student also became family, transporting them from elementary school smacking them in the back of head for every umm used in conversation, checking to see if they were at school, being there doing times of grief, finding jobs, and celebrating achievements including births. As most families do we have had our moments of dysfunction but we find our way through it. Looking back there may have been things I should have done differently but the past is the past, I have learned and will grow better because of it.
I would like to use this time and space to congratulate Shontral Pope, one of my Kung Fu sons. Over the past 16 years it has been a joy to train you whether it be you in the little dragon class under Shi Fu April Norman’s careful watch or in Full contact class under Mr. Harper’s careful watch or us in the basement pushing to throw heel and sidekicks on the bag among other things. I hope you got as much joyful memories from the past 16 year as I have and since you endured my singing on road trips for 16 years then everthing else should be a breeze.
Good luck in your next endeavor in the Marines and if things ever get difficult remember your Kung Fu spirit and your Kung Fu family.
