I am an American who was living in Tehran Iran 76-78 and got hooked on watching German Football. This brings back great memories. I learned about the game by watching some of the best of all time. Looking back now I feel it was an honor for the opportunity to watch such great masters of the game.

A classic tournament with every match going to extra time and 19 goals in 4 matches. Every game was played with skill and a desire to play football, attack and score - and there were good players in abundance. The Yugoslav crowds applauded every move and counter-move and everyone had a really good time. As Vaclav Jezek the Czech manager said, ‘Football was the real winner.’

Only highlights but this was a really exciting game. Good West Germany team beaten by excellent Czechoslovakia team. Mid 70s football just had something about it, great skill but without the modern day tactical nous spoiling the free spirited nature of teams.

To do that (a 'Panenka') to win a European Championship was either pure genius or unbelievably reckless. The backstory about how Panenka developed that trick is very interesting as well but to pull it off on the big stage confirms him as a legend. The 'Panenka"; the Cryff turn; the Ardiles flick and the infamous Hand of God. Football moves that will forever be remembered.

This is the first time I see a recording of this match with English commentary. Until 2008, I knew about this match only from hearsay; the goals, the penalty shoot-out (especially Hoeneß' penalty) were shown on TV when there was a tournament again. Then the match was released on DVD, and I had the opportunity to watch the entire match.
Even though 32 years had gone since the match, it was exciting to watch it, and I suffered when I saw Hoeneß send the ball to the moon.

I admit I only knew the penalty shootout from this game and never (or at least not for a long time) saw the full highlights. Really missed something. No fooling around, both teams seemed to attack full speed over 120 minutes. Great fight, great technique, great goalkeeping on both sides, and everything in a fair manner. And a typical German comeback from far behind, though this time not successful in the end.
Pure sports - and such a thing is best to watch with british commentary.

In fact, eight of the starting eleven were Slovaks. Another Slovak (Jurkemik) came on as a substitute in the second half. Panenka, who became famous for his penalty kick was of Czech ethnicity and so was Ivo Viktor, an excellent goalkeeper indeed. My point is that it's not particularly sensitive to call it a Czech title. That would be like crediting all British Olympic medal to England. At the very least, both nations should get credit for the win.

Apparantly Panenka told Ivo Viktor before the tournament that if Czechoslvakia got a penalty he was going to take it like that and Viktor was so shocked he thought of telling the manager. There was also talk of Panenka being disciplined as it was an 'uncommunist' way of taking a penalty.
