What a killer month my dude!
You guys have introduced me to Blackbraid, Nechochwen, and now Sgaile over the past couple of months.
Many, many thanks to you guys for providing such great recommendations! 🤘
It’s what we do bud! Have a RAD weekend!
Hi guys Sgaile was the clear stand out for me. My Jan favs were:
1. Sgaile
2. Drown in Sulphur - Dark Secrets of the Soul (blackened symphonic deathcore)
3. Domination Campaign - A Storm of Steel (death metal/melodic death metal)
4. Blood Ted Throne - Nonagon (death metal/melodic death metal)
5. Dark Oath - Ages of Man (symphonic death metal/melodic death metal)
You guys introduced me to Sgaile and thank you for that. "Traverse the Bealach" did not leave my playlist for a second and I must be one the most atmospheric pieces of music I have listened to. Great album.
What a great start to 2024!
January starting pretty strong. My favorites this month were
Sgàile - Traverse the Bealach (saw your rec for this and I have not stopped listening to it)
Departure Chandelier - Satan Soldier Of Fortune
Vitriol - Suffer and Become
Vemod - The Deepening
Lucifer - Lucifer V
Narzissus - Akt III: Erlösung
Caligula's Horse - Charcoal Grace
Hauntologist - Hallow
Great list!!
Sgàile was by far my favorite record for January. Such an engrossing album. Also really liked Lower Form of Resistance by Dissimulator, Abyssius ST, Mycelium by Manticora, and Embrace Reality by Nemesis.
Engrossing is such a brilliant word for it.
My January picks include
-Blood Red Throne
-Upon Stone
-Knoll
-Dissimulator
-Cognizance
My January list :
Stuporous : Asylum's Lament.
Mourning Dawn : The foam of despair.
Fragments of Lost Memories : Promise.
Shamael : II Suono Di Mille Orchestre Parte II.
Good call on Hauntologist, guys. I would have totally missed this one had it not been for this video. Amazing record! Thanks once again!
Hey thanks for the review and putting us as a highlight !
Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the feature, guys! Really appreciate you checking the Engulf record out and sharing it!
Keep it up!
There were quiet a few good releases I checked out in January and they did not disappoint. Sgàile - Traverse The Bealach , Ancestral Blood - Forgotten Myths And Legends , Wolves Of Perdition - Ultraviolence , Kalt Vindur - Magna Mater , Hauntologist - Hollow , Ad Unum Omnes - Shattered Bones , Dzahatinga - Forgotten And Lost , Melinoë - Saffron Cloaked Nymph. Ad Unum Omnes, Melinoë and Dzahatinga were the three standouts for me, very impressive, hope you can check them out.
I absolutely will! Thanks man! Have a killer weekend
Thanks so much for putting Hauntologist on my radar! My favs for January are the new Vemod and Narzissus albums. What I've heard from the Sgaile album is great, I need to continue my listen! With that said, the new Obsidian Tongue WP (well planned shirt Brandon) is out today. It's A+; 2024 atmo black metal is coming in strong this year.
Yesss! So excited for Obsidian Tongue's new release.
You guys kill it! Found a couple new albums to check out from you but surprised Upon Stone was not on your list was my album of the month ;)
We can't get to them all! Thanks for showing up!
I didn't know anything about Hauntologist, ty for that. My favorites are Vitriol and Underneath From the Gut of Gaia
I love these lists! I am always excited to read them and find new stuff. Thank you guys for bringing awesome content to us!
It's what we enjoy doing! Thanks for tuning in.
I did a little top 10 myself 🤘
1. Lord Dying - Clandestine Transcendence (Mind blowing progressive sludge, with influences from prog rock, heavy sludge and even death metal. On this album, we follow The Dreamer on his journey as he dies. His experiences and feelings are put into words and music in a brilliant way!)
2. Vitriol - Suffer & Become (A punishing blend of technical and blackened death metal. There is so much to digest but once you do, it’s an incredibly satisfying experience)
3. Cognizance - Phantazein (Just how I like modern death metal, progressive, melodic, highly technical and with just a touch of, to the point, deathcore brutality.)
4. Upon Stone - Dead Mother Moon (Incredible, classic melodic death metal! One thing, it’s way to short!)
5. Sovereign - Altered Realities (Superb debut album by the Norwegian death/thrasers! Amazing riffs, leads, audible bass and the drums, omg the drums, they sound so freaking perfect!
6. Saevus Finis - Facilis Descensus Averno (Absolutely crushing, chaotic and dissonant death/doom with a strong blackened aggressivity and atmospheres)
7. Ancient VVisdom - Master of the Stone (ancient wisdom goes doom metal, while still keeping their occult rock roots. With the middle track and album closer being gloomy and atmospheric neofolk, it’s a nod to their first album. Overall really enjoyable.
8. Cariosus - Will, Until Beauty (Modern, melodic, heavy death metal with prog levels of musicianship.)
9. Sea Of Consciousness - Sea of Consciousness (new band from the Netherlands, impressive for a debut album! Progressive death metal that incorporates many elements of black and even heavy metal. It’s technical, atmospheric and melodic.
10. Manticora - Mycelium (progressive power metal from Denmark, that incorporate quite heavy components to their blend of music. It’s not rare to hear a blast beat and even some harsh vocals)
Love the concise write-ups, Forgemate! Thanks for dropping this!
My favorite releases this month: Funeral winds - 333
Inquisition - Veneration of medieval mysticism and cosmological violence (can hear they've drawn inspiration from Satyricon).
I had a hard time with that Inquisition record, felt a bit long to me. Some cool moments though.
Funeral Winds 🔥
Check it out Upon Stone - Dead Mother Moon. Amazing album!
Thanks for the rec!
Awesome start to 2024🤘🤘
Right?! What were your favs?
Added several of these albums to my queue! You guys always recommend the best stuff, keep it up!
It's what we do!!
Saxon - Hell, Fire and Damnation
Mega Colossus - Showdown
Boundless Chaos - Sinister Upheaval
Ruthless - The Fallen
Blood Red Throne - Nonagon
My picks:
1) Caligula's Horse - Charcoal Heart (Progressive Metal)
2) Hoplites - Paramainomeni (Progressive Black Metal)
3) Departure Chandelier - Satan Soldier Of Fortune (Black Metal)
4) Ribspreader - Reap Humanity (Death Metal)
5) Slift - Illion (Heavy Psych)
6) Vitriol - Suffer And Become (Technical Death Metal)
7) Inquisition - Veneration Of Medieval Mysticism and Cosmological Violence (Black Metal)
8) Saxon - Hell, Fire And Damnation (Heavy Metal)
9) Sovereign - Altered Realities (Technical Death-Thrash)
10) Sgaile - Traverse The Bealach (Progressive Metal)
11) Exocrine - Legend (Technical Death Metal)
12) Hauntologist - Hollow (Post-Black Metal)
13) Upon Stone - Dead Mother Moon (Melodic Death Metal)
14) Madder Mortem - Old Eyes, New Heart (Progressive Metal)
15) Cave Sermon - Divine Laughter (Death-Sludge)
16) Vemod - The Deepening (Atmospheric Black Metal)
17) Lucifer - Lucifer V (Heavy Metal)
18) Andracca - To Bare The Weight Of Death (Black Metal)
19) Blood Red Throne - Nonagon (Death Metal)
20) Yersin - The Scythe Is Remorseless (Crust Punk)
Fantastic round up dude! Hope you have a rad weekend!
Allow me to add a few!
Spider God
Cognizance
Funeral Winds
Hiraes
Blood Red Throne
Was just listening to Hauntologist yesterday. Loved it! And of course the Vitriol is amazing.
Killer additions my dude! Have a dope weekend!
So many sick releases the month (last month?). Never heard of Hauntologist, but definitely keen to check them out
So good dude
The new Lord Dying record isn't getting nearly as much attention as it deserves. Such a freaking banger!
So good!!
Great selection guys... Totally agree.. keep on your covers shorts!!!!😅
Really digging the new Cognizance, Resin Tomb, and Svdestada!! Cheers!
I also enjoyed that Resin Tomb record! - Ben
@Forgemaster Metal: Cognizance-Phantazein is worthy of Best album of 2024 so far. Keep bringing the great suggestions!
Thanks for the Foam of Despair. Love it as it much reminds me of Dance Of December Souls. Let The Truth Speak by Earthside is another gem for me. Prepare for Echoes of Eternity by Hanness Grossman.
That’s a great comparison!
Watched the review for the Lord Dying album of your friend Metal Meltdown and on the third listen I started to like it - here are my Top 3:
Vemod - "The Deepening"
Caligula's Horse - "Charcoal grace"
The Funeral Procession - "In Still Silence"
Yeah, Mysterium Tremendum took me a few listens until it stuck. Definitely go back and listen to that one when you can.
The funeral procession
Knoll
Exocrine
Vitriol
Advocacy
Are my 5 ❤
Awesome! Have a rad weekend my dude
A+ list. I would tack on:
Svdestada - candela
Exocrine - legend.
Knoll - as Spoken.
Nice!
The January releases I checked out were:
Upon Stone - Dead Mother Moon
Vitriol - Suffer & Become
Knoll - As Spoken
Dissimulator - Lower Form Resistance
Svdestada - Candela
The Infernal Sea - Hellfenlic
Svdestada was my favorite, it’s blackened crust from Spain.
Departure Chandelier was also available for early stream, it’d be my favorite if we include it in January, but it’s technically a February release.
Solid additions right there, mate!
Awesome, but If I may drop a tear of criticism on this episode of "album of the month" - you surely should start it with a fact that this month was IMMENSE and 7 albums is just way too low this time! Being a metalhead for almost 40 years now I can't remember any other single month spitting so many high-quality albums. If I made AOTY2024 right now, it would be more interesting than whole 2023. 4 of the 7 mentioned here are on my list as well along with Cognizance, Blood Red Throne, Madder Mortem, Knoll and above all Exocrine. Still you manged to recommend another album I didn't see mentioned elsewhere and sounds intiguing right away - Hauntologist. So there are still 11 more albums I need to check just in January 2024 - unbelievable. And BTW - I wanted to mention last time - "Czechia" is actually pronounced "check-ia"...
Thanks
Mourning dawn definitely got my attention this month (as I plan to eventually check the rest of their catalogue) because not only did this album have that blackened doom that we're familiar with, I loved those little hints of industrial which gave me godflesh vibes! An album that keeps your attention anyway and that's all I can ask! 🤘
Great ear, Forgemate. That album is BLEAK.
Vitriol really smashed by brain in, in the best way! Other albums I enjoyed from January are Exocrine, Madder Mortem and Vemod.
Great additions!
I'd say so, but my Norwegian bias is probably showing :> @@forgemastermetal
Abigor new staff is so damn good
It’s really great!
Mine are Carnal Savagery's Into the Abysmal void, Vitriols new album
Solid! I gotta scope the Carnal Savagery one.
A lot of new stuff to check out.
Def
Yeah mourning dawn sinked me into hole.Awesome album!
There is no hope with that one haha
Im still on my 2023 albums. Love that Crypta record. Only got 3 new ones on repeat.
Saxon. Meat and potatoes NWOBHM . Does the job nicely. Biff sounds great for 72.
Hiraes. Awesome Melodeath with a modernized Gossow era Arch Enemy feel. Love this album.
Nemophila- Multi styled all female metal Japanese band. Makes you feel good as much as it kicks your ass .
Nice! I didn't jive with Hiraes or Crypta. Cool to see that some folks did!
Sick list. I've been meaning to get around the listening the Lord Dying album and I should give the Mourning Dawn more spins. I listened to a lot of albums is January so there are a few albums I really enjoyed that barely missed my top ten. Here is my top ten favorite metal albums of January.
1. Svdestada - Candela (blackened crust punk)
2. Olde Throne / Paisaunt - Cearwylm & Misneachd Spilt (atmospheric black metal/melodic black metal/pagan black metal)
3. Vemod - The Deepening (atmospheric black metal)
4. The Funeral Procession - In Still Silence (progressive death metal/melodic death metal/melodic black metal aka Opeth & Katatonia worship)
5. Sgàile - Traverse The Bealach (progressive metal/post-rock)
6. Infant Island - Obsidian Wreath (blackened screamo/post-metal/post-rock/shoegaze)
7. Ὁπλίτης - Παραμαινομένη (avant-garde black metal: black metal/death metal/mathcore/free jazz)
8. Resin Tomb - Cerebral Purgatory (blackened deathgrind/sludge metal)
9. Departure Chandelier - Satan Soldier of Fortune (melodic black metal)
10. Chimeras - Silent Cries in the Stifling Haze (symphonic doom metal)
Funeral Procession was really good!
I kept on getting drawn back in to Malist's Of Scorched Earth throughout the entirety of the month; DEFINITELY a favorite in terms of one-man projects at least. It's quite an utterly stunning & dynamic experience of atmo black metal 🖤
As for others.. Kalt Vindur, Vitriol, Upon Stone, Departure Chandelier, Vemod, Hiraes & Saevus Finis absolutely have my heart
I admit Malist is still in my queue, I’ve heard it’s great though.
@@forgemastermetal In my opinion it's worth the praise, Ovfrost is a very capable vocalist & instrumentalist. Some releases of the past have fallen short, OSE is a considerable improvement to the previous album, but regardless the general sound is quite immersive, a more thorough mix of at times breathtaking melodies and viciousness. Certainly a must-have :)
The Lord Dying album was very good. My other favourites were -
Blood Red Throne -Nonagon
Upon Stone - Dead Mother Moon
The Funeral Procession -In Still Silence
Dissimulator- Lower Form Resistance 🤘
Great additions!
I want to throw in the following to add:
BLOOD RED THRONE - Nonagon
MALIST - Of Scorched Earth
OLHAVA - Sacrifice
Nice additions!!
Hope you guys are hearing the new records from SPECTRAL VOICE, WANDERING OAK, & CHAPEL OF DISEASE. Metalwise, 2024 is starting off hard. Bless you and keep you.
BIG SCENIC NOWHERE, ECTOPLASMIC WORM & SEA OF CONCIOUSNESS also kick 31 flavors of ass.
New MELVINS comin out. That's fun. Christ, I gotta go to bed...
MELVINS 1992 Stoner witch is the record that initially brought me to doom. Btw, thanks for dropping YOB's name so much. They deserve to be famous.
Bellwitch only did it once. YOB keeps doing it. Sorry to be commenting so much, but its metal night. Many beers, many shots, many bongrips. Insomnia is a bitch.
This is such a general question but how many times do you guys listen to an album before coming up with a review?
Kind of a loaded answer, but for me if I feel no need to revisit an album, I probably won’t even bother reviewing it. It takes me at least a couple spins to get my head around a record and find my favorite moments, then I get my thoughts around that.
Cancer Christ was sick af!!!
Good one!
Blood Red Throne and Inquisition also released amazing records 🤘
They did! They’re really good! I didn’t really feel a need to respin them though.
Scottish metal is always top tier
The two I would add for this month would be Exocrine's Legend and Corbian's Farewell. Exocrine released the early front runner for Tech Death AOTY, and Corbian released a tight album where every song seems to be from a different genre. It goes from Synthwave, to Progressive, to Deathcore, and beyond lol. Definitely my surprise of the month.
I spun exocrine today and it didn’t stick for some reason, but I’m determined to revisit it a few more times before dismissing it.
@@forgemastermetal definitely a huge turn into different direction than The Hybrid Suns and I can see how this will off-put many, but it totally clicked with me and will surely go very high in AOTY. But that's music - one can't be everyone's love-child. Still there are plenty of other albums to choose from this month ;)
Clandestine is pronounced cladenstine, have you not watched thralls of metal?
on a serious note: Great video and thanks for the list!
Haha we love to mispronounce things, too.
Inquisition released the best metal album so far this year imo.
It’s good, they’ve never really done anything for me tbh
Don't know if that Vitriol album is the best release of January, but I'm pretty sure it's the most brutal and intense of the month! 🤗 After listening to approximately half the album, I need to take a shower before taking on the rest of it; that shit make you feel dirty and unclean in no time.. ☠️☠️
What would your best of the month be?
@@forgemastermetal Well, if sonically turning your brain into mush was the only parameter, then that Vitriol album would win hand's down, but artistically I'd probably go for the new Caligula's Horse release; can't say I have fully taken the full scope of the album in yet, but I sense a potential little masterpiece in the prog. metal genre ... 🤔
Lots of praise for that record going around!
Debut album from young Swedish thrashers Xion is mighty as fuck, and the biggest heaviest album of the month for me was Blood Red Throne!!
BRT was good, but I didn’t really feel a need to respin it. I’ve been a fan of them for years and for some reason it just didn’t wow me.
@@forgemastermetal Ah yeah, I got taken from first listen! But I hadn't really listened to em before either. Highly recommend checking out Xion if you wanna hear SFSGSW style riffage with an old school Hetfield barking vocal on top!
BRT is great, but Vitriol is WAY more brutal. Did you give it a spin?
I really enjoyed the new Saxon record. I also really liked the debut album from Rhûn (side-project of Falls of Rauros) and the drumming on that Vitriol album! And as much as I freaking hate to admit it, Inquisition made a good album again (obligatory ROT IN HELL to their lead singer)... which I won't mention on my channel because, well, people like the singer of that band DO NOT DESERVE TO BE PLATFORMED. END OF FREAKIN' STORY.
Eh I didn’t think that record was any better than “good but I won’t revisit it”
Yeeeeeeehaw 🤠
🤠
Lord Dying
Ghoul
Hell yeah!
Hauntologist didn't hit me nearly as hard as i was expecting. A few great moments here and there but i found most of it kinda boring, even with multiple listens. I might revisit it later in the year and see how i feel
Sgaile is solid but i mentioned before i really despise the ultra-slick production. It really kills the atmosphere and vibe they are going for, especially with all the melodyne effects on literally every vocal line. It feels very unnatural as a result. A more organic approach would have made this 10x better imo! Oh well. Still a very worthy release regardless
Loved the Vitriol. Holy hell! Total face-melter. And the drumming is off-the-charts insane.
Some other bangers for me were Infant Island, Inquisition, Vemod, and Abigor... great month for black metal
All fair points man. For some reason black metal
Isn’t hitting me this month. I’ve got all those albums marked to revisit some other time. I’ve spun them at least once but wasn’t vibing. 100% me I think.
Hey Ardroth, just a quick correction on the Sgaile thing, I produced the album and just wanted to weigh in quickly. Totally fair enough that you didn't like the production! But in terms of the vocals there wasn't a single bit of Melodyne used...I both produced the vocals and was with Tony for most of the vocal tracking. I don't actually own or use Melodyne, because I only tend to work with metal and I'm a pretty strong believer in just retaking the vocals until they're good. The quality of Tony's voice is incredibly strong, he's one of my favorite vocalists to work with, but what I think you're mistaking for tuning is the fact he harmonises most lines throughout the entire album. It's not that common to have that many harmonies consistently (with a lot of vocal layering too), and I can understand why that may give you the impression of a tuned vocal.
But yeah, not trying to call you out, just pointing out that Tony is genuinely just a phenomenal vocalist. If you listen to it carefully you can hear plenty of notes and little imperfections that would've been totally annihilated by trying to tune them.
Thanks for chiming in!! We love to hear what the producers have to say.
Hope a lot from the Vitriol album. Maybe that made me disappointed. I think that the composition and production do not have the coherence and congruence of To Bathe From The Throat Of Cowardice. Some song passages have excellent lyrical technique and narrative but overall it's a Btier for me.
I've been sick and tired of post-anything metal since about 2011.
You’re post sick
YOUR MOM... is blessed and happy wherever she is@@forgemastermetal
She sure is
How much is your all's light bill? Lol
Not much! They’re LEDs and they’re only on for a couple hours a week. My heating bill, that’s a different story lol
