I can understand a potential difference in video quality vs 4K blu-ray given increased file sizes assuming similar encoding. However I thought TrueHD was lossless already on disc and equivalent to the studio master but read some reporting better audio quality. Does anyone know if there truly is an audio difference compared with TrueHD tracks on disc?
There's not going to be audio difference from disc to K when it comes to lossless sound. Most of time when people are talking about K's "superior" audio, they are comparing to streaming-based audio. My comments in the video about quality is focused toward video.
Get an Nvidia shield with Plexiglass and save yourself thousands and stop getting ripped off. Total waste of money for no perceivable difference in audio and video. I got a server with 300TB of storage, threadripper CPU, QP2000 graphic card, RTX 4090 and aorus extreme motherboard for less than 10k dollars rather than wasting my money on this rip off
The value of K isn't just about potentially better quality than physical media. There's a lot more to it. "Waste of money" is also a personal/relative thing, not an absolute. Nothing is really absolute. There are plenty of ways going the big server/ripping route has cons and failure modes as well. To each their own. Both solutions are great depending on one's needs and available cash and/or time to spend on the hobby.
@@Techthusiasm did you hear what I said. I got 300TB of storage, multiple virtual machines, dockers for my home automation. K is a waste of cash given the option of Plex and Nvidae shield. Unless you have 12bit TV that can reach 10 nits (which doesn't exist) the extra bit rate u get from K ain't gonna do nothing to the movie
Yep, I read it. My response stands. There are many considerations at play in comparing the virtues of ripping servers and K. It's far from a slam dunk for either option. What you have is great for you, I'm sure. That doesn't mean K is a "waste" for those that can afford and enjoy it. I'll get into this topic in longer form in coming live streams.
Please don't take as an attack just asking questions. When you buy a movie does it live on your hardware or theirs? Can you access movies if your internet is down? What if they go out of business - would you still have access? Yes, I buy physical media because I am paranoid about my collection.
No attack at all, my friend! LOL, I've literally had people tell me my face is ugly on here. You're asking legit questions! :) When you buy a movie with K, it lives in your account. You can then download it to your local hardware to watch at your leisure. You can also download, delete, and download again later. Many of us use the platform this way as I have far more movies in my account than I have local storage to hold them all. Downloaded movies can be played without live internet access. Of course without internet access though, you will not be able to download additional content. If K goes out of business, your downloaded content should still continue to be playable. The prevailing thought as well has been if K goes out, the movie studios could transition your movie rights to another platform, perhaps.
@@Techthusiasm People can definitely be jerks. I have a YT channel as well and the comments can be fun. If you can have them local, then if they went out of business you still have the collection. The cost of entry is high for sure. I assume you cant add your own collection of movies to it?
I've been pretty blessed with the community this channel has built to date. Some really great folks and the negative stuff is really a minute part of the overall feedback and comments. K now is really built around their store and digital/online distribution, so adding personal content to the platform really isn't part of it any more.
K was originally part of Ultraviolet and I had a large UV library that ported in a little bit before UV failed and closed up. So I really benefited from that timing. Since then, I did do a good amount of disc to digital on K and then usually buy on bundles and sales.
But what’s going to happen to Kaleidescape when streaming 10 years or so from now becomes the high quality for the fraction of the cost? 20 years ago streaming movies didn’t even exist. I wonder what’s going to happen in another 10 years? Competition is on its way. Just wondering if Kaleidescape will even be around? Just remember competition is a good thing!
If streaming goes high bit rate video and lossless, then K is in big trouble. I revert back instantly to use my Apple iTunes library and would have no need for K at that point. The concern is, it's been years already and streaming at that level of quality hasn't come. I think it will, but will it be this year? 3 years? 10 years? That's a long time potentially, so I'll happily enjoy my K system in the meantime.
Question for you!, on your terra does it have a noise it makes? Like my Strato is dead silent but the Terra (6TB compact) does make a noise, it’s sort of loud enough where when I had it in my media console unit I would hear it easily, now I have it in a rack in a closet so non issue however, just worried something is wrong with it.
I don't really notice noise, but my devices are in a rack in another room. That said, even when I'm in that room doing things, I don't notice the Terra. I could try to kick off a download though and put my ear up to it or also during playback and listen.
@@Techthusiasm thanks! However, the noise it has is like constantly always on. No downloads or anything being played and it’s there. Weird.but yeah if you can take a Listen that would be greatly appreciated
There is a mechanical hard drive in there. So when the Terra is on/operational, the drive is spinning, but that shouldn't be loud. Writing and such you can hear some hard drive grinding type noise, but that should be intermittent and not that loud. If you have constant, loud grinding or such noises that could be a bad drive.
@@Techthusiasm yeah that’s what I’m thinking. I did IT before and remember the drives would grind a bit, but this is like constantly. At first I thought they were fans but, the Terra never goes above 40 usually hovering in that 38 range
K does have a way to do disc to digital and use your discs to pay some amount of money (depending on the studio) to get digital copies in their store. Your best bet is to try and work with a dealer on this as it requires specific K hardware that is no longer generally available.
This is one of my dream theater items and at their current pricing it will remain a dream. 😀 I enjoyed your video on the K and MKV file size comparisons. My question is have you done any critical real world comparison of the same movie in both formats and found enough difference (regardless of file size) to justify the cost in this system versus almost limitless storage I could replace it with for less cost and ripping MKV's? Just curious if there is actual visual and audible difference that is quantifiable (5% better, 20% better, etc.) or would it be a placebo effect thing where I'm trying to convince myself that it's better because I paid so much for it. I swear I have done that with some audio equipment in the past.
I'm thinking of ways to try some blind comparison content coming up. We'll see. No promises for when that might happen though. I will say that over the last week or so I decided to watch all 5 of the original Planet of the Apes movies (I had only ever seen the first one). I have them all in K in HD and I also have the Blu-ray rips on my server. The K download sizes are 50 - 80% larger depending on the movie. I did some quick comparing of a couple of them and felt the K download did look nicer/cleaner/better. Add in the ease of access, automation integration, and other benefits, and K is a win.
I am located in Auckland NewZealand, never used kaleidescape, what’s difference when playing movies between Kaleidescape and other hi-end player such as Zappiti reference or Zidoo alpha etc? Suppose we have same BD file iso or MKV file for playing. I notice that kaleidescape just use very normal power cord , and equipment is very slim…
The main difference is that with K you "download" directly to the K server/player. With Zappiti/Zidoo, you have to rip your own media to either a HDD, or NAS. They both then are served via your network for playback.
K hardware is a generally nice package. Feels solid and high end, although yes, nothing special about power delivery. They don't use toroidal supplies, for example, which would be cool at this price. In that respect, you could argue the higher end Zappiti is a higher end hardware. Per my other video, a lot of K store content is "larger" in size than the disc counterpart releases. More bits theoretically can equal higher fidelity, but disc rates are already pretty high. I think if one wants to justify K, you have to value it more for other things like the ease of access and other platform features along with potential of being the highest quality source of content. Getting discs, storing discs, managing discs, and getting into ripping discs can all be a bit of a pain. K makes the process of owning, collecting, and watching movies at that higher quality seamless and elegant. Is that "worth" it? That's a personal decision based on your available spending power.
Kscape is absolutely top tier, great equipment and something that doesn’t move the needle for me. Lol. I still DO NOT see the cost justified. Sorry. This is the case for a lot of folks based on K's price. It's marketed as a "luxury" device with luxury pricing. But cost and value are scalable concepts. What's expensive for one person is a drop in the bucket to another, so "worth" is a very relative concept.
The movies that you buy are really not yours they can take that movie down anytime they want they can edit they can do whatever with the movies that’s why I do not do Clyde escape or others I’d rather buy physical discs instead
That's the case for most any digital purchases. That bothers some folks, which is fine. I'm OK with it. I buy a lot of content of different types (movies, TV, music, books, games, and more) electronically.
