Keep listening, Ive heard it thousands of times over the years. Hell, ive seen it live maybe 45 times (I've seen the Stones 60 times) This is a song that will live on long before me and you die, and I'm closer to that shit than you
Is there a band, singer, songwriter nowadays, who could write anything remotely as good as this? Lyrics, harmonies, drums, guitars, I can't think of anyone alive who would even come close.
No, there isn't, and never will be again. From here to our end iot's going to be nothing but ultrasonic female vocalists that cause headaches. I saw them perform this (and Gimme Shelter) in 1972. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. The joints went around the room clockwise.
My childhood friend, Karen L. Anderson passed away on April 23, 2023. This song resonates with me because we both struggled with getting what we wanted, and I don't think it's possible on this earth. See you in heaven girl, our real home without all the heartaches. Until we meet again, Karen, I will miss you with all of my 10 year old heart. Love you, Shelley
I've been single for so long, wanting love has been one of my greatest wants, but every time I try, they always leave me. I made the conscience decision awhile ago to stop trying and accept that in life, we cant always get what we want. Accepting it has made me feel better, its hard and sometimes painful, but I'll live. Thank you stones, reminding me that its okay to feel like this
Yeah man, same here. Feel you completely. I'm 48 and I'm finally coming to terms that, despite me being a really good person, love and togetherness is something I'll never have. As you said, it hurts, sometimes more than most, but facing the music is the way forward. Maybe not happy, not as much as I would have been, definitely not complete or fulfilled, but alive and learning and trying to improve and better myself every day.
I was named after their song Angie and I went to watch them live in concert 15years ago hoping to hear this tune. They got to the end of the set without singing it but to my surprise they came back on stage for their encore....me hoping it was Angie but instead he sang 'you can't always get what you want...' yup. I had to smile
My son had yet another heartache today, and there's literally zero I can do, except send him this song. It is what it is, man. Nobody said it wouldn't hurt. Honestly I wish it didn't. But life is unfair and full of pain and sorrow and the only thing we can do is make sure those don't turn into regrets, so we can put them down and move on.
your writing is so comforting in a way and understanding rather than trying to brush it off. I could only hope I am able to comfort others around me to this level.
Rest in Peace my dear Super Uncle, your song..... My Youth Hero and my rockstar and his long blond hair charming everyone that ever set eyes on him with his friendly ways and laughter. Took me to his bar as a 5 year old and he bought me a bottle of soda as I was watching the old generation playing cards drinking beer. The last couple of years when my Aunt died we would meet more often at the Bar, getting drunk and making memories. And now, as unfair as Life is, he is gone, died in his sleep.. Our family lost one of it's pearls Today.. The Stones lost one of it's biggest fans Today.
Beautiful song and a great learning tool for my 7 yr old daughter. Everytime I say no and she throws a fit this song magically turns on. Definitely gonna play this at her wedding
This song kills me, Instant tears... sometimes we make our loved ones go away, and when you try to get them back, to "fix" all the irrational mistakes you made, you will find... that you cannot get what you want, not always... sometimes its over, and its your fault, and you gotta live with that for the rest of your life... wonderful song.
Damn I am in the same position. Made a stupid decision and my best friend left me. Been trying to get her back for 2 months now but I guess it's time to let her go.

Life is full of painful events, and it sometimes makes you feel like you can't get over these things like complete darkness. But, As We don't get the feeling of beauty through the good events, life itself is valuable from our imperfection, which is like the way that We can find out how marvelous the light becomes through the dark.
You are so true. The stones are doing a tour in St. Louis on the 26th of September this year. Charlie( drummer) won't be there for the 1st time since 1969, but is 80 and recovering from emergency surgery. Then Charlotte, etc. I'm from Missouri and would love to go, but later they'll be in Nashville as well and that's closer to Kentucky, where I moved to. Love The Stones. 💜
I wonder if an artist in 2020 could convince his producers to let him open a song with a choir and a french horn solo. Especially if you were a blues-rock band. Tremendous creativity. Bring back the sixties!
Liam Gallagher brought it back last Friday. The first song on his new album 'c'mon you know' is basically his version of 'you can't always get what you want'.
The whole track is incredible but the section from 4:18 where the choir comes in and holds that note... it sends shivers down me every time. It's marvellous! :D

The greatest rock band ever made in music rock history creating unique timeless classic masterpieces this is one of them never gets old brings back so many memories and still hits you hard to your whole system... rock n roll forever...!!!!!R.I.P. Charlie Watts you will be missed by everyone......
This song could not have been created by a band around for just a few years. It's a timeless classic by the greatest blues/rock band that ever existed.
I first heard this song 50 years ago and fell in love with it immediately. Especially the chorus at the beginning. This particular video is the best that I have found on this song.
Dang, this song is inspiring! Life is all about trying, aiming high, having goals. Sometimes you'll do it, sometimes you won't, but you'll grow either way, and what you need is always more fulfilling and satisfying than what you want in the long run anyway.
well, any growing presumed by anyone is certainly accelerated for those who are practiced at the art of deception.... but especially for those who grew out of and fly above it.
Mick's philosophy, you can't always get what you want. That's a true statement for most people. But,for Mick he always gets what he wants, he also finds that he gets what he needs.
In the summer months of 2019, Spotify harassed me with this song. Every daily mix I played, it was there. Every recommended playlist? It was there. I could not escape it. Then in late August of that year, I finally succumbed to the Spotify algorithm. Oh my God. I'm so glad I did. This song gives me a sense of nostalgia that I can't quite explain, and a sense of reassurance. I listen to it whenever I feel blue or just need a pick me up, and I also play it whenever. The beginning is wonderful, so is the acoustic section at 0:53-2:03 and so 3:28-3:49 and 4:16-4:30 AND 5:44 to the end. Actually, I stand corrected: 0:00-7:30 is the most magnificent part. Enjoy first-time listeners and thousand-time listeners alike! Edit: I was also supposed to see them in May, but of course that was canceled, and overall this song has helped me get through the hardships of 2020 and beyond.
We all love that Chorus! But! “I saw her today at the reception A glass of wine in her hand I knew she would meet her connection At her feet was her footloose man” to “I saw her today at the reception In her glass was a bleeding man She was practiced at the art of deception Well, I could tell by her blood-stained hands, sing it” Just hits me right in my feels. ❤
For some inexplicable reason, this song ALWAYS reminds me of an elusive girlfriend from decades past. I met Mary back in the early 90s while living just outside Washington DC. We were both young, up-and-coming professionals of promise in our respective fields. Mary was a lithesome, brilliant, free-lance journalist with contributions in US News & World Report and other highly-regarded, syndicated print publications. Winsome, slender, perceptive, and with legs up to her neck and piercing blue-eyes that perceived much and missed little, Mary was the kind of woman all men sought, as did I. But Mary had another agenda, one that didn't include love, marriage and all the things that modern women (as they always have) considered impediments to a successful career. Mary rejected my romantic overtures, but was tactful enough to do so in such a way as to remain a close friend and confident. I didn't mind since I knew the sea was full of fish, and female companionship, so I was content to be her back-up when she needed a date somewhere with someone who wouldn't try get into her shorts at the end of the evening. Together we had many splendid outings, from parties at Embassy's and the World Bank to steeple chases in the Virginia country side. Indeed, even when I attend those events now, I still half expect to see her there, with her long blonde hair flowing, glittering in the iridescent sun, surrounded by admirers. And I have to say, in that capacity as a friend, we had tremendous fun. No relationship complications, no fights, we were pretty much like brother and sister (in fact, we both introduced the other to people as just that). In the end, I finally met the woman of my dreams, to whom I've been married for some 23 years now. But I still hold dear those memories of Mary, of what was and what might have been. There's not a street corner or sidewalk in Georgetown or Old Town, Alexandria that doesn't evoke memories of our time together. Sadly, Mary passed away a few years back of cancer. It came as a shock as I had spoken to her only a couple weeks before her passing and she sounded as strong and vibrant as ever. The funny thing is, after her passing, one of her friends confided that Mary had always adored me. I miss her every day, or perhaps it was the magic of our youth that I miss now and of lives free from consequences, but at any rate, Mary was the one thing in life that I wanted but couldn't get, but in exchange, I got what I needed. Thanks, Mary...and now through the past, darkly, she comes. :-)
That was wonderful to read. I never read loooong comments, but I remained riveted to this one to the end. It's a bittersweet ending . I felt like I was listening to a close friend tell me the story. You must be a writer too ?
Unusually long to keep my interest, tried not to read its entirety twice, but here I am sending you the warmest of wishes, and a new look on life. Thank you

So many great songs by the Stones, this one might just be their best one. And I can say that while not necessarily feeling the it's my favorite, but it's just so uplifting and free. Brian Jones's contributions to the band's sound were dwindling away by this time. Years of undeserved Establishment persecution had ground this sensitive man into the dirt. Paradoxically, this grim period found the Stones at their sonic and lyrical peak, as in this epic masterpiece.
Happy 50th anniversary to this wonderful hit of The Rolling Stones! I’ve ALWAYS dug the choir introduction; they’ve always reminded me of the kids’ choir in the (1970’s) Electric Company Song “He plays the violin on the vine.” Then again, being that Electric Company was produced after this song was, the choir of kids singing “Violin on the vine” could have been inspired by the choir into in this.
4:17 for the life of me I can’t explain what the following 30 seconds do inside of my body...the crescendo leading up to the choir...man oh man it’s got to be the best music arrangement ever

T I M E L E S S ... true😀
Yeah... For the longest time I thought someone got a glass of wine poured on their head out of jealousy...
Keep listening, Ive heard it thousands of times over the years. Hell, ive seen it live maybe 45 times (I've seen the Stones 60 times) This is a song that will live on long before me and you die, and I'm closer to that shit than you
It's been changed right? This modern version has new instruments added and others taken out.

"you can't always get what you want
but if you TRY you find what you need"
Via only two lyrics, The Rolling Stones give an awesome life lesson!!
I've been single for so long, wanting love has been one of my greatest wants, but every time I try, they always leave me. I made the conscience decision awhile ago to stop trying and accept that in life, we cant always get what we want. Accepting it has made me feel better, its hard and sometimes painful, but I'll live. Thank you stones, reminding me that its okay to feel like this
A good book to read Celestean Phophacy 👍
I feel you. Me too.
Don’t stop. Keep looking.
It’s worth it I promise.
That's real blues, dude. You're living it, good or bad. Bless you!
I was named after their song Angie and I went to watch them live in concert 15years ago hoping to hear this tune. They got to the end of the set without singing it but to my surprise they came back on stage for their encore....me hoping it was Angie but instead he sang 'you can't always get what you want...' yup. I had to smile
Awesome
Special artist.

Best version of this song with the female singers on start... gives me a holy feeling and cheering me up when I can't always get what I want. One of the best songs.
I prefer the live version performed at the Rock n Roll Circus
True but it is just a song the whole world is f....... at this point in time
They're not female though!

When I saw 'em live back in '81, there were 65,000 people singing along to this song. Beautiful moment I'll never 4get.
Undeniably one of the greatest rock n roll albums of all time. It is as relevant today as when it was rekeased 55 years ago. There is no group ever who has accomplished what the stoned have dine. As philosopher mick jagger once said you can’t always get what you want
Cheers!
But if you try sometime, you get what you need.

Life is full of painful events, and it sometimes makes you feel like
you can't get over these things like complete darkness.
But, As We don't get the feeling of beauty through the good events,
life itself is valuable from our imperfection, which is like the way that
We can find out how marvelous the light becomes through the dark.
A great funeral song! The ten rising progressions by the choir at the end is spiritual.
I wonder if an artist in 2020 could convince his producers to let him open a song with a choir and a french horn solo. Especially if you were a blues-rock band. Tremendous creativity. Bring back the sixties!
100% The scope, the depth, the breadth, the creativity is breathtaking. Makes today's no-talent, crotch grabbing one-note wonders look pathetic.
No because they care about the bottom line, never take any chances and have zero artistic integrity, music is a joke now
... and let said producer play drums.
Liam Gallagher brought it back last Friday.
The first song on his new album 'c'mon you know' is basically his version of 'you can't always get what you want'.
This one of the best songs I have ever listened to. Rolling Stones always give me chills when I listen to them
The whole track is incredible but the section from 4:18 where the choir comes in and holds that note... it sends shivers down me every time. It's marvellous! :D

Before I die I need to listen to this track while I'm watching a Scottish landscape in the coast, under the fog and a light rain, the green grass.

This was beautiful. Thanks
That was wonderful to read. I never read loooong comments, but I remained riveted to this one to the end. It's a bittersweet ending . I felt like I was listening to a close friend tell me the story. You must be a writer too ?
You wanted Mary at the time, but instead you got want you needed, your amazing wife. Rest in peace to Mary.
Beautiful.. Thanks for sharing! I'm sure everyone has one person from their youth that we look back on and think.. What if..

4:28 that's the most unique screem I've ever heard. Holly molly, I'm amazed.
The choir part just ties it all together. Beautiful.
