Thanks for posting! There’s a lot of confusion with respect to securement of four-wheeled or machinery with tracks. The four point securement requirement only applies to such machinery that weighs 10K lbs or more. In this instance, the forklift is properly secured; even the rear chain. However, if this forklift exceeded the 10K lbs threshold; the rear chain, as it is attached, would be incorrect. Why? Because, 49 CFR Part 393, Subpart 1 states that four-wheeled or tracked machinery over 10K lbs can use a single chain with two binders, attached to two anchor points BUT, must have slack in the middle of the chain. The securement method on the rear of this forklift clearly has no slack in the center; however, given it’s weight, it’s not required.

I want to pick up a fork lift and only have 4 heavy duty diamond plate straps and winch with j hooks that will give me 6 points of contact or does it have to be chain

You could hook Jhook under if theres a place make it tot so no slack. Also throw two straps in middle one go both ways pulling in both directions also one on forks you should be ok just my opinion

Isn’t the chain in the back only one point of securement? The front is two points I see that but I think the back is only considered one point.

I like it as a safety net cause I have towed with one and it get slack more often then two binder does, also pulls chain tighter

The chain the back is useless! That's only considered one point of contact. You should've gone through the counterweights out by the tires hook chains which will give you two individual chains making it a legal four-point of contact. As far as the two straps go if it made you feel better that's fine but not necessary. The forks are built onto the lift so it's not considered an attachment like buckets and baskets on other equipment. Overall job well done!

That rear chain is NOT useless! We are a forklift rental/dealership and transport them on a daily basis, that forklift should weigh in around 8k to 9k lb there for that single point contact on the rear is totaly fine considering your chain and binder can cover atleast 50% of your load. In fact you can do the same on the front UNLESS, your forklift weighs more that 10,001lb then you defenately need 4 point of contact.
Belly strap is an option but no need, it does help on forklifts with pneumatic tires since they are quite bouncy.
And yes, Ive got inspected many many times at the DOT scales and pass everytime.
But hey, if you want to do a 4 point of a 1000 lb forklift if such thing then go for it.

You forgetting the chain is supposed to hold maybe 3-5000 so he good on that.. putting 2 binders on the back I believe was a waist
