  • The Monte Brè funicular or Funicolare Cassarate to Monte Brè (FMB) is in the city of Lugano. This metre gauge funicular railway is in two stages and connects the lower station of Cassarate with a station at the summit of Monte Brè.
The first section connects the stations of Cassarate in the Lugano suburb and Suvigliana. This section is 196 metres, 643 feet long. At Suvigliana passengers then cross the road to the lower station of the second funicular railway that is much longer and takes you to the summit of Monte Brè at 883 metres, 2,897 ft. At the summit, there are magnificent views of the city and Lake Lugano. This second section is 1,403 metres, 4,603 feet long, with stations at Albonago, Aldesago and Brè Villaggio. The three stops are for the villages of Suvigliana, Albonago and Aldesago, all found on the western side of Monte Brè.
The city gave permission for the construction of the funicular railway in 1905. The lower section opened 10th June 1908, and the upper section in 17th February 1912.
In 1959, the cars of the lower section were changed to new metal-bodied cars in a modern style. Each car has a capacity of 42. New cars were installed in the upper section in 1984 with a capacity of 68 and cleverly designed with an antique appearance.
Artwork now adorns the carriages, celebrating 115 years of service - 1908 to 2023.
