    I was a Canadian trucker and did alot of off road stuff in northern BC to oil rigs in the 1960's and 70's. I was also an outdoor person and if I would have broke down, knew how to survive. I watch what these people do, hanging from a chopper, or swimming in ice cold water, trying to get to impossible spots, and swinging around over ships in snow storms, just blows me away. I thought to myself they are either insane, or brave or both. No matter which, I have nothing but respect for them. It takes a super person to do what they do.

    Rescue teams everywhere are amazing. I know I couldn't do that job, I fell apart after helping with an accident. Those brave people who can do it more than twice in a lifetime definitely deserve better treatment! They do a good job of making it look easy, but it isn't. Thank goodness someone can handle that kind of work! The ER people are very important, too, I wasn't trying to leave them out of the credit, but they weren't really part of this video. I am not less grateful to them, just trying a tiny bit to keep to the subject, only now I feel I shorted them...
    *Edit: that one dude needs to get out more or read more, something. Alaska isn't the only damp state. Even Arizona has some damp spots. There is a very good reason "fire starting kits" exist. Better if you know how to make your own, but even the store bought stuff is better than an empty pocket. I would not suggest anyone go into a rural area with out one, even if they never need it in 50 or more years. At the very least, know how to make one. Trying to figure it out in an emergency is not a good time to start. Please do learn, because death doesn't seem to be much fun.

    Alaska weather is insane. When I was in the USAF they sent me out to Shemya to replace a TACAN. as we landed I swear I could have just stepped out of the plane and walked. Pilot said he set it down with 37 knots of ground speed.

    Great show. Question for anyone who knows: I see that Adak is some 1600 miles from their base at Sitka - about the same distance as LA! Did they fly the helo to Adak in the C-130 or island hop all the way out there? There were a few shots of the C-130 at Adak but the sequence was unclear.

    • @katelights

      pretty common to put helos in cargo planes for delivery.

      During the planning, right after one of the pilots asked the ODO for weather, the scene switches to a map. There's several points and ETA on there, plus they mention "two or three" fuel stops, so my guess is they ferried from stop to stop, maybe with replacement crew in back to keep it moving, while the 130 went ahead with the flight crew for the actual evolution that started out of Adak.
      I can't remember which episode, but they actually showed one long distance rescue doing it that way.

    How does the health care / insurance system work with these cases? Do people get charged for rescues?

    • @jleif7736
      @jleif7736 2 года назад

      For starters it's not a healthcare, insurance issue. the only think that usually costs money is if people need medical attention, then you see your typical medical bill costs. But for the rescue itself, nobody is billed for it. They might get billed for leaving their vessel at sea, but for the rescue itself, it's considered a public service.

    Why do paramedics and other medical professionals think that if they look nervous it would be worse for the patient? I have a severe allergic disorder, and have insanely frequent anaphylaxis. It drives me nuts when they don't seem to be responding to my urgency. I have had SO many experiences where they under-estimate how sick I am, and have gone into cardiac arrest because an ER doctor didn't believe me. If I'm telling you that I am going to be unconscious in under a minute, and they respond "Everything is going to be fine." is the MOST anxiety provoking thing- it means you're not hearing me. I want to know what my BP is, my O2 stats, etc etc. Patients are more and more informed, and using placating tones makes us crazy. How about "I hear ya, I'm on top of it. What would you normally do next?" Or "I see your BP is thru the roof, is that normal for you?" Because I KNOW that if my BP is 240/145 you're worried (or utterly incompetent, but that's rare). Patients want to know if they should be worried, and if you're worried enough. And people aren't idiots- we can see if your affect and your actions don't match, and it just makes things confusing as hell. I don't want you to be calm, I want you to be in control. And never, ever, lie to me. Don't tell me i am going to be okay if I'm not.

    Old CG joke, told by my late-ex USN corpsman, who had great respect for Coasties:
    How do you tell the difference between a Navy vessel & a CG vessel?
    If a CG vessel sinks, you get to walk to shore.
    (I know, I know, it's a very outdated joke!)

    The USCG rescue swimmer role lacks utility. In Australasia the top tier civilian rescue helicopter services have intensive care paramedics (far more qualified and experienced than air medical corpsman) and which are also rescue swimmers.
