I'm a retired Marine who was a platoon commander in Vietnam and served 2 more years in counter-insurgency operations in Latino America. I had many brushes with death but not as many as the Coast Guard saving people every day. If you want to be in the fight every day for the US, then join the Coast Guard. If you want to join the military (the Coast Guard is the military), and have an operational mission every day, then join the Coast Guard. If you only want to face the enemy every few years then join the other military services. I served in the Marine Corps for 21 years. During those years I served 3 years in combat. I can assure you that the Coast Guard has an operational mission 24/7 every year. I only had 3 years in combat. The insensitive of combat might have been different, but, the Coast Guard has a much more operational mission than anything I had in 3 years in combat. The Coast Guard is one of the best military units in the military.
Respect to you sir! Thank you for your service! I can't even begin to imagine what these guys go through with the extremes that they deal with. The level of training that they have to go through to be able to handle whatever challenge is thrown at them at any given time is awe inspiring! Sadly they are the least recognized branch of the military yet they face tougher situations every day than many do in an entire military career.
Thanks for your service in both. All military services are so needed. America would not be America without all branches of our military services and special oops. May God watch over them all and their families.
With all respect, the Coast Guard is amazing; however, my Dad was in the Navy during WWII and he faced the enemy. He had shrapnel from a Kamikaze pilot hitting the ship (an LST the length of a football field that could hold dozens of Sherman tanks). His ship was sent to Hiroshima the day after the atom bomb fell and anchored 1/2 mile off-shore while the US Army Corps of Engineers they were carrying went onshore to view the damage. My Dad and 100 of his shipmates stood at the railing with their binoculars trained on the sight for 2 hours--and none of them spoke a word. He fought in the largest navy battle in history (South Pacific). Then he went back and fought in the Korean War. I appreciate all of the men and women dedicated to protecting us and our country, no matter what service they join.
Dangggg...separated shoulder, five broken ribs, and a collapsed lung? My guy was just chilling in the helicopter. I would be freaking tf out, crying, etc.
Maybe he was originally... but then being lifted up by hoist & into the helicopter 🚁... going for a ride. I don't know if he could see out the windows at all from on the floor. But he might've been pulled from hurt to excitement & adrenaline rush. Some people enjoy the excitement of being hoisted & being in the air. I love being in the air. And I love rapelling & indoor rock climbing (haven't been able to experience any other type of rock climbing yet unfortunately). So for me I would go from hurt to enjoying the experience... back to hurt again. And reliving the ride & the hoisting in my head. I used to love spending my summers in the hanger right close to the runway the F-16s, F-18s and F-22s would take off & land. And the hanger right next to ours had a few of the jets kept inside. The pilots would come and talk to us a few times a week for a few hours each time. And they even took us & showed us & let us sit in the jets. Then we got to go flying in Cessna planes a few times as well. I used to have rolls and rolls of photos of the jets taking off, landing, up close, and whatever we were allowed to take photos of inside the cockpit areas. Ugggh I miss those days. What a blast. And heck we even met Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield & another female Astronaut that he was always with. He would train at that same base. And he would come and talk to us a couple times each summer. I don't remember the woman's name. But they were usually side by side & were the only red coveralls on base walking around.
Dedicated men and women who love their job and do an outstanding job. I wonder just what kind of person watches these amazing videos and then clicks the thumbs down? Perhaps Coast Guard washouts or anti-military parasites.
I love hearing the sound of the music. It makes me think of the movie Guardian with Kevin Costner as lead role as a rescue swimmer and instructor of the US Coast Guard out of Sitka, Alaska, and Aston Kuston being trained to be a rescue swimmer. This movie is one of my favorite movies, even though, the ending was sad; the movie gave so much light on how much the Coast Guard is needed and used, and the rigorous training and elements the individual has to go through to become a rescue swimmer, and all the dangers that the crew are put into. I am so glad that the Coast Guard was added as part of the military branch of service. The men and women were putting their lives in danger also and needed the same benefits. I had a burst appendix , when they stitched me back up they left a piece of appendix inside me . One year later i had more pain . It was an adhesion of the bowel , when they opened me up the second time there was a abscess the size of a mans fist , I had 10 inch of black bowel removed . All because they left infected bits of appendix inside me . At sixteen years old that has to be the worst pain i ever experienced nothing has topped that . now i am 45 , there has been no problems since , Thank God.
8:18 I was camping at enchanted rock when a starflight came around midnight, a couple days from a new moon, to pick someone up. I was within 60 yards of it and still couldn't see it. Shits impressive.
I’m 25 and just the other day I had a child ask if I was 12. From adults I often get asked if I’m 14-16. So as someone who gets this a lot, I can say he probably laughed it off as she was saying he looked 12 as in very young (and not literally like I get) and was glad to hear she was back home safe! Also fun side note, I live in one of the cities that borders Dana Point where that woman is from. It’s a beautiful coastal town and I often see coast guard helicopters from San Diego flying by, as well as other military aircraft from Camp Pendleton.
We flew to FL to pick up an RV, in '05. I was trying to sleep early one morning in PA. while hubby was showering, (Some KNOW what that's like in an RV) My hubby asked what the symptoms for appendicitis was. THAT woke me Up! It was his Gall Bladder. LOT of flooding in PA that year, no car, lost 4 Motor home tires between FL and Nebraska, I forgot to bring his shoes when I took the bus to pick him up at the Hospital, NO RV parking or even Close TO the Hosp., Took a taxi back to RV park. THAT TRIP had more CRAZY to it, but when she mentioned Gall Bladder...... ALWAYS PROTECT TIRES FROM SUN WHEN LEAVING A VEHICLE PARKED...

just remember outside the major towns they don't have running water so you have to pee and poo in a bucket of some sort and transport it somewhere to get rid of it and you have to live with other people doing the same. gross!
A family friend brought us a lot of Halibut from a fishing trip to Alaska (many years ago.) I'm not particularly a fish-fanatic, but this was an amazing thing. Like, Heaven!
Seems majority that I watched involve medivac for 60 years and older. Seems Alaska should have a law that at a certain age you need to live within 5 miles of decent medical care.
Speeking from personal experiance its low. Most people I have rescued are the professionals that are over confident In there abilities. People with less experiance tend to call it before anything gets serious. I'm no Alaskan I'm a bc boy just below alaska but it's my experiance.

No it's not you..lived in florida 4 years ago & most of the car accidents were caused by clueless uninformed out of state residents that think as long as they are spending their $$ on vacation they can do whatever they want!
That’s ok. Most of the money for these rescues come from the lower 48 states. Alaska is a net recipient of federal funds at like $4 dollars for every $1 dollar they pay in. At least Alaskans aren’t in your face as much as other red state moochers like Alabama, Kentucky and Mississippi.
I don't know about that... I've watched a ton of these and there's far more resident fisherman, isolated residents and surfers that are rescued it seems to me... but a lot of cruise ship travelers too. It is kind of amazing that the CG is basically an ambulance service for much of the state. They are all studs... wow the danger they are in every single day. I'm hooked on this series!
@@darwinawardcommittee lol you are pretty much 100% wrong there but good try….. 🙄 😬 the states who are “most dependent on federal money” it turns out are just the highest overall recipients of federal dollars because those are the states with the most military bases/employment, national government investments/departmentally related facilities/organizational employers of federal employees- New Mexico, for example, has four military bases and two national labs, and overall 22.5% of the NM workforce is employed by governmental entities. In Alaska, that figure is 25%.
As a longtime Alaskan, common saying is,”what you can get away with in the lower 48, will kill you in Alaska “! Simple! Think about that, those of you posting on this outside Alaska! Just saying how it is!😉😳
Probably because they got some care as they said on the side of the mountain and were able to rest a bit on the flight. Also, walking in a flat surface is very different than a steep Rocky Mountain.

The maps used to indicate locations the helos are dispatched to...the 3D effect employed makes it more difficult to understand them in the few seconds that the maps are on screen. Get rid of the 3D effect where you end up with white windmills and "shadow" black windmills. Ugh!
In Montana my SAR unit rescues exclusively silly city people who watch REIvideos, buy $4000 in gear, fromREI, andthink they have mastered the wild because they purchased th erecomended gear
Yup... Some search and rescue are starting to fine you if you were clearly unprepared and thus needed to waste resources and be saved when you could have easily properly prepared.

Why would the father and Daughter walk to far in one direction if they know they’re gonna be too tired to walk back the way they came from ? So basically they just got lazy and decided they didn’t wanna walk back so they get a helicopter flight out of there ?
I don't think so. The scenery is so beautiful there, I can understand people taking on more than they realize--until it's a bit too late. (Also, how many of us think we're in better shape than we actually are?) 🙃
Speaking from experience, the "what is over the hill there?" kicks in and before you know it you are in over your head! Throw in altitude, jet lag, and didn't pack enough snacks/water you will get your tail kicked! Lots of people overestimate their abilities too and that catches them out. Never needed professional rescue but not being prepared or aware of trail conditions can be your downfall.
I don’t think they realized how far they were going or what they were getting themselves in to. It can happen in hiking where you’re going the wrong way or you get lost or turned around and you just keep going until you can’t anymore.

The father-daughter lost on the Mtn speaks volumes for the need to have a PLB while hiking (such as the Garmin Inreach).
Rescue swimmer Cameron Cullen sounds exactly like the professional climber Cedar Wright, which is fitting since they're both badass.

Speaking from experience, the "what is over the hill there?" kicks in and before you know it you are in over your head! Throw in altitude, jet lag, and didn't pack enough snacks/water you will get your tail kicked! Lots of people overestimate their abilities too and that catches them out.
Never needed professional rescue but not being prepared or aware of trail conditions can be your downfall.
I don’t think they realized how far they were going or what they were getting themselves in to. It can happen in hiking where you’re going the wrong way or you get lost or turned around and you just keep going until you can’t anymore.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but having a c130 orbit when there is a sister vessel on scene is nuts. That over 10k per hour for that.
The C-130 crews need to maintain currency, and they might as well get hours during a real-world scenario.
