Apparently they are part of the "Explorer Search and Rescue" program which grew out of the boy scouts, so you are not far off! What a bad look. Young, inexperienced, out of shape, and unprepared. And to top if off they pushed on despite worsening conditions, and then required rescue themselves.
That search and “rescue” team seemed like a bunch of novices. The communication from that team was horrendous and their preparation was appalling. The USCG did an awesome job of getting everybody out alive and well.
Yes, I always say what's on my mind which gets me in trouble more times than I can count.🤣 but I would have to educate them on what they did wrong and how they can improve for the next rescue. The ground rescue team needed to get rescued, there is nothing wrong with that. At least they did have a backup to find the lost hikers. I wonder if people realize if that snow was that deep they would have succumbed to the cold if they did not get rescued. Luckily the guy with the broken leg had the gps to find the lost hikers. Ground rescue and CG should work as a team regardless if they needed help and they did. Kudos to both the ground rescue and the Coast Guard.
First rule of emergency services: Don't become apart of the problem... it happens sometimes but it sure looks like these dudes could have avoided it. Its unfortunate because it looks like a bunch of young kids with good intentions but it appeared they were quite unprepared and maybe lacked any leadership which put them in that situation. You have got to be prepared for an unexpected bivouac in that environment...
I disagree. As a backcountry skier, I know the snowy forest very well. You should know it’s going to be hard to hike through more than 8 inches of snow. You should know how to build a quinzee if you’re going to be out after dark. You should be prepared to stay overnight if you’re going to be out late enough for the sun to set. Not many people know that it is physically impossible to get below 32 degrees in a snow quinzee. The dude who had a bad leg, sure nobody can help an injury. But the fact the rest of the crew wanted out is detrimental to the hikers that are lost, not that they also weren’t prepared because clearly they weren’t if they got lost. It’s these people that ruin the backcountry for the rest of us. That’s why we say “know before you go” so for the love of God, KNOW BEFORE YOU GO. BE PREPARED. There’s a reason Boy Scouts know what they are doing. They follow those two things.

Anybody else suddenly find themselves searching for survival equipment on Amazon after watching this show? I just added a brand new wish list for said items, you know, just in case I get lost in downtown Milwaukee and need to start a fire or cut down some branches to rig a shelter or something.
They do an amazing job! About survival and cliff falls...one never knows. My son is a walking miracle! He went on a cross country Motorcycle trip with my son in law and his Father..not my hubby. They took my son on an advanced course and when their dust became difficult to see thru, he hit a boulder and flew off a cliff! He broke 7 trees with his back, got disengaged from the motorcycle which kept slamming into him and he managed to get himself free of it and stopped himself at 150 feet down. The Motorcycle took the entire 300 foot drop. My son in law thought he was dead! As he came back up the cliff on his own, he had a twig that lodged behind the nerve of his right wrist and a broken nose which wasn't caught at first. The first two Drs missed both issues somehow but the Alaskan Dr fixed him right up as within two weeks my son was in Alaska to go out Bristol Bay Salmon fishing after that fall and we told him to go in again. Never underestimate a miracle survival story...they HAPPEN.
Was surprised that the Coast Guard did the Adams rescue. Most of those are done by the Army around here. Yes I live relatively close. I can see Mt Rainier out my window.
Which they could have told the rescue swimmer when he first made contact with them on the ground. Not when the guy got in the helicopter himself. If they had a radio that would have help even more then they could tell the Coastguard as soon as they got it. Then when the hikers were safe and in the helicopter ask if they could also help them get out.
The search and rescue team was more just a bunch of teenagers who took it on themselves to try and do the rescue with no plan or preparation. As admirable as that is to try and save someone it was stupid cause they were not prepared at all and ended up putting the victims, the search team, and CG team at risk.
Wow what a bumb ass rescue team. How can you not be ready for the cold and snow. It's your job. You knew what you where hiking into. Please get them some more training.
Lol thats funny I didnt notice that. Good catch! I bet the camera crew did a zoom out shot and the editors thought a zoom in would fit better and just reversed the shot since there was no walking in the shot and no audio.
The mindset for this initial rescue team was we have 8 we need to rescue 2 so we need supplies to support 8 people for the search plus we are hoping to gain 2 resources (as in people) so realistically they should have been equipped with enough supplies for 14 people. Reason being is that your survivors are starving and dehydrated. So carry extra supplies to treat such a situation. On top of that you should also predict you will never be in the perfect extraction location as in you clear the snow and a perfect heli pad is secretly hidden beneath the snow.....so plan for an extract to a location that both the patients and rescue team are extractable. Also keep in mind contract local resources and let them know if your planning on sending out such a large team. This adds to their burden but lets them try and arrange this for any poor air crew who comes on shift at this shit show moment. Conclusion if you are gunna be the A team from the movies don't act like resources are at YOUR disposal. They are not and if what you set out for ends up becoming a rescue mission for you, you may have essentially sealed the fate for the vary souls you originally set out to save.
a little embarrassing , thats an understatement . i would consider that a disgrace and an humiliation, the rescue team that cant take care of themselves much yet victims
They had the location of the lost hikers but didn't say anything until the guy was in the helicopter himself. Not when the swimmer first met them and talked to them. I guess he gave up they location when he realized they were not all going to be rescued before the lost hikers. They need to work harder and learn alittle more before they become a problem themselves. Again or just stay home.
First of all, thanks for these videos. It takes me awhile to watch them because I hear or see something want to know more about and I go look it up. Anyway, at 38:42 LCDR McGown mentions that he relies on Flt Mech as his eyes side, underneath and behind. Could the aircraft be equipped with a camera or radar to help with that? I'm thinking that at times the Flt Mech gets very busy and his attention is divided.
What he’s referring to is the flt mech (we call them crew chiefs in the marines) is assisting the pilots situational awareness by looking for towers, other aircraft, obstacles, etc. He’s not just looking for things/people on the ground. Having that human element is crucial to safety of the flight in missions like this one. Attention gets divided in specific ways, there are procedures. However in some cases there are cameras that do help with the ground SAR but they aren’t helping guide the pilot in tight spots.
@@Hookechoandline good answer... the flight mech (and swimmer is aboard) are extra eyes for situational awareness. If the flight mech has to pay attention the aircraft there could be a new problem brewing... broken aircraft.

@@trex2092 thanks dude. I was wondering if it was some sort of marker. So similar to the ones the boat crews drop with the strobe and life ring I guess.
God love the Coast Guard, and bless its members. Perhaps the criticism directed to the members of the search party by other commenters here is deserved, and yet, circa 13:58, one of the USCG guys says, "I can only imagine what the rescue team's going through. They're cold, they're tired ..." Yes, they were ill prepared. (Perhaps that can be said for not a few people the USCG rescues.) Yet, still, the USCG had empathy for their situation. Well done! Semper paratus! (And yes, that motto is advice that everyone should take, but, sometimes, circumstances just get the best even of the best of us ...)
It sad to see people want to go hiking so deep it the mountains totally unprepared and no concern’s about safety. They should have room for a PLB, radio, phone and a marking device. All the time and resources the coast guard waste looking for these carefree thrill seekers. I still like a green laser. Shine that thing straight up in the air and you can see that beam for miles with the beam pointing to your exact location.
Well if the guy was hearing the other person of his balcony they ought to be by his house looking for them not out in the wilderness where is the guys home here? They should have started there and worked their way out form his balcony.
Sp basically the "rescue" team hindered the rescue. If the so called rescue team didnt need help the helo could have covered more ground and possibly rescued the intended targets.
People that do extreme sports and have to be rescued as a result should be sent a bill for the rescue. Mountain hiking is nice, but to be unprepared in a region where snowfall comes fast and furious is not too smart, also surfing in dangerous areas, rescued and being ready to go again, duh. The Coast Guard folks are risking THEIR lives after lots of training. Paying a fine for risky behavior might make people think twice about where and how they do their sport!
The guy with the broken leg does not look to me like he belongs on a rescue team. Correction: NONE of them should be on a rescue team. How to make a bad situation a lot worse.
What broken leg? I think he was just desperate to get off the mountain so he lied a little to the RS. Look at the manner with which he threw himself into the basket, you can tell he wasn’t really hurt. Broken legs hurt. A lot. (I’m not holding it against him. The chopper is where I’d want to be as well if I was out in those conditions... unprepared... With several other people... Equally unprepared...)
@@Holocaustica Agreed! No way it was broken and he refused an ambo when they asked. If it'd been legit broken, doubt they'd have given him an option anyways. To me, they looked like a bunch of teenagers. I was under the impression SAR teams were a little more experienced and I'd assume that'd need to be doubly so in conditions like the ones they were in. I, literally, know little to nothing about the mountains and I've never even seen snow, but if I was stuck somewhere and saw a group of kids was sent to rescue me, I mean, I'd certainly be grateful, but I'd still be thinking wtf, as well.
People who set out on hikes particularly rescuers ought to be mildly aware of what conditions are actually like and prepared, otherwise stay home on the back lawn. 😡
They are what they have for search and rescue? No wonder they didn’t make it. They just joined to say I’m part of the team. Hell one over weight and the others skinny and seems like no outdoor experience.
the rescue team in the beginning were a bunch of morons. They should not be part of a team rescuing people. They didn't even signal the helicopter if they needed help or not. X or Y
Sorry, i fully support the attempt that the "rescue team" was trying to do but they just added to the already critical situation for the search for the two lost hikers. I always say what's on my mind which gets me in trouble more times than I can count.🤣 but... I would have to educate them on what they did wrong and how they can improve for the next rescue. Nicely of course. It only make sense to me. I mean they are locals so they should know the weather can turn quickly and how to dress for a hike. Gloves, hat and some poles would be a good idea. Plus, thicker coats. Anything waterproof to go OVER some thermal pants if possible. Invest for next time. Layers, layers, layers. A Med kit is essential for ant hike and elastic bandages for "knee injurys". The guy looked pretty good getting out of the litter and then the helicopter. But most importantly a radio. They could have helped alot more if they had just radioed in that they had the hikers location as soon as they had found it and let the Coastguard do the rest. I mean they knew they had the location when the swimmer went down but didn't say anything until the guy got in the helicopter.

Imagine a large earthquake tsunami along the Jaun De Fuca fault. (Spelling?)
15:15 though.
Well if the guy was hearing the other person of his balcony they ought to be by his house looking for them not out in the wilderness where is the guys home here? They should have started there and worked their way out form his balcony.
Who the hell goes surfing when it’s 44 degrees outside ?
I’m thinking I liked the Kodak & Sitka rescues vs Washington State ignorants....so sad.
35:25 that guy is not 60. Theres no way
No, he said H-60 pilot, as in he's a pilot of the H-60 helicopters.
Sp basically the "rescue" team hindered the rescue. If the so called rescue team didnt need help the helo could have covered more ground and possibly rescued the intended targets.
They did rescue the intended target… the rescue team told them where they were located… they were a total mess though that’s for sure
Woah
Imagine stressing over a hour long hike up hill then the coast guard says you want a lift ?? Is snow white ??
what kind of search party was that? non professional im guessing , i hope someone didnt pay them money to get trapped and injured themselves
Ima bird
Quiet the difference between this coast guard station attitudes and the Alaska coast guard.
I can’t believe they surf in that area. That is absolutely nuts.
Kimi Khaos LOL....What would it say about my “dangerous situation” if I was successfully rescued by a bunch of kids? 🤦♂️
"rescue team" ????
WAS THE SEARCH PARTY 5 KIDS WTF?
I'll stick to places w happy names
People who set out on hikes particularly rescuers ought to be mildly aware of what conditions are actually like and prepared, otherwise stay home on the back lawn. 😡
They are what they have for search and rescue? No wonder they didn’t make it. They just joined to say I’m part of the team. Hell one over weight and the others skinny and seems like no outdoor experience.
That woman pilot is fine
send 'myself' down?..........".send me down".....
the rescue team in the beginning were a bunch of morons.
How to they still not have some kind of tech to see through smoke! I sent aliens eons ago to Earth.
Military do but i guess taking lives is more important then saving ones for the goverment.
The easy way logistically connect because temperature overwhelmingly smile throughout a festive playground. testy, flaky composition
