While being in the Astoria/Ilwaco area on my sailboat, I've listened in on Coast Guard rescues on VHF. After a successful rescue the airwaves come alive as locals give praise and thankfulness for our brave and heroic US Coast Guard. They are truly among our finest!!!
It’s always heartbreaking watching these shows when a person(s) don’t survive, while at the same time making it abundantly clear how important the Coast Guard is us all in the event anyone of us would need their help!
As a person who is a fairly new mariner to these same waters, massive respect to you all and your capabilities. I’ll do my best to learn and understand all the safety that I can so that I’ll hopefully never have to call you out.
Yeah, no doubt! I loved the Alaska ones for this reason and the beautiful scenery was also a huge plus. Then, the Florida ones because Air Station Clearwater is literally in my backyard and they seemed so laid back.. well, aside from the sketchy drug busts they do and also dealing with locals in Key West! Lol Now with Pacific NW, it's almost like Alaska, but turned up a few notches. Def have nothing but respect for these men and women! Really love this show in all its seasons.
That 36ft fishing boat sinking in seconds was an eye opener for me. You gotta be vigilant know when to hold them and fold em. Amazing he lived just wasn't his time to go.
I've watched the videos of Alaska and Florida, but was hoping to see our Coasties from Washington. I grew up on the Puget Sound and have had the experience of being in the ocean off our coast...it's Not something to take for granted. Even a gentle surf will take you out. MUCH RESPECT for our Coast Guard.
A great man once said, "It is hard to save them all, no matter what you say or do. Just know that they are where they need to be and love will see them through."
They keep going with heavy hearts long after hope is lost.... brave, compassionate, dedicated....while so many of us spend our lives keeping up with the Joneses, these people know what is important in life...life.
This Coast Guard crew rocks! Thank you so much for using your skills so effectively. While you train for this, it's different when it's a true rescue. God Bless each of you. The Captain was grateful too.
I`m from west Michigan, on the Lk. Mich. shoreline. Every year we get a landlubber that goes swimming when red flags are out. The big river is just as bad, every summer there`s an accident. Much Respect for the Coast Guard !
I highly recommend you stay at Cape D state park. I stayed at site 100 and it was magical. I walked on the north jetty. The thing moves and groans with each wave impact. Its absolutely awe inspiring.
I was lucky enough to have served there, not only at the station, but also got to attended the National Motor Lifeboat School. I waited as early as my sophomore year in high school to serve there. Well worth the wait.
I used to be a live-aboard on a 38-foot Pearson sailboat.it can be really scary out there. Thank God we never needed the Coast Guard I'm just glad they're there when they are needed.
I got caught in 20-25 ft seas this January in my 40 ft Sportfisher. We were taking on water faster than the bilge pumps could keep up with due to waves and sea spray getting through windows, etc. The forward cabin flooded above the floorboards and caused an electrical short in the bilge. All the windshield wipers broke and the VHF antenna broke off. The bar was restricted to vessels less than 26 ft but we made it to Astoria after departing Seattle five days prior.
I think they should have gotten him off the boat sooner. Saving lives is one thing but they shouldn't be risking a helicopter and crew to preserve a 35-foot boat.
I used to live in Western WA and I remember when going to the beaches they had signs warning about the rip tides, and signs either saying "Do Not Swim" or "Swim At Your Own Risk"
What a great video !!! I love all the Coast Guard rescues.Have watched everyone and now we have a whole new season out in the Pacific Northwest.Absolutely fantastic and kudos to the Coast Guard.Keep them coming!!!
I grew up swimming in the Great Lakes and joined the Navy. I felt pretty confident with my swimming. I was with two non swimmers and I swam a little ways out in the ocean. After I got back on shore I thought about how bad it was for me to swim out so far. If something were to happen to me who would save me?
These videos are close to home, our go to beach is Beards Hallow, which is right by Ilwaco. Makes me think twice about going to the beach, especially now that it’s winter and the winter currents are more dangerous. My kids 2-9 years old play in the water no matter the weather and temperature. I know, just be more cautious, but kids don’t always listen so accidents happen.
Swimmer Re Young Lady on Cliff: "I asked if she was OK, she seemed to be very upset." I bet she screamed in his ear the whole way to the beach! I know I would have!
Really hope some of these stories/rescues people recognized them and threw together a gofundme hopefully to get them another boat or a down payment towards another boat!
Would have been nice to get a little debrief from the Captain, figure out why he turned the boat in a tight circle when told to hold a straight bearing, ANY bearing, just keep it straight!
I'm curious, do we do anything with all the liter from the hundreds of vessels that have sunk? (Of course I don't mean in the moment or by the coast guard). Are there any companies or crews that go out and clean up the liter the next day or week or does it all just sink and we forever liter the ocean? Been watching these videos for last couple years and that thought just hit me now
Washington has a bunch of strange, depressing names for various places. Cape Disappointment, Deception Pass, Foulweather Bluff, Mount Terror, Mount Horrible, Mount Misery, Mount Forgotten, Mount Despair, Poison Lake, Useless Bay, Massacre Bay, Desolation Peak, Point No Point, Crying Lady Rock, Victim Island.. the list goes on. I'm not sure if it had more to do with the dreary weather in those parts or if people had just been traveling for so long before getting there that they were over it, but does seem strange that so many places there have such ominous names.
Don't forget the million dollar shitter called Dismal nitch👈 which is just past the Megler bridge on the right.. lot's of vessels have perished is why these names are what they are 👌
