  • Step-by-step how to guide on supercharging your 4-cyl Tacoma/4-Runner/T100/Hilux/Surf for both 2.4 and 2.7 engines (2RZ-FE & 3RZ-FE) This took me 2 days to complete but I was taking my time. There are some variations between the early engines and later engines so things like power steering might be different. I'm pretty active on here so if you have any questions (even 6 years after I post this video) write a comment and I'll answer.
    A good supporting modification would be the pink fuel injectors from later model Tacomas, the brown ones don't adapt well to the extra demand.
    This exact kit can be bought here:
    www.lceperformance.com/3RZ-2-...
    They do offer high boost kits and kits for v6 engines as well and their customer service is excellent!
    This isn't a payed video, just a video made by a happy customer!

    I did that for my '97 2rz eng. (2.4l) ... LC Engineering provided the Magnuson blower that came with the orig. TRD pkg. But later I ported the head & modified cam, etc. It threw all of the electronics off - both high & low boost. But LC Engineering still helped & with their advice I got the (electronic/timing/mix/etc.) problem fixed thru a specialist in Manchester CT. It was worth it - - - Oh, added a header, ditched the cat. & widened the exhaust & got - Really - 20% better gas mileage.

    If you want to get under the supercharger or the manifold to get to the fuel filter or that area. Take off your front driver tire and there’s two plastic flaps you pull those off and there you go. Easy access. It’s also the easiest way to do your fuel filter

    Thank you very much, your video really helped me out. I bought an LCE supercharger and had it laying around for a year before I felt confident enough to install it, after watching you do it. The bracket under the SC is a pain, and I had to bend the PAS tube like you, and extend the fourth injector wire on my RHD car, but apart from that it was a fairly easy bolt-on. It took me about two days. I'd like to buy you a beer, if you want to post a Paypal address temporarily.
    My car started up like yours, but I was surprised that there was no hesitation at all and it feels like I have more power already. We only have premium fuel in Hong Kong, and are at sea level, maybe those factors helped. I don't hear any supercharger whine though. I'll put a boost gauge on it soon.

    • @mister0ldschool
      @mister0ldschool  3 года назад +3

      I appreciate the offer but just buy yourself two beers next time ;)
      I've had to run mine on regular gas a few times just cause I couldn't find premium and it did not like it at all, knocking every time I gave it more that 50% throttle. On the other hand I've put some race gas in it and it loved it! I don't have the whine either and I think its down to just so much baffling in the intake system.

    Nice to see someone actually making a video on installing the charger. Looking into supercharging my 3rz as well. How has it been? Can you feel the difference and has the ECU accommodated yet?

    • @mister0ldschool
      @mister0ldschool  3 года назад +11

      The ECU has it sort of figured out. I'm about 20k miles in since I put the SC on (this video was filmed a couple years ago actually) and I didnt really gain any top end power, the mid range is where the big gains are and low end got some of the residual from the mid range if that makes sense. The lack of a significant low end gain could also be due to my long tube header (installed after this video) when I had the short tube on there the low end was more significant. I got this kit for highway comfort and if I ever have the bed loaded or I'm towing something it really helps out.

    • @joshv6351

      Nice. I thought about going turbo because of the price but upon doing more research I would say everything adds up about the same. I like that the supercharger is more bolt on than a turbo as it's more customized and required more fabrication. You ever plan on getting any more upgrades for the charger like a bigger fuel pump or piggy back/standalone? I see you swapped for pink injectors as well. I heard it's a must to have those injectors at the least when going forced inection.

    • @mister0ldschool
      @mister0ldschool  3 года назад +1

      @@joshv6351 I would like to go with a standalone but with the cost of those systems and what I want to get out of it I don't think it makes financial sense for me. The pink injectors helped out tremendously! I imagine they would be a fantastic upgrade just by themselves.

      @joshv6351 3 года назад +1

      @@mister0ldschool yeah standalones are always better but just the price point always makes you hesitate lol. Before you decided to put the charger in did you check your engine health like compression or do a leak down test to be safe?

      @@joshv6351 I sure didnt! But I would highly recommend anyone who is going to do such a big modification test everything first. do you have any update videos of the truck running? maybe some supercharger noises and boost gauge while its driving? i saw you have the scangauge as well, what was your average MPG before and what is it now? Awesome video thanks for posting. This makes me believe i could do a job like this with a few friends in a garage instead of needing to pay a shop and a tuner. I heard the low boost is most adaptable and safe- less pinging and stuff that i've read about the 8lbs system doing. have you had any pinging with this s/c? they say its usually low rpm and under load with boost. Also whats the purpose of keeping the EGR valve? emissions passing? Sorry for all the questions i have an 04 with the 2.4L 5 speed and i want it to have just a little boost, especially for crossing higher elevations and terrain.

    • @mister0ldschool
      @mister0ldschool  Год назад +3

      - No video unfortunately and because I'm still using the factory intake system I think its got so many baffles in it that it muffles the supercharger noises.
      - I forget before but I'm getting 14-17mpg now.
      - Pinging happened when I would fill up with regular gas (though as long as I kept it under 50% throttle it wouldn't ping) put in high octane and no pinging!
      - EGR for emissions.
      - The 4psi kit is good for a little extra power and its nice that you don't have to do any tuning for it.

      Id say if all youve done are oil changes this might be too much for you. The instructions are pretty good but it can be overwhelming too. I have bought a second hand vehicle and it has the same supercharger. But when accelerating it sounds very bad and I hardly feel the power.
    Is it easy to do maintenance? Will the supercharger be a part that lasts almost a lifetime? as they recommend me to service the supercharger to see if I gain more power. The only thing I have noticed is that the vehicle is very slow in acceleration

    • @mister0ldschool
      @mister0ldschool  3 года назад +1

      Its possible you may need some of the supporting mods like the later model pink injectors. Also check for vacuum leaks. The supercharger should last as long as the vehicle, it does need its oil changed periodically.
      Superchargers only do one thing and that is build pressure, its the job of your fuel and timing (controlled by the ECU) to adjust to the extra air to give you more power. So if your having issues you have to look into reasons why your ECU would not be compensating. Injectors that cant keep up with the demand or vacuum leaks could be factors.

    Great video. I have the 99 version of your truck. You notice any clutch slipping under power with a heavier load and could you safely put a smaller pulley on the super charger for a couple extra psi boost? And no other hidden costs? Parts or fabrication that wasn’t filmed?

    • @mister0ldschool
      @mister0ldschool  2 года назад

      No clutch slippage, I've towed a camper trailer a few times with no issues. Smaller pulley, I don't know. This is the low boost kit that the stock ECU can work with on its own, any more PSI and I imagine you'll have to get a tune for it to work right, or the 5th injector mod. Hidden costs are that your MPG will go down and superchargers have their own oil you have to change too. Also to get the most out of it get the pink fuel injectors that came on the later Tacoma's. They aren't necessary but they help.

      Runs good, the only issue I came across was a vacuum hose that's under the supercharger got all oily and slipped off. My guess is because I don't have an oil catch can some oil might pool in the bottom of the supercharger. fixed it by just putting on a tighter hose.
      Also I stripped one of the throttle body holes, since the supercharger is all aluminum and the throttle body bolts were steel, well I stripped a hole, going to have to Heli coil it.
      Drivability is fine, maintenance is fine, I should probably change the oil in the supercharger soon.
      Pros: Moar powa babeh!!!
      Cons: You need to find high octane fuel or else you will start knocking, sometimes when traveling I cant find the good stuff and have to baby it with regular gas until I fill up with the good stuff again. This is the biggest con.

I got it for the same reason your talking about, just more power climbing hills and this supercharger delivered! I can hang out in 5th alot longer and the really long hills that I used to have to shift into 3rd for I can hang out in 4th now and still have some extra power even with a load in the bed.

I lost about 2-3 MPG combined. Yes there is a difference, not super significant but its noticeable especially when your going up a hill.
