Wow as someone with EDS this type of portrayal is disgusting and actively harms people. I spent my childhood and early teens trying to push through and do things that were dangerous for me because of this kind of rhetoric coming from adults in my life (parents, teachers, scout leaders. etc.) Not only did it teach me that my pain doesn’t matter and I don’t deserve to rest but it also further damaged my body and I believe it sped up the progression of my condition (EDS is a condition that gets worse over time). Instead of teaching people that disabled people can just “be positive” or “not let their disabilities stop them” we need to be realistic and respect that some people have different needs than others. I’m still trying to learn how to stop thinking this way as it’s deeply ingrained in me but as I’ve started to respect my limits more, my quality of life has really improved! Ironically, the more I rest and take care of my body, the more I’m actually able to do with it!! Educating myself and the people around me has been crucial for this change and I’m extremely lucky and grateful to have so many understanding, caring people around me, but I worry portrayals like this will increase the ammount of well meaning but ignorant people. Especially when there’s so few portrayals of these disabilities in the first place.
Also I forgot to say I really appreciate you seeing what was wrong with it and calling it out!!! It makes me so so happy and gives me so much hope when I see people pointing out stuff like this!! :DDD

I have a chronic pain condition that makes it so I can’t work out like other people, and let me tell you, people *DO* constantly say things like “diet and exercise and cure you!” Or “you can do it, you just need to work out like _____” and then proceed to tell me something I’ve done it can’t do. It’s frustrating. This book is frustrating.
Same! I don't have Ehlers-Danlos and didn't want to comment on that but I have chronic pain condition as well and have spent so much time being told that exercise, diet, and sleep will fix my pain. And it felt like this book was going in that direction of if you just work out and work harder, it will fix your condition.

The disability the MC has is Ehler-Danlos Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects soft tissue collagen. There are a number of subtypes and even within subtypes it varies from person to person. But most people experience some degree of joint hypermobility, joint dislocation and chronic pain
I don't have eds but I have another type of hyper mobility and lossy goosy tendens and it surprised me that the mc is " so frail, pale, petite, and weak" yet all her injury are cause by like getting her arm pulled out of joint by someone. The more you dislocate the easier it is I constantly have to pop things back in place by simply running or sleeping and find it weird there's no random injuries
I tried reading it and what took me out was the dialogue and the premise. It could’ve been a conscription situation instead of the mom forcing, and like the government doesn’t see her disability as a reason for exemption so she has to join. Loved your video :)

While I’m not physically disabled, I am mentally and neurologically disabled and I too am sick and tired of the “push through the pain” rhetoric. I believe the name for that is “Inspirational Porn” and that sounds about right. I think the reason its so popular is seen by how people describe it. "Its reminiscent of the hunger games, divergent and eragon. The love interest is like acotar. Yada yada" but thats all it is. What struck me in particular was your point about some readers expecting books to deliver a gourmet experience rather than a fast food experience. This touched on how I feel about Fourth Wing and books like it; I'm reading for fun and entertainment rather than to have a literary experience akin to any text we deem canonical or worth studying. I find it important for myself to make this distinction when discussing books or recommending them so that the expectations are appropriate- so I just really enjoyed that you teased that idea out during your analysis.
Your analogy about gourmet food vs a little Caesar’s pizza was PERFECT. I really enjoyed this look at Fourth Wing! I haven’t read it yet, but I kinda want to. I group it in the same place I put “chick flick” or certain “action” movies. We can’t only have documentaries and “elevated” media. Solid review and thoughts. Felt like I got a casual writing lesson too.👌🏻
If you want a pretty cool dragon riding school book with a cool human/dragon dynamic, I recommend To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose. It came out earlier this year and I enjoyed it a lot, it has some wonderful commentary on colonialism, classism, and who should have access to power/education.
All of this 100%! I was intrigued by the book, then saw who the publisher was and the authors backlist and thought maybe it could be a fun 3 star maybe? And then went through the torture of actually reading it 🥴 truly jealous of the people that found it fun lol

This book came into my life at a perfect time. My Mom (86 yrs old) had a knee replacement. She was on the unit for 10 days and in the rehab unit for 12 days. Im the one whomalways has a book in my hand. Between multi trips up to the hospital and catching up on stuff at home while working part time, i didnt really want a book that needed alot of brain cells. It was easy to pick up and put down. And yes, i got sucked into the preorder for the sequel, because i have to know what happens next! My Mom is doing great now. Happy to be home. Now i am immersed into Brandon Sanderson series 😊

I've watched a few reviews on this book, but this is the first one I've seen after reading it myself 🤣 (I listened to it on audiobook as well). I ended up rating it 2.5 stars. I enjoyed enough pieces of it to not rate it below 2, but it was NOT well-written in many aspects and it didn't make me want to pick up the sequel.
when i first saw the book blowing up i thought it was a bit interesting, the thing that ultimately made me not want to read it was finding out the ml supposedly nicknames her 'violence.'

Book recommendation: Don Quixote. In this age of information and loneliness ( especially with the multiple year lock down). That the average modern citizen, spends a good majority of their day, every day deep in fiction. ( be it media outlets, that intentionally lie. YT personalities that do the same for views. Gaming. Movies. TV shows.) I think this should be called Generation Don Q. It’s genuinely amazing how this book written hundreds of years ago, is so applicable today. ( a man who spent all day, every day. Reading books inside. Lost his mind. And went out into the world.) It’s a fun book on its own, but conceptually is just an entertaining conversation to have.
I’m very very dumb. I’m absolutely dreadful at articulating/communicating my thoughts in a short, concise way. But I hope the general concept is being conveyed.
I think people turn off their brains when reading this book, I keep rolling my eyes. I swear I saw my brain back there. BTW Violet it's too similar to Daenyris from GOT, but Violet it's not a good character and it's horny af
I listened to the audiobook and the book was definitely ✨not good✨but really all I wanted was a longish, entertaining listen and this ended up being it. It was definitely super cringe inducing at certain parts and also every part of the book where Violet was faced with some dire situation, I knew she was going to overcome it just fine because she’s the MC and we still had so much book left (plus the rest of the series). I do wish she had to put in some effort, it felt like things were just given to her the entire book. It also felt like the disability rep was pretty bad and was her just white knuckling it throughout the entire book. This book definitely wasn’t a masterpiece and it had major flaws, but it kept me entertained and didn’t require many brain cells to follow the story, which is what I wanted when I read it. Plus the dragons were pretty cool. Edit to add: the whole “onyx eyes” type descriptions in the book absolutely killed me and felt like how my friends and I wrote stories in middle school 😂

Regarding the special tree she likes to climb; it's been 2 months since I've read it so don't take my opinion for 100% but as I recall she climbed the tree to get berries for her poisons? And not for leisure.. And that Xaden, having conspired with Brennan etc, directed the meeting there on purpose so she'd here about the revolutionary efforts, and even hid her with his shadow magic from the other ppl there
If it weren't for how juvenile the prose was, I probably would have seen this as bland and forgettable. Instead I felt like this woman was horribly insulting my intelligence and got unreasonably angry at the book.

To honest I enjoyed your review more than Rachels. I used to like her but recently I unfollowed her. Now I like a “mean“ bookreview if it points out actual flaws. Unfortunatelly I noticed a tendency to make fun of the autors wordchoices. To me those words are selfexplanatory and Rachel looks very petty. Or imho outright dumb. Like whats her problem with the word shoot/shot (sorry not a native speaker)? It's to modern? I'm sure Robin Hoods arrows levitated througt the air. This and afew other things realy turned me off from that particular reviewer. For Forth Wing, havent read it yet but it seems to be intended for a grown up readers who like new adult. So there is a chance I might like it. I'm cooling my heels till Julian Greystock finishes her in dept readalong.
If something a reviewer does or tends to do really turns you off from their videos that’s totally valid. You can follow or unfollow anyone you like. That said, Rachel and I are friends. So I am not the right person to talk to about you don’t like about the way she reviews things. Also while I don’t get caught up by word choice as much as Rachel does, I have made jokes over some choices in other reviews. So I also might not be the reviewer for you.

Edit to add: the whole “onyx eyes” type descriptions in the book absolutely killed me and felt like how my friends and I wrote stories in middle school 😂
i absolutely love and adore fourth wing, i have no problem loving bad books cause escapism, but i completely agree with what you've said lol great review!
My taste in movies is kinda trash so I get what you mean. I’m glad you love the book tho. Nowadays escapism is necessary nowadays.
Regarding the special tree she likes to climb; it's been 2 months since I've read it so don't take my opinion for 100% but as I recall she climbed the tree to get berries for her poisons? And not for leisure.. And that Xaden, having conspired with Brennan etc, directed the meeting there on purpose so she'd here about the revolutionary efforts, and even hid her with his shadow magic from the other ppl there
If it weren't for how juvenile the prose was, I probably would have seen this as bland and forgettable. Instead I felt like this woman was horribly insulting my intelligence and got unreasonably angry at the book.
I am so torn bc I hated it, and had a lot of the same issues that you mention but I also have FOMO and want to see what the sequel is like. Seems like from your review of the sequel that it doesn't really improve, though lol.

To honest I enjoyed your review more than Rachels. I used to like her but recently I unfollowed her. Now I like a “mean“ bookreview if it points out actual flaws. Unfortunatelly I noticed a tendency to make fun of the autors wordchoices. To me those words are selfexplanatory and Rachel looks very petty. Or imho outright dumb. Like whats her problem with the word shoot/shot (sorry not a native speaker)? It's to modern? I'm sure Robin Hoods arrows levitated througt the air. This and afew other things realy turned me off from that particular reviewer. For Forth Wing, havent read it yet but it seems to be intended for a grown up readers who like new adult. So there is a chance I might like it. I'm cooling my heels till Julian Greystock finishes her in dept readalong.
If something a reviewer does or tends to do really turns you off from their videos that’s totally valid. You can follow or unfollow anyone you like. That said, Rachel and I are friends. So I am not the right person to talk to about you don’t like about the way she reviews things. Also while I don’t get caught up by word choice as much as Rachel does, I have made jokes over some choices in other reviews. So I also might not be the reviewer for you.

I think the mum forcing her to be a rider suddenly will be explained in the next book - I think its been set up to reveal a lot about her mum, regarding her scribe dad's death etc
