I finally read the very hyped "romantasy" novel: Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, and it got me thinking about what makes a BookTok book so popular...

There were parts I really enjoyed, and I can absolutely understand the hype. But yeah, just a few too many issues that were not for me!

What a great video topic! Thank you for sharing. I found your channel when looking for Fall books to read. I have read Lonely Castle in the Mirror (love!) , and Shady Hollow & Anne of Green Gables are in my to-read pile. Thanks for the recommendations!

Great video! I don’t usually go for the hyped books, personally for this one I did get sucked in and did enjoy Fourth Wing and the second novel, Iron Flame, but there’s no doubt that it’s not particularly ‘well written’. I don’t want to use the term ‘trashy’ for the reading experience, but I also wouldn’t call it a classy novel 😅 I like that more people are reading and are enjoying the experience of sitting down with a book, however I do wish there was a bit more variation with the ‘BookTok made me buy it’ books, as they sort of all seem the same

Thank you Harriet! I agree with you because I definitely enjoyed reading the book, but I just don’t think I could cope with more of the romance between those two characters in a second book 😂 But BookTok has done so much good in getting people excited about reading who might not otherwise have gotten into reading, so I definitely don’t feel like these are “bad books” at all.

Received this for bday and am constantly compelled to read it by a family member. Now I'm just too curious to back out. Wish me luck.

I enjoyed reading it so definitely go for it! I was also too intrigued not to give it a go.

I had a similar experience reading Fourth Wing. It was a really enjoyable reading experience, the fast-paced nature, the predictability of the plot, and the nostalgia for the books of my teenage years (divergent, red queen, eragon etc.) made it really gripping despite all the problems! Thinking back on it however, I struggle to find anything about the book that I actually enjoy beyond how easy it was to read and the general premise of dragon riders and magical schools/training academies The disability rep left a lot to be desired in my opinion, especially the spicy scenes. As someone with one of the more mild forms and expressions of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome(likely what Violet had), even I got sympathy pains in my joints for Violet reading those spicy scenes! And yet a potential dislocation, subluxation, or even just discomfort weren't brought up at all in those scenes. I get that dislocations aren't exactly the s*xiest, but it is realistic for someone with hyper mobility disorder to get joint pain or dislocations during even less rough/energetic physical intimacy. Even just Violet telling Xaden to stop doing something because it is a bit hard on her joints or might be dangerous for her as someone with hyper mobility would have been enough.
Ultimately, it was a fun read despite the at times nonsensical world building, cringy dialogue and inner monologue, and predictable plot! It also got me out of a reading slump that I had been in for about 8 months due to a disability that has caused me to struggle with focus and most cognitive tasks, especially reading anything, but this book was clear, easy, and engaging enough for me to read and now I am getting back into it! I've read 12 books so far this month! So even though I have a lot lot lot of problems with the book I am also really thankful for what it gave back to me

I completely agree with the nostalgic feel this book had. It definitely had a divergent-type feel but for adults!
Your comments on the disability rep are really interesting, as I hadn’t really read the book through that lens, but can absolutely see the frustration you had with it. It did seem like it was only used in specific moments, and was then not really an issue throughout the rest of the story.
It sounds like we both felt very similarly about this book!
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts ✨

This book is coming out in my country in translation in two weeks and it now can be pre ordered. I was just thinking what to do for few days and don't know. I really don't like if there is to much swear words in a book, and I'm really not into dragons, so the only reason to buy this book is hype. What do you say? If I had to much on my tbr already, should I buy this one? If i don't, i have a felling i will be missing out of something...

I think overall I would say it’s worth the hype, even if I had lots of issues with it 😂 it’s a great fast-paced read and wouldn’t take much time away from the rest of your TBR. Just be prepared that there is a lot of swearing, and a lot of dragons! 🐉

I honestly hate BookTok books - I've tried a few and been bitterly disappointed every time. They're very addictive and I typically read them within only a few days, but they ultimately give zero satisfaction whatsoever , are really really cringe, and in the end feels like a complete waste of time.

Why are authors writing so cringe words and phrases that this author does? I really feel that publishers are failing to publish really well written works now, they publish novels full of prose that is so embarrassing and that makes you wince when you read the lines! I wish they would go back to well written, pleasing writing. I don't believe manuscripts are very well edited any more, so much of these manuscripts are far too long and require cutting back. They are published as are and really another 100-200 pages could be cut from them. Where are the editors? Edit! Edit! Edit! More drafts need to be written before publishing!!!

There were definitely a LOT of cringe moments in this book for me. I would always prefer a book that prioritises beautiful writing and slow build (of worlds, romance, characters etc.)
