I'm a car guy and I've probably built half a dozen motors for myself and help friends work on their cars. I want nothing to do with this set just because I like cars doesn't mean I want it in my Magic the Gathering world. I like those things to be separate, but that's just me.
I have to correct here. Of course it is shrinkflation if you firstly increase the price of booster packs and then secondly not put only 14 instead of 15 cards in a pack but also make booster boxes contain only 30 instead of 36 for the same price available. That‘s the best example of shrinkflation
I wish they kept the price between 110-130 USD. If they kept inflating this, people would just get 1 card and proxy it for all the decks in EDH. People have no issue letting others play with proxy. Especially if you say i have the real cards, i just want to keep them pristine or something like that.
The change from 36 packs to 30 is honestly good. And make the boxes more accessible. Which will help move boxes off the shelves. If you need the extra packs, just buy a bundle on the side. It's not that complicated.
The price of a play booster box is arbitrary anyway. They could have simply lowered the MSRP without lowering the amount of packs in the box. It is a little slimy, to be honest.
The price of a booster box is not arbitrary because it is determined by a combination of factors. These factors create a structured pricing mechanism, not an arbitrary one.
@@YourFriendsHouse_yfh Those 'factors' are whatever Wizards think they can get away with. If it wasn't they would charge 17% less for a box now they've reduced the box size by 17%. In reality they'll 'reduce' the price by 5% on a box. Wizards has plausible deniability "WE didn't raise prices because WE didn't change MSRP". But in reality Wizards are only charging distributors 5% less for a box, and retailers in turn only charge 5% less and that price increase gets passed to the consumer. And if you think they're done it's going to happen again by next January. We're going to be seeing 24 packs a box so they can 'reduce' prices back down to $100 a box. Just a scummy way to increase revenue without putting in the effort to deliver a better product.
Spoken like someone who doesn't understand economics. Lowering the price while keeping the same number of packs would have caused them to print more to keep up with demand as more people would be willing to buy the boxes. This creates more cards going into the market which will then crash the singles market and cause a card inflation of sorts. This would make commons, and even some uncommons as worthless as a penny per card. Who would then want to buy a pack that has 13 cards in it that are a penny a piece, in hopes to find a rare or mythic that might be worth a couple of bucks? You would literally crash your own market because some people think you are "being a little slimy." Just because a company has to make money in order to stay in business, doesn't mean they are trying to fuck you or any other of their customers over. They just have smarter people that work for them who know what they are doing. Reducing the number of packs to reduce the price is a masterstroke by WotC
This is so weird to me that reducing the number of packs in a box (while keeping the same price per pack) is seen negatively. What if we do the opposite, and go to 40 or 50 booster packs per box, would WotC be seen as the opposite as well as in "not greedy" or "an upstanding company"? No, I think the reaction to them going to 40-50 booster packs per box would literally be the same reaction as reducing it, as in people would say "they are MAKING us by more booster packs in a box while jacking up the price, stupid greedy WotC!" I think what it all boils down to is people don't like change
When Wizards started play boosters. I said at that time they should have done 30 or even 24 pack box. Dropping the price of a box down. Glad to see they are doing this. They should have done it day one.
They didn't drop the price of the box down. This is all a scam to raise the price of a box. They reduced the box down by 17% but will charge you 5% less per box. Next they will reduce the box down to 24 packs and charge you another 5% less. At the end they'll be charging you $100 for 24 packs when a year ago it was $100 for 36 packs of draft. Stop being played by this obvious marketing strategy.
Unfortunately, it did not cost less. It's still fckin the same. 36 pack/box is sold between PHP 9,500-10,000 in the Philippines. Now, it's still being sold at that same ridiculous amount, but 6 packs less. WTF! I was expecting it to be sold around PHP8,200-8,700. Good thing i know someone who gives an ultra huge discount on pre-order. Got a box for PHP7,200.
They should probably come out with a 36 pack box with the next set, they could keep the cheaper 30 pack play booster box and they could call the 36 pack box, wait for it...... a Booster Box 🤣
Makes no difference to me. 30 packs, 36 packs, if the per-pack price doesn't change, then the economics don't change for me. The issue for me is that the play boosters themselves are so weak that they feel like opening old draft boosters at set booster prices. I'm at the point where I will only buy collector boxes or pre-cons, if I buy retail product at all.
The pack price did change. The MSRP of a single pack didn't change. But they're going to charge you the exact same amount for a box of 30 as they did for a box of 36. They just did it in a sneaky way so you wouldn't notice.
Thanks for pointing out how there is a positive perspective we can take here that doesn't include shrinkflation when it comes to those 30 pack boosters. I do fear that they're going to totally turn up the heat on us though in the coming sets, slow boil.
Of course it is shrinkflation if you sell the same product (displays) with less boosters for the same price as the predecessor product. They only renamed it to play booster so people think it is a different product. But it serves the same purpose

Agreed. This is essentially what I said I would have done given the other changes this year.

I can’t wait to have a Ford F150 as my next commander
I hope the pull rate is higher now that it’s less packs….

It’s a step in the right direction for sure - would be nice to have them come down on prices overall too!

@@HometownTcg 5.49 a pack is MSRP. Rather reasonable over all. Certainly in the current age where the cost of eggs has doubled.
Instead of two cases to play a league night you have to buy three.
A new baldurs gate situation? Lesser booster is lesser pull rate.... right?
And it’s draft boosters not set boosters… for 30 packs
This will not be the last change.
I’m still really excited about it. However seeing what’s going with the Pokemon community makes me more cautious.
I feel like this issue could be slightly mitigated by having the comprise of all variants available in play boosters.
Possibly. There are less variants in the play box than there used to be in set I believe at least

Play booster boxes are selling for $125. You know, how much MKM boxes cost. Except it's the equivalent of 145 for 36 packs.
