But Leone said the more he thought about it, the more he thought it would work for Van Cleef to transition into this part. Eastwood came up with the name Angel Eyes.

I was only 14 the first time I watched The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, had a nightmare the same night where I dreamt that Angel Eyes did this to me. Woke up to my face and body all soaked with sweats. Man, Angel Eyes is such a memorable villain.
You know what I like about this movie? No one is completely good or bad. The "good" is just better (sometimes and in some things) than the 2 others but he's still greedy and ready to break any deal just to benefit himself, the "ugly" is a flawed type but the most sympathetic of the group because of the traumas of his past as we learn from the conversation with his brother and his more humorous attitude coming mostly from his stupidity (especially compared to the 2 others), so we can identify more with him because he's a comic relief and we all are "ugly" in some way and the "bad" is indeed the worse of the 3 because he's so self centered but is also a traumatized isolated person, so it makes sense he can't create any real close ralationships and only trusts himself, but he mostly kills other killers or greedy rich men and showed sympathy for the injured soldiers in the ruined fortress!

The title is somewhat ironic. "The Good" has no moral compass whatsoever and is as ready to kill, betray, deceive or trick as anyone as long as it is for his own benefit. He gave Tuco a chance in the desert instead of killing him outright, yes, but it was a slim chance and he probably did it out of some kind of superstition, not for Tuco's sake. However, he is smart and, contrary to the rest of the cutthroats, he is capable of some compassion.

Watch the Iceman Tapes (diagnosis) .The actual videotaped concersations with hit man killer Richard Kuklinski. Angel Eyes was fiction. Kuklinski was real. He and i likely crossed paths when i was a teenager and he was in his 40s . completely stone cold killer.

The victim did nicely as well (completely, and rightly terrified of the guy he has hired to kill a former army comrade), not to mention the trademark Leone facial close-ups.

So he took the money and chose to interpret it as payment to return the favor to the man whom paid to have him killed.
Exactly. He needed to kill his employer either way as he was interested in the treasure for himself. So I guess without the money from the family father he would have still killed his employer to tie up the loose ends.

This guy scared me so much as a kid... Then I saw For a few dollars more and I was like "Damn, Lee Van Cleef can be a good guy too". Angel's eye (in France he's called Sentenza... *Translators*) is my favourite western vilain. That laugh after he shots that old man is pure gold.
Pay attention to the end of the scene were you see the gun smoke wafting out of the pillow. The music is actually in time with the movement of the smoke. Brilliant imagery and music combination.

This guy scared me so much as a kid... Then I saw For a few dollars more and I was like "Damn, Lee Van Cleef can be a good guy too". Angel's eye (in France he's called Sentenza... *Translators*) is my favourite western vilain. That laugh after he shots that old man is pure gold.

Pay attention to the end of the scene were you see the gun smoke wafting out of the pillow. The music is actually in time with the movement of the smoke. Brilliant imagery and music combination.

When I first saw this film I couldn't tell if Lee Van Cleef was the Bad or the Ugly. Either way, the guy is awesome.

I didn't feel bad for the greedy old man. He looked like he was barely clinging to life and paid an assassin to go murder a family so he could cling greedily to that cash box. Even near death, and some people still try to screw over people for gold.
