Most times people ignore it, but this song really shows off Elton's band and what they can do. These are the same guys as back in Elton's heyday in the 1970s...Nigel Olsson drums/vocals, Dee Murray bass/vocals and Davey Johnstone guitars/vocals.

Elton John also sang a Gershwin song, "But Not For Me" that was used in the movie "Four Weddings and a Funeral" in around 1994 and I didn't realize it was him singing it at first. It's on the soundtrack for that film. And he sings it really well. He's very versatile as a singer.

I always thought that Elton John had an "everyman" voice, not extraordinary or dynamic in any particular way, but very good. Then I heard George Michael, whose voice I did consider extraordinary and dynamic, invite Sir Elton onstage for a duet of Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, and the older man's voice made the younger man's sound flat and tinny by comparison. Elton John's voice is really brilliant, and as you expertly point out, his brilliance is in his technique and his mastery, not the flash.

    • @edh8827
      @edh8827 3 месяца назад +2

George Michael "fiat & tinny"! I've always thought that he gave a wonderful performance for this. An amazing start, teasing build up & totally honours a great song - & then joined by his dear friend Elton. A wonderful moment & meeting of mutual music genius!

@@edh8827 Like I said, I also always thought George Michael had a great voice. I considered him to be the presumptive heir to Freddie Mercury in Queen, but I don't think their voices complement each other, and rather than harmonizing I think Elton shows the weaknesses in that George Michael performance.

This popped up on my feed a week ago, and I literally. have been waiting a week to watch this. This might be my favorite Elton John song. He was slightly older than me in his releases, even his Princess Diana version of "Candle in the Wind". This song resonated with me and I still really don't know why. I love your analysis. You're always spot on with technique and technicality. I don't know how this song would hit today, even knowing Elton's past. That's not for me to decide. Just as a song this is brilliant.

I took the ?more than I love, life itself" in a totally different way. My feeling was that he was talking about the idea that you would lay down your life to save your loved one, which is not disingenuous or any kind of disservice to your spirit. Quite the contrary, actually. When someone does that for someone else that they DON'T know, like the guy that jumped into the freezing water when that jet crashed, and kept handing off the life ring thrown to those around him, until he drowned, or the guy on the Kyiv bridge that set off the explosive to drop the bridge when they were out of time, knowing he wouldn't survive it, to stop the Russian invaders entering Kyiv, heroes. I think he wrote a good line, and just missed the real meaning himself.
I didn't remember that Stevie Wonder had played the harmonica. He makes some really great jazz now, and I've seen him utilize it there. He is VERY good at it, top tier world class

As a untrained, self conscious singer with limited range, I find this such a fun chorus to sing along to with confidence. The words are fun to say, the rise and fall of the notes are fun to do, and the open tones make me feel like I can actually sing. After this video I will now smile when I put that often unrecognized note in the final "ca-a-all it the blues."

Despite Elton's clear and prodigious success, I still think he has one of the most underrated voices of all time. I remember in Season 2 of American Idol, the contestants were tasked with performing an Elton John song and, to a person, not one of them could do it successfully, I mean not even close. At that point, I realized how unique Elton's voice was and how much I loved it. Much later, there was a Tribute show to Elton and Bernie Taupin where professional singers took on the same task and they all did their own great renditions of the songs, with maybe one or two exceptions where I didn't cotton to their version; however, it was clear that each idolized Elton John and gave it all of their talent to do the songs justice. Elton John is one of my top 3 male singers all-time with the others being Don Henley and Smokey Robinson. Pretty good company, if you ask me. 🙂

This song "I Guess That's Why The Call It The Blues" is from the early 1980s. His earlier 1970s songs were from his albums "Elton John" - "Your Song" - top 10 hit. "Rocket Man" "Honky Cat" " Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" was from album "Honky Chateau" "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player" had his first #1 hit "Crocodile Rock" and #2 "Daniel" and his later albums were "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (Bennie and the Jets #1) "Caribou" song "Don't let the sun go down on Me" "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" song - Someone Saved My Life Tonight and he also put out "Tumbleweed Connection" which had no singles put out. He also had a soundtrack album called "Friends" which was for a Paramount movie in 1970. When Elton and Bernie were getting famous that album was released to make money for Paramount. He also had a #1 hit with a Beatles cover song - "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" which John Lennon actually sang part of and played guitar and was credited as Dr. Winston O'Boogie.

Great vocals on the "Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player" album. "High Flying Bird", "Blues For Baby and Me" and "Skyline Pigeon". This is not his most impressive vocal by far. He has made many changes in his technique as his voice has gotten lower and lower. Vocal surgery a number of years ago. His range isn't what it once was, but amazingly, he has made changes to the way he sings, and in some ways it is actually Better than it was ten or fifteen years ago. Early to Mid Seventies was some of his best when he had a great higher register. Lost it in the Eighties, and developed a rich lower and mid range in the Nineties. Evolution!

More songs with Magnum: Shoot, On Christmas Day, Don't Wake The Lion, Only A Memory, Start Talking Love. The singer over all the years have been Bob Catley. But after the 2014 album they released his voice was in bad shape. To much cigarettes and alkohol, sadly. BUT He have been the only singer in the band from 1972 till 2023. The band now is put to rest now when the guitarist and songwriter Tony Clarkin died earlier this year. Both of them was in the band from start to the bitter end. Hope you kan react to someone of their great songs

It should be noted that Elton John didn't write a single lyric in his career. The Lyracist was Bernie Taupin.

She spoke of Bernie Taupin in the video. Elton also had a few other lyricists but Bernie is the best librettist by far. It's pretty amazing that Elton is able to compose a song around someone else's words.

Given your reactions to this song and Toto's Rosanna, I think you may have been born 15-20 years late. Yo seem to have a real affinity for early '80s pop.

Probably my favorite Elton John song.
I think an analysis of his song, "I Want Love," would be interesting.

I prefere the ancient voice of Elton John before his surgery, this song was cool yet not my favorite (it is "Tonight").
If you want, you can do a critic voice on the beautiful song "Chloe", or "Nobody wins". ;-)

I might have to book a singing lesson. I am an ex pro Superbike racer, and automotive tech. As a result I sing a lot. I would give my left nut to sing a duet with you, like Crying by Roy and Kd Lang.

Avoid cliches, but lyric writing is poetry and there is no right and wrong. That said there are cringey things I would never put into my songs.

With 56 million views in the last few months suggestion to look at 15 year old singer Emma Kok doing the song "Voila" with André Rieu at the Vrijthof square in Maastricht for 12.500 people. Emma Kok is a child prodigy picked by André Rieu to go on worldtour with him. Emma Kok has stomach paralysis also called gastroparese. She is on feeding tubes 22 hours a day. She is only off the feeding tubes when she performs with André Rieu then she feels free. Her mother is always backstage to connect her back to the feeding tubes. She stopped going to regular school to go on worldtour with André Rieu, she now does worldschool. I believe they do 100 concerts a year so Emma Kok is travelling the world with Andre Rieu having the time of her life singing the French song "Voila". A song that came in second at the Eurovision contest. Emma cant speak French, she learned the meaning of the song and also learned to sing the song Voila phonetically. André Rieu talks about Emma Kok in the intro in Dutch and English, Emma winning the Voice Kids and her foundation she setup for gastroparese aka stomach paralysis .I have seen other reactors and vocal coaches skip this intro André did of Emma and people didnt like it. Every comment with other reactors and vocal coaches was why did you skip the intro of Emma. P.s. Some call Emma Kok a young Lara Fabian

Did you just do a voiceover for greenerenerygroup adverts?
It was better than Elton John too, though that’s just my opinion obviously.

yeah the dying for soneione not the best in lyrics.. Although I like both of these songs...
ones a promise the other a broken promise I guess.. lol
    Bryan Adams- Everything I do
"Yeah, I would fight for you
    I'd lie for you
    Walk the wire for you
    Yeah, I'd die for you"
    Alanis Morrisette- Yiu iougta know
"Does she know how you told me
You'd hold me until you died? 'Til you died
    But you're still alive"
Not the best thing to promise anyone.. better to focus on growing old together.

I bet Elton don't give a sh*t about when he uses different tech singing. He just do what feels right. I find this to be ridiculous.

You are right. Singers at a high level aren't thinking about all this while performing. However Elton is such a musical technician that I am sure he has thought about at least some of it before. This isn't video isn't for Elton though, it's for people who want to learn the joys of singing. Zooming in on moments allows us a greater understanding before we zoom out again and sing with freedom! :)

@@BethRoars He absolutely does think about what he's singing if you watch a tape of him from 1971 composing "Tiny Dancer" from a piece of paper with some lyrics on it that Bernie wrote from the "Aquarius" documentary. the link is below (hopefully).
