    I'm a Japanese fan. I really love this film's gothic mood. I used to imagine that Polanski would have direct Edgar Poe movie with Johny Depp !

    1:31 An excellent point! Corso somehow manages to become more evil and also more likeable as the story progresses.

      Well the movie is about Corso journey in realizing that he is actually Lucifer or at least a son of Lucifer.

      @@Taras2071 Yes it is. Maybe watch it and pay attention. Every single thing that happens in the predictions revolves around him. The last part gives it away, when the guy does the ritual, who comes? who arrives? Corso does. At at the end the last page, the proper last prediction is him walking into a glowing castle, just like Corso does.

    I remember when I was seeing it in the threatre in 1999, it was one strangest but charming movie I ever saw.

      @kellyjbarnett yes, he was. The scene that proves it is when he tells Corso that unless he reobtains his copy (Balkan´s) he will do the same he didi to all the victims (the other bookeepers)

      @@recinese I don't know that actor but it wouldn't surprise me cause there are many other actors who were possessed to perform. And some of them actually said it. People like Robin Williams, Johnny Depp, Denzel Washington, and others. It's not like just acting in some cases people around them seen them different, like in the case of Jim carrey in the movie Man on the moon.

      ​@@moranMBit's not actually possession. I've had a similar feeling while singing and acting and when you get deep and passionate in the role it's bound to happen. Everything in that moment feels effortless as if you're not actually doing it
      Also when doing impressions for a long time, it's hard to stop and not think like the people you're imitating. It's just human psychology

    @cthuluforever - Answered my own question... in case you want to know, that song that's playing around the 1:30 mark is an instrumental version of "Home" by Sevendust. Took me a while to figure out who that was without the vocals.

    The antiquarian Geert Poetter recommended this film to me in 1999. I saw it in the cinema at the time. The film marks a tipping point at the end of the Gutenberg galaxy: back then, in 1999, books still played a prominent role and there were no cell phones.....

    reminded me of angel heart
    corso and johnny angel similar in that they were doing things (murder) they werent aware of
    young micky rourke and johnny depp had same talent to play the run down but intellectual
    cynic who has sold their soul to the next client (dollar) then morphs into an adept
    they dont make em like that anymore ie movies with multi layers such as kubricks eyes wide shut

    Brilliant movie.. You won't understand it the first time you watch it (unless you are a genius). But its well worth reading about it online because once it all becomes clear it is like there is a whole other story hidden beneath the surface. Me, I didnt think she was the devil. I think she is working for the devil. A demon or maybe the whore of babylon. I was kind of blind to how horrible corso was the first time i watched it because you wanted to be on his side. His greed and lack of care for anybody but himself enable him to pass through the 9 gates.

      AG 031 in the original novel - The Club Dumas I think, the name wasn’t Balkan. I wonder why Polanski changed it

    the last time Roman Polanski made an occult movie RoseMary's baby {1968} look what evil happened to him within a year in august of 1969 his wife Sharon Tate and her friends were brutaly slaughtered by "The Manson Family" so if your still alive Roman if the devil hasn't consumed your pathetic soul learn to make better choices.....
