This is the camera I'm currently using. It fits my needs for now and it's my first one. I'll be using this until I save up enough money or ever have the need to get a better camera.
It is still a nice camera that produces great and unique results. :-) I am sure you've already produced some very nice results with it as well as will continue to produce some great results with it. These cameras can really last for a long time and as long as you know what you're doing, they will still continue to deliver great results even for today's standards. :-) Thank you very much for watching as well as for sharing your story, very much appreciated it. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
I have this camera and I am just starting to take pictures!! I have taken some pictures of the woods and I want to start taking some pictures of the city and buildings and stuff. Thank you for the videos!!!!
Thank you for this video! I still have mine from 2007 and this video has made me appreciate it all over again. I'm going to get a new battery and take it out on my adventures. I don't have any budget to purchase any of the newer cameras that are around these days and for a while, I felt bad about that. I've now realised that I have everything I need to go out and have fun with the camera I already have. Much appreciated :)
I have that camera, I'm just started to learn photografy in it, and I confirm how joyfull is this camera, and I loved how you spoke about every point in this camer, that's definately a like and subscrition.
Wow, I am glad to hear that you are starting out in photography, I am sure you'll produce some great results! :-) Yeah, this camera despite it's age, is a very joyful camera to use and to a certain extent, it still can teach the users a little more as well. I thank you very much for watching and also for sharing you story, very much appreciated it. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
Wow, thanks so much for watching and also for sharing your story, very much appreciated it. Also thank you for the compliment, will definitely try to improve my future contents. :-) The 6D is also still a great camera that delivers great results. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
I got mine years ago. Then went M4/3 as I wanted video option. I forgot I had it. While cleaning yesterday, I came across it. I slapped a lens on, charged the battery, and it worked perfectly. Looking forward to taking it out.
I just ordered the 400d with a Tamron 17-50 2.8. I am super excited to take photos. Hope it is a nice combination. Coming from Sony Alpha 6xxx this may be a heart issue:)
If you own a 400D, then it's worth looking into 400PLUS, which is a firmware hack that adds additional features to the camera. I have only just installed it (after owning the camera for years), and I intend on using it for timelapses.
I think that if it has the features that you need, then go ahead and install it since you can always go back to the older menu settings anyway, so there ins't really any to lose. It will also save you some money on buying additional accessories like an intervalometer remote if you are into taking time-lapse pictures. Hope that helps. I thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
Wow, thank you very much for watching and also for the compliment! Really appreciated and also made my day! :-) I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
Here in the USA it is the Rebel XTI. It was my first DSLR. It really is a good camera to learn photography. I have a Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8 lens for it. Now I have a SL2 (200d) and an EOS-M mirrorless with many lenses.
Yeah, the XTI is indeed a nice camera to learn photography on and it will still deliver great results even today when used properly. :-) Thank you very much for watching and also for sharing your experience and stories, very much appreciated it. :-) I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
Wow, thank you very much for kind words and also for watching, really means a lot! I will for sure keep improving my future contents. I wish you you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
I am also attracted in second hand entry level cameras though I own already two of them. You find really cheap prices , on french ebay those cameras cost at least three times more .
Yeah, old second hand entry level cameras are still great and they are still more than capable of delivering amazing results even more today's standards. :-) I think I am fortunate being in the EU that I can find cheap prices easily. So if certain things are too expensive in my countries (Netherlands and Germany), I can always look else where (assuming the shipping cost will be justifiable). That being said, it's also my hobby to always keep looking at all the second hand websites and visit second stores to see if there are any good offers. That being said, I won't make a video if the camera price was found by luck because that would not be fair... For example, the 400d here in German is a bit higher in prices if you go for the "by it now" option on eBay (such as 70-80 euros plus kit lenses and other accessories). However, if you have patience to wait for the bidding time to be over, the 400d with kit lenses and other accessories are usually just around 40-50 euros. As I also mentioned in the video that before I got my 400d, I was also trying to bid for the previous offer which had a 50mm 1.8 included in the bundle and that offer ended at around 50 euros as well. I missed it because I was traveling home and wasn't available to bid on it... So in this case, I would still count that getting the 400d for around 50 euros is doable. :-) Thank you for watching a lot of my videos and also for commenting again, really means a lot! :-) I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
I have many more modern and advanced cameras and but not many are as fun as tmy plastic fantastic 450d , which was my first dslr. Very responsive, nice controls, easy to use, good colors and easy to edit -raws. I took some really special moments with it, so I am emotionally attached to this camera. Every time I use he 450d it brings me back to the good old times, when photography was not so much driven by perfectionism and hight tech, but more by emotions & creativity.
Yeah, the 450D is indeed still a nice camera that still produces great results. The colours are also unique on that camera. The simplicity of camera really allows you to focus more on the taking pictures rather than the technical side of things thus coming back with more stories/creative results/moments, etc. Thank you very much for watching and also for sharing your story and experience, really appreciated it. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
You right about that. It looks nowadays you have to buy a new camera to make good pictures . I make pictures still with old cameras because I love the pure colors they produces .
Loved it! Just found my 400D back in the storage and it still looks and feel great. I may try and bring it out with me to take some pictures this weekend. Really like the feel and the nostalgia that comes with it. It was my first camera when I started learning photography at uni. Thank you for the comprehensive review!
Great video! I have this camera but have no experience of using it in manual mode. Do you have any tips for settings to capture the northern lights with it? Thanks
Since it also really depends on the condition that you’ll be photographing, I can only give a general setting that I would use which is to use a tripod, set your shutter to be between a second to a couple of seconds long since you probably don’t want the light to be a blurry mess. Then set the aperture down a little bit and adjust the ISO according to the metre. Hope that helps. :-) I thank you very much again for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
Obviously its not the greatest camera because its not a newer one but the photos still look really good for its time. And for someoje just getting into photography i think i will pick one up while i wait to save up for a newer version
Hi David. Great video. I want to ask, what is it about this camera's performance at ISO100 that you think is not as good as at ISO200 (you mentioned you regard the sweet spot as ISO200-400)? Thanks
Great review! I'm interested in the filmic characteristics of these older cameras. Which Canon's apart from the 400d do you think have that look? I care less about features and more about unique sensors. Everything modern is just so clinical. Cheers
I would say the Canon eos 350d and the 5d classic would be my personal pick. They both have very special place in my heart for delivering unique vintage look from a digital sensor from Canon side. But that is just based on my personal preference and opinion... Yeah, I understand what you mean. :-) Hope that helps and thank you so much for watching and also for commenting, really appreciated it. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
i bought a 400D a few months ago, i mostly take it for hikes and vacations because my Phones camera/memory is crap, it's a very good camera for just hobby photos, just for fun, i got the camera with the 18-55 lense and a UV lense for like a £100 and i got a 75-300 lense for a £110(both refurbished), they're like keypart of my walks and hikes now
The 5d Classic is also another great DSLR that I would recommend actually. It has beautiful colour science, colour depth and the roll outs are very natural. Using the camera is also quite nice actually. But it's also a completely different level of a camera compare to the 400d. The 400d is more of a beginner's DSLR and you can find it for around 50 euros with kit lenses nowadays. The sensor size is also different and it's just for a different photography application in general. There is not doubt that the 5d classic will behave better in low light, gives you more dynamic range and natural looking colours. But the 400d has the crop sensor (which is good when you want to find good budget lenses that aren't big), sensor cleaning system as well and also a much smaller form factor so it nicer to carry around. I guess it really depends on the priorities as well on which kind of priorities you've set for your equipment to determine which is right for you. :-) That being said, I am planning to make a video about the 5d classic later in the year.. Just right now I have some videos about other cameras waiting in my editing software first as well as some photoshoot videos... Once those are done, I will make a video on the 5d classic for sure. :-) Thanks so much for watching, really appreciated it. :-) I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
If you use a cable, you will need a mini USB cable as well as the Canon Utility software installed on your Mac. Then you'd have to connect the cable to both the computer and the camera then switch the camera on. Usually the software will recognise the camera right away but if it takes time, then maybe it's best to just go ahead and open the software. From then, you can just download the images. With the card Reader, you will need a CF card reader and it's easy as taking the card out of the camera and plugging it into the card reader and your Mac should recognise the card. :-) Hope that helps, thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
I wanna upgrade from the XTi, but I can't figure out a good option. I wanna stay sub $500 CAD . I've been eyeing the SL2, or the older x0D, or a 5D mkii ... I do a lil of everything when it comes to what lane I'm in like street - landscape. Leaving canon just ain't an option either as I don't have the funds to just change ecosystem...what would you do?
If it's not too late, I'd say if you have the lens for it, then go with the 5d mark ii. That camera can produce really unique looking results that you just can't get with the crop sensor cameras. Sure, it's old and the feature sets aren't really compelling but for the quality of the camera images that the camera still delivers, I think that it's really worth it and once you get used to it's limitations, it's not hard to work around it. :-) Otherwise, around 500 dollars would also get you the canon 70d, which is another capable camera for everything. :-) Hope that helps a little, I thank you very much for watching, really means a lot. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
Hello! I would like to buy this 400D for photographing trains. You said that it is not the best for moving objects. What is your opinion on that? I mean, trains are pretty big so the focus will surely be there.
if you have trouble focusing on the moving trains you should be able to just focus on the ground at the same distance as the part of the train you want to be in focus, and if you can't like if you're shooting a train through a whole bunch of brush or trees i guess you can always try to manually focus
Thank you very much for watching and also for you support, very much appreciated it! :-) I for sure will keep improving and producing more contents, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
Thank you for watching, as mentioned in the video, this camera cannot shoot video and the technology is too old for that too. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
Am hoping to buy one of these tomorrow, the question I would like to know is. I only have a Chromebook, so know i can't download pictures on to it. So how can i transfer my pictures over to my android phone instead please. I have been researching for hours on end, and can't find the answer am looking for. Thank you.
Congrats on getting one tomorrow ! Regarding your question, there are actually several ways that I can currently think of. One is instead of using a CF card, you can use an SD card with the CF card shaped adapter, so that you can can have that adapter inside the camera and once you want to take the card out, you can just pull out the SD card and use the SD card reader for phones to read the images on that SD card. (You can also use this method for some of the chrome books that has an SD card reader, so you can also import the images to your chrome book that way too). Another way (that only works sometimes) is to plug in the mini usb cable from the camera to the chrome book. Some chrome book will read that there is a camera connected to the computer and will try to communicate with it thus allowing you to see the images. Though not always reliable but it is still worth a try. Those are the two possibilities that I can currently think of that worked in the past for the most part since I personally don’t own a chrome book. I hope that helps somewhat. I thank you very much for watching. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
@@DavidCuhls Thank you so much for getting back to me, appreciate that alot. You have helped clear my question up, and at least i now know, it's possible to do without having a laptop with windows on it. Hope you have a great day, take care and i can not wait to start taking pictures 😊
As mentioned in the video, this camera does not have live-view feature, it came out just a generation of DSLR before the live-view feature was introduced. Hope that helps, thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting. :-)
I would say that the 450D is a much better camera to go for over the 400D. The 450D has better sensor with better lowlight capability. The autofocusing system is also better and the screen is also much better to judge your images. Furthermore, you can use the Live-view feature of the 450D to better frame your images in certain conditions. :-) Hope that helps. I thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
Technically, yes, I would say so. To be honest, I personally had more fun using the 350d but the 400d has better dynamic range, higher resolution, better screen, more accurate exposures, sensor cleaning and better autofocusing system with more autofocusing points. So I would would say that the 400d would be a much better option to go for in you had to choose one of them to invest in. :-) Furthermore, the price difference isn't that much either, so picking the 400d is really a no brainer. :-) Hope that helps a bit. Thanks so much for watching! I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
I just got this camera a few days ago for £80 on ebay. Came with Lens, charger, battery, CDs, instructions and a case (Which to buy new would be £50). I was scared that my phone had a higher MP but this DLSR looks better. My own problem is low light performance but this can be countered easily. Also, it's about the photographer, not their equipment (mostly).
Congrats on getting the camera and as your said, it's mostly about the photographer rather than the equipment. I am sure you will be able to produce some great results with the camera! :-) Thank you so much for watching and also for sharing your story, really appreciated it. :-) I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
@@AnalogFlava I have an s10e. It wasnt worth me paying loads of money to get a camera that could record at a higher quality than my smartphone. Especially since its my first camera and I didnt know if I would enjoy photography
If you mean with regard to photographing people, I think it's a good enough camera to photograph people (as also mentioned in the video). The skin tones is also nice and smooth though due to the age, it might be so good to photograph people in low light conditions. Hope that helps a bit. Thank you for watching, have a nice day.
Ohh, that's interesting... This camera really only costs between 300€ - 400€ brand new and today can be found used between 20€ - 50€ as far as I can see. Are you sure that it's the same model or maybe there are extra accessories that might come with the camera that would make it more expensive? But I hope you can find one for a reasonable price or maybe go with another good model that would suit your needs as well. I am sorry to hear about your experience. I thank you very much for watching and for sharing your story. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting. Happy holidays. :-)
Then that's rather weird that such an old Canon eos 400d is being sold for 1200€... Then I think you can ignore that option since I am sure that there are many more options that are much cheaper if you really want the 400d. :-)
This is the camera I'm currently using. It fits my needs for now and it's my first one. I'll be using this until I save up enough money or ever have the need to get a better camera.

Can it be tethered and shoot to a computer directly
Would the image quality be better than an iPhone 13 camera?
Absolutely yes
Ok. I need a straight answer. What's better? Nikon d80 or Canon 400d?
Or a camera around that price range
Yes
Can it shoot videos???
I want to learn photography brother
does this camera have live view on display?
As mentioned in the video, this camera does not have live-view feature, it came out just a generation of DSLR before the live-view feature was introduced. Hope that helps, thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting. :-)
Just got mine for 99$ nzd and a extra 109$ nzd for a 50ml lense
How about 450D is it better?
I would say that the 450D is a much better camera to go for over the 400D. The 450D has better sensor with better lowlight capability. The autofocusing system is also better and the screen is also much better to judge your images. Furthermore, you can use the Live-view feature of the 450D to better frame your images in certain conditions. :-) Hope that helps. I thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
Is this better than a cheap $100 4k camera from Amazon?
wayyyyy better...those $100 4K camera from amazon are gimmick full of false claim
Is the 400d worth it over the 350d?
Technically, yes, I would say so. To be honest, I personally had more fun using the 350d but the 400d has better dynamic range, higher resolution, better screen, more accurate exposures, sensor cleaning and better autofocusing system with more autofocusing points. So I would would say that the 400d would be a much better option to go for in you had to choose one of them to invest in. :-) Furthermore, the price difference isn't that much either, so picking the 400d is really a no brainer. :-)
Hope that helps a bit.
@@DavidCuhls thanks!
what about video, can it do that better than a phone and which phone do you have?
The 400d cannot record videos~~
@@AnalogFlava I have an s10e. It wasnt worth me paying loads of money to get a camera that could record at a higher quality than my smartphone. Especially since its my first camera and I didnt know if I would enjoy photography
How about people images?
If you mean with regard to photographing people, I think it's a good enough camera to photograph people (as also mentioned in the video). The skin tones is also nice and smooth though due to the age, it might be so good to photograph people in low light conditions. Hope that helps a bit. Thank you for watching, have a nice day.
for me it shows it costed 1200€
Ohh, that's interesting... This camera really only costs between 300€ - 400€ brand new and today can be found used between 20€ - 50€ as far as I can see. Are you sure that it's the same model or maybe there are extra accessories that might come with the camera that would make it more expensive? But I hope you can find one for a reasonable price or maybe go with another good model that would suit your needs as well. I am sorry to hear about your experience. I thank you very much for watching and for sharing your story. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting. Happy holidays. :-)
@@DavidCuhls no nothing came with it only the camera ...
Then that's rather weird that such an old Canon eos 400d is being sold for 1200€... Then I think you can ignore that option since I am sure that there are many more options that are much cheaper if you really want the 400d. :-)
@@DavidCuhls Well i already have it now but i guess i got scammed or something..
Ohh, I am really sorry to hear that... I really hope you can get your money back..
