I was walking down the hall chatting with one of my favorite professors (it was a neuro-psych class) and told him briefly about how much I like Sam Harris (the topics connect due to the neurology aspect) and he said “ahhhh?” In sort of a pained way so I said “what’s your issue with him?” And he said “well he’s sort of racist” and I didn’t want to take the time to tell him how wrong that assumption is, so I just said “I grew up in an extremely toxic Pentecostal Christian household (and schools)” and that I credit The End of Faith with saving my life when I was 15. He said “oh that makes a lot of sense why you would like him so much” and we shortly parted ways as we both had to go different directions, but it has always bothered me that someone that I find to be so intelligent and thoughtful thinks that about someone who simply speaks out about issues that are touchy in an effort to bring about discourse and change. It’s not his fault that there is still racism today or that many people who believe in Islam are middle eastern. He criticizes Christianity and others PLENTY too.
Anyways, this huge misconception about him makes me sad because I now feel the need to keep to myself how inspirational and thoughtful he is and how much I admire him. Because people assume I’m racist by proxy of adoring him.
Anyways… rant over. Just sucks and I can’t imagine how much it sucks for him.

And I want to add that I saw him in NYC in 2019 with Daniel Kahneman and it was truly a pleasure. Traveled from MN just for the event and it was fabulous! I still have my notebook filled with only-legible handwriting to me from trying to scribble out my thoughts as fast as possible since everything they were talking about was so interesting!
And I keep that trip to myself because I don’t want to go on a 10 min lecture about how he isn’t racist at all.

I use to respect Sam far more until he start behaving like Bill Maher by putting the blinders on with the behavior of the far right in Israel. @@amosbackstrom5366 I didn't notice until the last few years. I get Sam's criticism of Islam but he's far too obsessed with it. I think Sam's fixation is actually undermining secularism in Islamic countries. The Islamists see some seculars like Bens double standards and interprete it as "islamophobia" and "zionist" rather than take his secular arguments seriously (which they should even if his argumentative approach is ill considered)
IMO Ben's ideological problem is he assumes because Islamists have the most religious fanatics he must therefore put most of his energies of criticism there. The right approach is criticize all religious groups in principled fashion. Singling out any specific group will just lead to that group feeling they are being "persecuted" which is counterproductive to goal of convincing them their religions are mythologies.. If someone sees a secular criticizing other religions too they are going to be much more receptive to the idea the criticism is authentic rather than ill-willed

"...the moment you get 3 sentences down...someone's going to call you a racist...no one can afford to take that chance."
This is what I've termed RAWMKYA: You're a Racist, And We Might Kick Your Ass, if you suggest American blacks have any responsibility for their actions, and/or dare to question any of their demands.
Tragically, this has evolved over decades, to be the core strategy of black American cultural leaders, and well-meaning supporters, to fight racism. Yet decades of RAWMKYA, is just reinforcing racism against blacks. It only gives the illusion of fighting racism, because so many are rightfully afraid of being RAWMKYA'd. What goes unseen, is the subsequent avoidance of a culture associated with RAWMKYA. Avoiding doing business, hiring, and/or living near members of that culture. The same effect as actual racism.
In effect, RAWMKYA is a shakedown. Paying protection money -- to avoid, as Sam notes, "reputational nullifying."
    Medieval, brute force thinking.
And the shakedown is self-sustaining. As Sam notes, calling out RAWMKYA, risks your being RAWMKYA'd.
Maybe 80% of what black American cultural leaders call racism, is just negative reaction to RAWMKYA.
This isn't actual racism -- the belief that certain races don't deserve equal dignity, compassion and fairness (DCF).
This is "I Don't Like Being Falsely Accused - ism."
And "I Don't Like Getting My Ass Kicked - ism."
News flash: Everyone -- black or nonblack -- is an "I Don't Like Getting My Ass Kicked - ist."

Sam also knows precisely how common prejudice is, seeing as he's studied neurology. A vast majority of people display surprise signals akin to the signals displayed during an oddball test if you pair a picture of a black person with a good quality, say, hero.
They are surprised to see black people as heroes, because they have a programmed belief that black people aren't heroes. :P
And we can talk about it. No problem. I problematized racism using self-fulfilling prophecies. Minorities who expect the majority to be prejudiced will behave coldly towards them, and as such they will make it harder to form an meaningful relationship.
There were objections to my idea, but noone called me a racist. In an academic setting.
We are coded to be prejudiced. We will be fighting this fight for centuries, at least.

You can’t erase pattern recognition. You can try to ideologically program people to ignore this sense against their own well being . Expect resistance.

Progress has only been made in certain places. In 2010, I went to Chicago. While I was there, I saw women with women, men with men, blacks, with white, Latinos with whites, and all of the above. It reminded me of California. Where people can just be people.
Then I got off the plane in Tulsa. Looked around, over there was your white group, over there was your black group, and over there was your Latino group. There was no race mixed. Tulsa is a very religious town. Religion is the cause of almost all the problems in the world.
Look at the war in the middle east. It's about religious beliefs, it's about hatred of one religion over another.
There is no form of hatred worse than religion.
In the u.s. religious people are trying to make laws against the LGBT+ community. Religion is attacking the transgender women out of all of it. They want laws telling these people they don't have a right to their lives because it goes against their religious beliefs.
These religious people did it back in the 60's to the black race. In the 80's they did it to the gays and lesbians.
When will religion STOP hating people?
In the 50's using your left hand was the sign of the devil. Left handed people were punished because of religious beliefs.
In the 20's, religious men put there wifes in mental hospitals. If the women talked back or refused sex.
These religious text books state in marriage a man has the right to force himself on his wife if his wife turns him down. Therefore, these religious text books advocate for rape.
In the 1800's, religious towns used to hold lotteries. A lottery was the right for religious people to murder ian nnocent person.
Today, people cherry pick their religious text books and call themselves good.
If you need religion to be good, you're already a bad person.
Religious people say that their religious beliefs give them morals and without their religious beliefs then they'd go out and murder, rape, and treat people badly.
I state if there was a religious deity. Then we all have the right to mutder, raped, and abuse people. Why? Because at the end of the day, you can just ask for forgiveness and it's granted. Then the next day you go out and do it again.
Look at the history of religion. The history speaks for itself. Religion is pure hatred.
Religion is the cancer of humanity!!!

I’ve heard people dismiss Sam Harris as Islamophobic, Jordan Peterson as “addicted to benzos”, and Joe Rogan as a far right conspiracy theorist. It never fails to amaze me how easily and thoughtlessly some people can dismiss some of the most brilliant and talented people of our generation. My life would be considerably worse without the presence of these men and their ideas in it. No man is perfect, that’s why we are humans and not gods. And I find it truly unbelievable that the same people who can look past Biden’s senility and Antifa’s terrorism, are also incapable of finding anything of value in these great men

You either want a liberal, free society or you don't. The ultra-left chose to abandon liberalism, in fact i'd say they only adopted liberalism in bad faith, so the days before wokeness are done.
Sam is a classical liberal, I'm a conservative, I understand we don't see eye to eye on many issues besides this, but it still confuses me that he cannot grasp that MANY left-leaning minorities DO NOT and NEVER wanted the "diversity" white leftists tout. They want their own insulated communities, at best. That was my on the ground experience as a white leftist before wokeness was even a thing.
So to me, it's not about "talking about race", per se. It's about whether you want to participate in a liberal, cooperative society, or not! If you don't agree to something as basic and no-brainer as that, what makes you think I'm going to stick around and help you? I'd rather work towards my and like-minded people's goals.
