What I mean is that routing around the sharp 90° turn is fine for the first half of the miter, but the second half could be splintered away as you move into it (tear-out). Think about dragging a stool with wooden legs across the floor- it might "catch" the end, and splinter. Hope that analogy made sense. Side note: routing "around the corner" on an inside miter completely changes the appearance of the rout.
I appreciate it. I'm just happy that these have been useful to you. I try to include as many tricks as possible in each video, because there are so many ways of doing things that even experienced tinkerers sometimes overlook what is at their disposal. We all learn so much from watching the ways that others solve problems... I know that I have.
I don't think that it would make much difference. The spline jig is effectively zero-clearance, so tear-out is negligible and risk is minimal because of the support that the jig provides. Side note: using a round-over bit "around the corner" of a finished miter presents a much higher risk.
this is a great video. I'm not the best when it comes to woodworking, but there are a few tips that my teachers have taught me that might help with the tenacity you have shown building the frame: at 4: 36, only rout out the inner side of the frame (the corners touching the side with the slit.) Skip ahead to 5: 46, and build the frame completely as a brute shape, adding the inserts. Then, when you go to sand, you are not needing to worry about sanding your finished project. Using a belt sander also helps keeping the length even, rather than a disc sander. Once your edges are flush to the touch, you can take the whole frame and pass the top and bottoms into your router to finish off the edges seamlessly and without worries of harming your wood.
to reduce the friction under the mouse. just drill a small hole under the mouse and put in a small spherical ball. it is just similar to the old computer mouses, with mouse balls inside.
A little felt on yhe bottom of the mouse will do... also the magnet is on the bottom of the mouse so drilling a hole for a ball bearing is not a good option...
I think I understood pretty well. Not a bad idea, especially because stainless is only barely magnetic, so it won't stick to the rare-earth magnets. I just don't think I could make such precise bends using the equipment that I have at home. Thanks for giving me ideas, though.
Others have said it, but I too appreciate the little touches in your videos. There are plenty of good wood workers on youtube, and even some exceptional ones. (Whether you judge it by their video content or woodworking technique). I appreciate the little nuances that make your videos unique. This mouse project is great!
Thank you. And yes, I have considered making musical instruments before. I would like to someday make a (don't laugh) harp, but I would be more likely to make a simpler stringed instrument, such as a zither, in the near future. It takes a rather precise skill set to produce a decent-sounding instrument, so I need to first do a ton of research.
Great handiwork, cute and whimsical, and it looks like lots of fun to play! The gameplay video of reckless, fast brown mouse vs slow, careful white mouse was totally sweet. This would be doubly fun as an alternative to beer pong. :)
Both explanations make perfect sense, I thought the concern was for the thin slots that were cut (to put in the contrasting colored material), not JUST the fact that it was a miter to begin with. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
The cheese was the only clue I left on the first video. The mice were made for the maze, not the other way around. It just seemed like a good idea to split it into two videos.
wow, I absolutely love this maze as a game and your handiwork is just awesome...the mixture of woods really comes out and its beautiful and mesmerizing. Thank you so much for sharing your work
That would be about the closest thing to a suitable occupation for me. I wonder if they get decent health-care plans there. The only problem is that I just don't ever seem to work well with the other elves.
All audio seemed to cut out way before. It actually made me a bit uneasy. I had just started thinking to myself how much it felt like a movie when he started zooming in. It was as if it was from a horror film, and it really threw me for a loop.
Great little toy, really nice very impressed. I joined your channel not because of this video alone but because of your many other video that use clever tricks, and thats what I appreciate the most. Your not just a hobby woodworker but it seems you share alot of clever little tricks and that's what I gain the most from this channel. So thank you very much for these videos.
Please make a vid if you find it, that would be great to see. I'm so glad that you like the videos, but please, no more steps! This one was too complex as it stands. I lost quite a bit of footage this time because the table was rubbing the camera stand at the beginning. I don't like to omit any shots that are relevant, but I must sometimes for the sake of brevity and quality- and it was still ten minutes long.
Wow. This is the second video from you that I have seen and you are pretty creative. I wish I was pretty crafty with wood like you are. I always wanted to be able to create my own physical board games. I lack the skill and the equipment. Keep up the awesome work!
That's why we have power tools and jigs because we don't have the skills. Power tools also increase the time we have to think of new creations. I avoid acquiring skills because they bog you down. When I have to acquire them I max them out because they have a limited lifespan.
I think what would be neat would be an opening that slids down on an edge. That would allow you to have "plates" so you could sliden different mazes in and out.(It sounded alot cooler in my head).
Nice job Pocket. My Grandkids would enjoy the heck out of that game.I just subscribed to your channel. Think you for showing me the corner cutting jig, I'am going to make one of those.keep the videos coming. Kevin.
Awww... wee sad mouse at the end. Please think of a project that has about 2000 steps in it because I love watching the way you work. Westerphone commented that their grandparents had a game like this...well, so did mine. The game was a driving game in which the player manoeuvered a litle red car along streets using a magnet held on an extendable arm inside the box the game sat on. It might be in my Mother's house so I'll get into the attic and have a look. Send a rescue team if I disappear.
This is awesome. Loving your videos. One of my biggest unfulfilled desires is to do woodwork, but I don't have access to materials and equipment. So watching these is almost a replacement =) Please keep it up!
That MDF cutout thing looked tedious as hell. I was picturing that thing snapping in two and you breaking down in tears just as you said you only had to build it once.
It really wasn't bad- one of those things that looks worse than it is. It was hardboard, which is pretty tough stuff, but I wouldn't even try with MDF. Also, a band-saw makes short work of it.
This is really cool, it reminds me of when I used to play with those marble labyrinths where there are knobs on each side to tilt the course in order to doge the holes throughout the maze. Just like this www.intotheabyss.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/labyrinth500.jpg I don't know if you take requests or just up for a new project, but one of these would be a pretty fun build.
Those are a lot of fun. I considered doing one awhile back, because I remember playing with one when I was a kid. Maybe if I can come up with a new twist for it... maybe like if it had a non-flat map or something.
pocket83 I want to second a request for a marble maze. We had a very old one at my high school that I loved to play. My idea for a stand, is that you mount it on some table legs, so people could stand at it.
Please please PLEASE try to start maybe selling these on Ebay or Amazon somehow, because I love your projects, but cant afford all the materials, mostly because I live in an apartment, and don't have a place where I would store the wood cutters and all that.
Really interesting concept! You could add some "traps" to the maze like magnets hidden under the track to flip the mouse over. Just a tough but the project is perfect as it is. only thing that really amazes me is the volume of shit you get for making videos.
You kind of sound like the angry video game nerd - which is cool. I really like your stuff its neat! How much do you got invested in total woodworking equipment? (Like a round about number if it was all new).
David Prentice Yeah, some of my commenting rants are as nasty as his, too. I get asked that question lots, but I have no idea. I've bought/fixed/found/stolen/traded/salvaged tools for a number of years now. It takes a huge investment in time and effort, so do it a piece at a time. Pro-tip: If you are doing a job and getting paid for it, buy a tool every time. Think of it as part of the deal, and it's a good habit. Just figure it into the price. Good luck ;)
shauny17091987 Wow. You can't say anything here on YT without some social justice white knight coming to "fix" you. The point was hyperbolic, you dim-wit; the idea was to do whatever it takes to acquire tools. I am not seriously advocating tool theft. Now go foist your values elsewhere.
pocket83 Cool after 7 months I got the notification from youtube that you replied! XD Thanks man! Love your work, I have no idea how to work with wood myself, wish I knew.. let me know when you start taking in students xD
+Tomas Tripod Agreed. It is awful. There are soooo many comments that I don't receive a notification for. G+ can't die soon enough. Hopefully we will laugh about it in five years.
If you ever need some counsel with the measurements for making a harp or other stringed instruments, just message me. It's not that hard. Woodwinds and brass are the worst, and hammered drums are a pain to make.
Hi .... My suggestion for the stand......Hard to explain, easier to draw, but here goes !! Take some nice Stainless steel wire/rod, bend into a elonggated 'U' form take the uprights and bend at 90 degrees and make only about an inch long. Make a pair of these.. Simple drill two holes in your board edge strip on opposite sides. insert ends of rods into holes. Simple lightweight and shiny chrome or stainless Elegant !!! Regards Steve

bmetal2 but it might fall out

This channel is pure gold

The hardboard looks awesome -- much better than I would have anticipated. Love seeing people try (and succeed at) unconventional things. Great video.
Are you the coolest guy on the internet?
Nope, that title would go to me. ;-)
The cheese was the only clue I left on the first video. The mice were made for the maze, not the other way around. It just seemed like a good idea to split it into two videos.

Artistic Hobo it's*

3:04 Damn! Your finger got super close to the blade!!
I used editing to produce dramatic effect. I like poking at the finger safety patrol here and there.
hardrockinhere He's an alpha, he is immune to blade cuts.
+Jack Memmer definitely an alpha. After all, he can sink a nail in one hit. Only the true alphas can do that.
theminerofskulls LOL
All audio seemed to cut out way before. It actually made me a bit uneasy. I had just started thinking to myself how much it felt like a movie when he started zooming in. It was as if it was from a horror film, and it really threw me for a loop.
argh! those cute mice! good job on the maze! the makeshift stand that you made is beatiful btw!
It was refreshing looking. Thanks for watching.
That would be great for a more permanent one. Imagine if it was huge, and four mice could be used at a time. Kids would love it. Thanks
I thought this was a stop motion video at first because of the way the mice moved and i was very confused
I watched a few videos of yours and found them all so creative! You sir, got yourself a new sub!
Please make a vid if you find it, that would be great to see. I'm so glad that you like the videos, but please, no more steps! This one was too complex as it stands. 9:10 Moral of the story? "Slow and steady wins the race" :D
I like the way... beer! I mean, I think you...beer! I just wanted to say that... beer! Never mind! :(
Wow. This is the second video from you that I have seen and you are pretty creative. I wish I was pretty crafty with wood like you are. I always wanted to be able to create my own physical board games. I lack the skill and the equipment. Keep up the awesome work!

One of my favorite videos by you.
Feel thirsty all of the sudden...
This is the kind of thing that you could sell online. A great way to make a profit.
I think what would be neat would be an opening that slids down on an edge. That would allow you to have "plates" so you could sliden different mazes in and out.(It sounded alot cooler in my head).
would it have been easier to put the spline in before rounding out the trim pieces, to avoid risking damage to the mahogany after the fact?
You could use nylon, or even felt, or the fuzzy side of self adhesive Velcro. Just a thought...
Thanks. I do kind of like it, but it is a little big, and does not break down. Maybe someone here will have some good advice for an improvement.
would adding a non magnetic metal bearing at the bottom of the mouse help reduce the jerking instead of nylon?
Nice job Pocket. My Grandkids would enjoy the heck out of that game.I just subscribed to your channel. Think you for showing me the corner cutting jig, I'am going to make one of those.keep the videos coming.

Did you clamp your work effectively? 05:30...I love that brown mouse.
It'd be cool to have etch-a-sketch type of controls, though, I'm not sure how this would work for multiple mice.
Try watching the video. Let me know if I need to provide you with a link.
I really enjoy your Videos. How about Hanging or Suspending the Maze from above ?
This is awesome. Loving your videos. One of my biggest unfulfilled desires is to do woodwork, but I don't have access to materials and equipment. So watching these is almost a replacement =) Please keep it up!
higher risk because we've compromised the structural integrity of the components, or just in genera?
Pretty cool. I love all your jigs!
What's with the random beer mug at 4:13? ...Or is this a running joke on your channel? I'm pretty new to it, so I wouldn't know.
the joke is that he puts thse.types of things in all of his vids read his about I tells you
That MDF cutout thing looked tedious as hell. I was picturing that thing snapping in two and you breaking down in tears just as you said you only had to build it once.

Perhaps you could revisit this with a design to control the mouse from an external mechanical mechanism. Anyway love your work as always!!
That is such a good idea. Etch~A~Sketch controls would make this a blast!
Please tell me you will do it! That would be amazing.
Fun!
Laugh out loud moment: "I was just thinking how I don't get to do enough hand sanding anymore."
Ever had to return some videotapes?
I like the white mouse better. She is not only the winner but also very polite, as you can see from 8:57! Also she looks way cuter.
You kind of sound like the angry video game nerd - which is cool. I really like your stuff its neat! How much do you got invested in total woodworking equipment? (Like a round about number if it was all new).

post code please ?
Just an idea try make a wooden Rubik's cube or a regular Rubik's cube
Tbh this is amazing, the last time i watched it was back in 2013 or 2014 probably, using a different account
If it's going to be square anyway, why not have 4 players?
whats with the flash of beer at 4:12 ? I don't get it
+jordan rossiter he seems to put one flash frame of something in most, or a lot of his videos.
Those triangles at 7:00, what are they for? Only details?
Tomas Tripod Those are called splines. They are decorative, but they are also used to make an extremely strong miter.
pocket83

+pocket83² Sadly it's all about money, as long as google has money, and they will for a long time, G+ will still be a thing.. :(
No one else noticed the beer picture flash after he said that he was glad that he didnt have to rebuild it
Shrewd design making dimensions fit to tools
Do you do this as a hobby or do you sell your work/do custom content?
Did you ever get a stand for it?
Proven that slow and steady wins the race
Y is there a random bear?
Ohhhhh this would be an amazing game for kids and drunk adults!
What a great project. Good job!
If you ever need some counsel with the measurements for making a harp or other stringed instruments, just message me. It's not that hard. Woodwinds and brass are the worst, and hammered drums are a pain to make.
Awesome work as always!
I like how the mouse looks like it's stop-motion. It's probably a little annoying though.
Beautiful piece
Awesome work as always!!!

Was that a beer? I did no pausing
are u selling this?
Just what I was thinking when I saw the 1st video, make a maze for them.
Awesome game
Man... I wish I could work with you...
your kids will/must be the happiest kids in the world
Very cool. Thanks for posting!
9:05 Slow and steady wins the race!
Is this for real mice or a game?
No one seen the flash of the pitcher of beer after he said it went rather well lmfao sneaky
yup
5:30 holy frock, that's a lot of clamps!
Ok I'm in love with you! yeah the Mouse Maze is ok too.. you are a genius!
You sir got a new sub
You can make a business yiu maje mire if thosse I deas and sell it or make it a factory to make it faster to do it (srry fir the gramar I think).
Good job, Now let's go get a pint! 4:12 mark!
hmm, to glue it together, a little bit too much clamps eh?
No such thing as too much clamping when it comes to glue.
well, alright. It is a delicate thing.
5:31 wow looks like a heavy ass piece of metal isn't enough to hold it down XD
Hassan Shaikh wood glue likes to slide, so just putting a weight on something is a bad idea, it'll let it slide around and it won't be flush
That is class man
This thing is so sweet.
Who is watching this in 2021,during the Coronavirus pandemic? I am sure you are bored so you decided to watch it
Feeling thirsty all of a sudden
+R III Ruiz Maybe because of the picture of the beer lol
I thought it was an autonomous robot and then saw the magnet lol
very cute!
That is so RAD I'll take 1 please
Are you a father? pocket83 Your kids must think you are the coolest person ever.
I thought it was stop motion at first
