Jerry Hsu wow! Never heard him talk about the reason why he did that whole part switch. Beyond amazing
OK Grosso, the vids from the late 80's and early 90's ruled. Not all of us lived in the great skate utopia of California. Try growing up in a little town in Missouri that's biggest attraction was Walmart. Videos were like reading Thrasher, but it moved. Animal Chin blew our minds. Hocus pocus no words. Watching Lance skate was the best inspiration we ever had. We didn't have ramps. We had schools loading docks and ditches.
Love you man but vids rule.
Exactly dude! I grew up in rural NC in the 80's and 90's, we made all of our ramps. No skate parks. Hocus Pocus, Video Days, Public Domain, Ban This, Speed Freaks, Rubbish Heap, that's how we learned new tricks. Meant the world to us.
I still have ban this on vhs.
Tracey Allen I still have Rubbish Heap and Public Domain on VHS.
Yeah, man, I lived and still live in Scandinavia, where it's no-skate-weather for 4 months per year (back in the 80s and 90s it was probably more like 5 months) and in a small town on top of that, which had only handful of skaters. Skate videos were really like what you said and in my case it was also something that helped me to get thru the winter, having my skate juices flow (there really was no indoor parks here when I was young).
I still remember it like yesterday, when my big brother's friend came to my parents' house and showed us "Shackle Me Not" and "Public Domain". It blew my mind, gave me so much inspiration, that I still skate (it's my 30th year this summer and pretty big thanks for that goes to skate videos). I actually still watch regularly "Shackle Me Not" and "Hokus Pokus". Not sure what it is, but those two have somehow aged well and stayed so magical in all their roughness.
That said, I do understand the point from Grosso's and other professional's point of view, how that changed things. The way of "if it's not on film, it didn't happen". I bet it can suck balls sometimes, trying to get the trick on video or photo, after you've maybe done it without anyone filming it. And this probably sometimes leads to the scenario, where you have to always have someone with you, to film you. But then again, these guys got and still get money from doing that... but yeah, I guess there are many angles.
Tracey,, 100% FO SURE!!!
~Lance stood out soo much..I remember after watching ANimal Chin and thinking 'these dudes are kinda lame & dorky..Skating (outside of Cali like you said) was more like Alva and eventually H-street..Mike McGill was just a eff;n Goober. Tony Hawk too.. And 95% of skaters in all suburbia outside of Cali skated street and MiniRamps..So TonyHawls awesomeness didn't apply...And Rodney Mullen was beyond droky. my underwear are longer then his shorts..
*My friends still bash on Mullen whenever we get all us together for reunion sessions. about how he ruined street skating blahblah. not ruined it but twisted it..Thank god companies like Black Label still sell shaped decks..
I don't like 'Welcome' decks but will skate em if there's nothing'shaped' when I re-up..
But reissues are where it's @... That Corey O'Brien santa Cruz has my eye atm.you should see that shape.
whataya you think of this shape Tracey?

I love this episode! As a kid growing up in Canada, rural mid-west, I fell in love with skateboarding after going to Expo 86. I then proceeded to build ramps on our farm and learn how to kickturn. First issue of Thrasher in October of 87’ (I think Salba was on the cover smith grinding in a bowl). Videos helped me connect to skateboarding. I would drive 3 hours to buy one. I started filming in 89 by renting. Camera from a local store for $20/weekend. Collected footage and edited it with 2 VCR’s and a stereo to make a video in 92’ titled “A million days of skating”(RUclips). H-street broke the mould and definitely influenced me to film raw skating and turn it into something cool. Thanks Grosso! R.I.P.
Wow! Its so rad to read about skateboarding and how you did things your way then. I'll check out the edit for sure, its amazing you even figured out how to edit back then!
Sounds like my childhood, 46 and still pushing around. My first deck was Gator, I think I cursed him!
It’s actually Saturday morning but I still love you Grosso! RIP!!!
Rest in peace Grosso we love you man ❤️
There was not one red curb in my town, i was so pissed...
that made me cry XD
hahahaha
We're glad you enjoyed, halfpipefreak! Thanks again for watching! If you want to see more awesome skate videos, check out this playlist, here: bit.ly/2boADme
Thanks Vans team, you guys are awesome, keep these great vids coming ;D
Cheers !
halfpipefreak rub brick, paint, and clear coat/wax any old curb!
Omg someone understands my pain!
There was an old video of people skating Upland combi with Duane and a few others and it had the English Beat song "I confess" along with some freestyle with a Joe Jackson song. I don't remember it but it was pretty old, around 82'?
Propeller has got to be the best skate video ever, Vans made me wanna skate even more after watching it
Gullwing "inside out" the soundtrack to that video is amazing. Trippy, dark, aerie and then fast, upbeat. So frickin good and the editing is artistic.
The first skate vid I've seen was a VHS you could get through a television ad called Psycho Skate I'm 45 now i still skate and i still own the damn video too lol...Dedication !
RIP Jeff👊🏼
One thing's for sure: video killed vert skating. The late 80s/early 90s street revolution was made possible by smaller and more affordable recording equipment becoming available. This, of course, allowed for crazy one-off video magic to be the stuff on which careers were based, rather than consistent contest skating. But vert also just doesn't translate as well to video: unless you're going out building crazy Danny Way-style ramps, you're going to be looking at the same skatepark environment for the whole part. Street skate videos, on the other hand, provided a glimpse into other cities and scenes, way before the internet made this possible. The excitement of street skating videos comes from seeing skaters put an urban environment to innovative use. That's why it's still not on to have park footie in a 'street' part. You don't really get the sense of speed and how crazy vert skating actually is by watching it on video, either.
Skate Visions is what I remember most from the 80’s because of the awesome soundtrack by Agent Orange... also Streets of Fire and some of the Powell videos
So many of my favorite skateboarders! 😲
that "yeah dude" 5:21 is in the 411 theme remix issue 50
Well for us skate videos and even the cheesy movies from 70s-80s were gold as we lived in the sticks with the closest skatepark 2-3 hours away. Our only exposure was via the stills in Skateboarder/Transworld/Thrasher/etc. and the occasional clips on CBS sports, or even more comical shows like Charilie Angels or CHIPs. Made it difficult to try to mimic some of the more advanced stuff on our plywood monstrosities until we got access to videos. Especially the contest vids from the 80s so I'm thankful they came around. But I agree the last 15 yrs or so seems kinda pointless as you can find what you need online, but in those early days, even the most ridiculous of live action movies/videos were a God-send!
Anything Natas, the rubber boys, Hokus Pokus, and especially Frankie Hill! I could not sit still after watching it. Then after not skating for ten years I bought the Yeah Right DVD, and got the same feeling!
I remember watching Bones Brigade Video Show with my Uncle David & his friends, and we used to go hard in the streets after that. I remember 💣n hills and shreddin everything everywhere
The Shorty's Fulfill the Dream video reminds me of high school.
14:03 "EMERICA MENIKMATI" I DIED HAHAHA
***** apasi kamu
Haha, I saw that.
starting at 5:35 the listen hard to what Julien says. FUCK !!!!!! it brought me to tears.
Hey dvs2751, thanks for watching! Julien really does have a way with words. The next Loveletters episode comes out this Thursday, so be sure to check back! Meanwhile, catch up on all past episodes, here: bit.ly/2aEtmj5
I love Mark but H-Street videos blew my mind. If you were used to Powell videos it was refreshing how homemade everything looked. On the other hand Video Days was mind blowing too.
so, jeff grossing, jason Jessee and mark gonzales talking about skateboarding.....doesn't get much better than that!!
Dude Jeff Grosso totally called me out on this fucking Saturday night hahahaha
We love that! Did you click to watch more?! You should definitely listen to Grosso and check out more Loveletters episodes, here: bit.ly/2bGui9o
FINALLY A NEW EPISODE!
bones brigade 1....so huge in the reemergence of the 80s skate era,
Oh shit OD,s !!!! Dude ! First time I’ve seen it report. Finally haha that place was a trip Man. The location was crucial man. So nice to see that.
I went up there and met Dave and used to watch videos there alot me n some guys from NYC Harold or Hamilton john carter Jamal Simmons and who ever else was coming would skate up there on the way to mahlolies or wherever.
It was a rough place
which video was AVE's FS 5-0 in?? the one at 11:30
Grosso, I know what you mean but I like the videos because I love skating, but am old and suck, and I never will be able to do any of this rad stuff, so I can live vicariously through these and pretend I can shred like Lance, Jason etc. this is shock and awe shit, and even though I won't be sailing through the air (on purpose) these vids get me stoked to get out there.
Glad you got stoked off this! Hope you get back out there soon Stephen! If you haven't yet, you should check out more from Jeff Grosso's Loveletters here: bit.ly/2osbFYU
love love letters! SO MUCH LOVE!!!
Give the editor a raise.
gx1000’s roll up is the video that started everything for me that shit is fucking legendary
Holy shit. I loved Curb Dogs! Lost in the recesses of my memory until now.
favorite one by far
what vid did Rick Howard manny a stump?
anybody else notice the gun in jason jessees pocket
And on the table, earlier on. You can always count on Jason to be packing heat.
Never knew GLOCK made audio equipment:
ruclips.net/video/kob0FP3ERWw/видео.htmlm23s
I literally just noticed it lmfao!!!!!
+David Vincent i seen that one too!! But there also was one in his pocket sometime in the video
lol thats exactly what i was gonna say.
Board crazy was my first skate video I can't believe they advertised that or showed it in the intro
oh my god i've been trying for a looong time figuring out what's the song from the Skateboard Madness part. Somebody pleeease tell me the name !
no mention of AWS in the videos episode... c'mon
seriously, and no big brother
Yeah... Big Brother and CKY made that Hollywood jump (with skate video type format). H Street videos were so ahead of there time back then too
umm, weren't shots from Photosynthesis and Mosiac in this?
*****
In my opinion what AWS deserved mention and discussion, not just short clips cut in with others. But your opinion can be "umm," we're all entitled to our thoughts.
I hear what you are saying but grosso is a middle aged man, he grew up watching the videos he talked about. Aws, big brother, flip, girl/chocolate are all super relevant but another generation. Would be sick to see another episode on these though I could watch these clips all day.....
the video that Gonz is talking about,is named "psycho skate"...,...Love it-have it on vhs:-)
Grosso Forever 💕
Nice. So glad it's back!
And fuck yeah 6 stairs! Steppin' up yer production game! The low-pro style was fun as hell too, but this is looking def a bit more polished.
Has anybody noticed Jason Jessees gun? 13:28
yes it's called a battery pack
He loves guns, yes, but that's transponder for the wireless microphone he is wearing.
Bit too light on the ranting for me. Still good though.
Never disappointed good show 10/10 recommend
Needed the transistor sect Good & Evil animation.
yo I can answer this one - skateboarding LOOKS as good as it feels xx
Binging these is bittersweet. Skatevisions is also the 1st kickflip on video by Gonz; backside kickflip to disaster over the channel at EZ-7 in Houston. Facts.
@a w at the very end there is a commercial for Skatevisions 2 which never saw release. Gonz ollies the pool and does backside kickflip to disaster over the channel at EZ-7 ditch in Houston.
If i was stranded on a desert island, all I would want is a VHS player and a copy of Curb Dogs dude
DUDE!! What town do you live in where there isnt one red curb?
All in all, this was a pretty good skate video.
My favorite video was The New Blood Video when Chris Cole 360 Flip Wallenberg for his ender
14:29 this describes me as I am in the bathtub watching this vid lmao
Who was that huge fall on the x games ramp
Obrigado pelas legendas
Flip's Sorry is the greatest skate video of all time.
Could not agree more! Flip's Sorry video is one of the greats! What were some other influential skate videos that you watched? If you haven't yet, you should check out more from Jeff Grosso here: bit.ly/2pjKC3r
That last song was bad ass.
Streets On Fire is the best goddamn video ever
Dude, Jerry is my #2 and this is my favorite spot in skating but tell me he doesn't do a regular, that is Goofy, backside tailslide to Fakie at 11:01
Just saying it's not all switch
When the standard gets dropped and we can say a whole part is this or that or a whole anything is this or that when it's not the whole thing when you can say yeah I did all those chin-ups one handed but at one point you reached up and grabbed the bar with both hands it's just an example we are losing our standards as a society
It's a Nollie back tail idiot
My favorite skate videos are from Girl, Toy Machine and Zero
Lance was soo Gnarly..He didn't seem as stiff as Rodney or Cab or McGill..
*Still looking for that Rare Lance Mountain Adidas
Hokus Pokus and Shackle me not, RULED!!!!
Yeah Matt!!
Also Streets of fire.......Brave captain 👨✈️ there are doubts...regarding your ability!!
We always considered the camcorder the "Anti Skate Gun"
worse than a session killer
Who is Bogarting the "Duel In The Desert" vert contest footy from that Tempe AZ water park? Dorfman? Hoffman? The Man?!?!
It's a very historical contest, bcuz Miller beat Hawk (came back from the Losers bracket 2X) without the 540. I have also been told that T-Mag got seriously overlooked by the judges. Regardless, it's a DAMN SHAME that such footy is not available in any format. The news of that contest traveled FAST
Love you Skateboard
I fucking love Grosso
Barbarians at the Gate (1994) was the best “non-skate video” Skate Video.
the best contest video is Jim's Ramp Jam
agreed 100%
Do you mean Joe's Ramp Jam? If so that was the best. Niel Blender Ripped.
That theme song to Curb Dogs is fuckin hilarious
I 2nd that there is a difference between film and video I started in 1976 and I still ride in 2020 I met Grosso at Skate City . We were young . Me and Corey O Brien drove my Datsun 510 to the Turkey Shoot no drivers license. Grosso rips ( no one ) Jon Insco San Francisco CA 4132020 12:08am
I got a VHS copy of curb dogs
I dont really like watching skate videos anymore unless its of people I know. They all look the same to me now. But I do love making them.
Lol....I had one of those dorky-ass headbands. Don't remember how I got it, or what happened to it.
6:19 Grosso looks like a little kid embarrassed cause daddy Hawk caught him talking shit. Tony's not mad, he's just disappointed.
Curb Dawgs was the first skate video I ever saw
fuck yea been waiting for another episiode
8:08 Skateboarding and documentary film making.
Gleaming the Cube
Awesome
7:46 Kyuss days.
Welcome to hell , toy machine. Forever my favorite
Add Speed Freaks and im happy AF!
Zero is better
RIP GROSSO!
SICK!
There’s allot of heavy metal in this one instead of the “skate rock.” I’ve heard Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica in this one.
Ace.
sick boys is the shit. I've watched it 3 times. I wasn't even alive during the 80s
The red devil in the letters so sick
Grasso hates everything
bigben1986 you spelt his name wrong . He is gonna hate that
what planet are you living on bro hating stuff is cool
skaterdater is a canadian skateboard film from the 60's
no mention of any big brother videos? come on now....
Just my theory.
Skateboarding is the ultimate peaceful stand against the system. Wood and metal used to grind away concrete, Skate and Destroy, literally. We wreck ourselves to obtain a tiny fraction of a second it takes to land whatever trick, we show our will power, our stubbornness and our soul, open for all to see. Yet nobody but a fellow soul-dier knows your mission, and how close you are to the existential victory over that unseen entity that represents that system. We're children riding toys to them. But to each other we are inventors, engineers, soothsayers, and one Tony Trujillo. SK8orDiE.
Jerry Hsu is the fuckin man
Hahaha, it is saturday night and I don't have any pants on!!
Love this shit....
🤘🏻!
fuck yes
I admit(proudly) that I don't have 1 single video part of myself since 1987 when I started...
*im in a lot of videos others filmed (locals/regular Joes),, and most of the time they would be session on the fun box and I would skate fast around the WHOLE are/park etc and do a fast Manny or 5.0 on the funbox.. totally snaking them.. I used to do this a lot back in the day but haven't done it since 2018 ;D
*Yeah I get triggered when I see the 18-21 year old kook with Elvis looking hair and skin tight super short shorts & his Nike, not landing shit because they try something too hard like Manny tre flip out/off fun box.. Where I may not do that but I can lipslide and nose, tail, blunt slide the box and roll away makes me happy....
*Maybe i'll be nicer when I turn 50 in 5 years..
🤘🏼🔥🛸
Tent city and the Route 66 video.
We're stoked you enjoyed, Ben! Have you seen the most recent Loveletters episode? You definitely should! bit.ly/2aWZRuk
thanks dudes!
without video we would all be stuck with Grosso in the caveman days doing eggplants
