One of the best of showcasing what he's talking about "everything around you is a weapon" Jackie Chan. Yes I know, it's movies but it's not completely fake. What I mean is, in Jackie Chan's movies, he often showcases real options available to him, to protect himself.

use the bill of the cap to jab the throat or eyes i have seen people put lead shot in the lining of their hats and use it like a sap or puting razor blades in the bill and using it for a slashing weapon a hat is something overlooked by security and regular people all the time i am glad someone brought it up

    • @daneg007

DirtPoorFarmer you forgot to write "in movies" after you wrote "i've seen people" and before "put lead shot....".

In San Soo we redirect whatever incoming; thus, I see using the ball cap as a redirect of the mind. I like to say the body is robot to the mind. When any part of the body gets struck even if minor, the mind directs hands and limbs to cover or comfort the part that is struck.
Thus, if you strike the eyes the opponents hands will be trying to cover/protect the eyes from further injury even if only a second. That gives you enough time to implement a follow up strike. Same with a shot to the groin, ribs, back, and so on. The hands will go to where the pain is even for a second.
So we redirect the mind mentally just as we redirect an incoming punch physically. And yes, we can use ANYthing as a weapon. Great lesson, thank you...

Hopefully your hat fits the attackers head and your head isnt more narrow and smaller to where the hat won't fit over his head, or your head is not wider to where the hat will simply slip off his head. but this is a great idea and something I never thought of.

I like the way Doug thinks about the weapons of oppritunity I had to use this once not the hat thing but the weapons of oppritunity idea. I got jumped by 4 or 5 guys pertty good this was almost 10 years ago but I got away from them and ran for my life they chased me and mind you my ass was kicked pretty bad so when I felt I could'nt run anymore I noticed they were not that far away so I found a dried branch on the ground broke a piece off and when they came back I stabbed 2 of them with it and it was enough to have them back off until an old dude yelled that he's on the phone with police and they ran off. I was really lucky that old guy had the balls to yell that cause who knows what would've happened.

Great overall philosophy of “opportunity “. I remember goofing off sparing with a pal that was a high deg black belt (which I am not) and he grabbed a stool as a tool to push me back, but the second I saw that he had the thing gripped “backwards”, holding the bottom of the legs instead of the seat, I instantly realized the legs were now pivot points (or “hinges” of sorts) with his wrists, so I used my knee to quickly knock the seat upward towards him, this breaking his grip/control of the stool, and it smacked him in the chin, and down he went (didn’t really want to hurt my friend, but that’s the way it goes when roughhousing). We had a good laugh afterwards and he congratulated me on my quick thinking with regards to “situational objects”. Point has stuck with me ever since. Love your videos 👍

As a fellow FMA practitioner and instructor, I will have to say that Doug Marcaida is the perfect mix of skill, humor and intelligence that is a credit to the Filipino Martial Arts community. So many detractors and haters don't seem to realize the skill level and advanced training that it takes to present and teach others with the proficiency that this man has. I have never even been in the same room as this man, but I do not hesitate (just from watching his videos) to say that his techniques are solid! Giving credit where credit is due, kapatid. Human beings are not invincable, their are vulnerabilities, weaknesses ect. Youbwant to exploit one of these and adapt as best as you can or evade and get the fuck out of their if you can.

    • @mintyfresh4855
      @mintyfresh4855 8 лет назад +2

@cody bratescu Fighting in the end is about someone who reacts the fastest to a situation he or she is placed in and being able to find a solution to it whether it is using martial arts, guns, knives, or even just talking. Using a pen to fight is perfectly a fine weapon IF you know how to use it for your fight. After all, tactical pens are valuable weapons under the right person. Bowls hurt like hell so find a way to use it. Bottom line is, use them to your advantage whether you are just trying to buy some time to get away, or to actually hurt them.

They are playing with ideas on how ordinary things can be used. Not teaching it as an exact science. Part of figuring if something will work is to try different methods of using it to see what will work and what won't. Personally, I think that would be a great way to catch a few fists in the gut while someone tried it. But people have been using different items to distract opponents for centuries. Some knife fighters will wave a handkerchief in an opponent's face with their off hand to distract from what the knife in their primary hand is doing.

In the US Navy the rolled neckerchief was an important part of the "Crackerjack" uniform. You could tuck in a roll of nickels or dimes in the back of the neckerchief, which laid under the back flap of the uniform. Totally hidden, but if you needed it you could take the neckerchief off and it made a dandy swinging weapon when you cracked somebody alongside the jaw with the coin roll. Plus, if necessary and you had no other funds, you could always pay for a taxi back to the base or ship.

    • @meaningfulmindfulness15
      @meaningfulmindfulness15 4 года назад +11

I feel you on the perspective, but define a legit street fight though. I know a few goons who could actually pull off some intriguingly effective improvised techniques. Like with Jiu Jitsu using your opponents clothes against them. Or someone in a street fight utilizing his belt on his waist, targeting the knuckles and face because his opponent pulls out a knife.
Throwing a hat at someone's face while following up with a well practiced combo might do pretty well against the drunk persom trying to pick a fight with you. It's basically a feint.
I work in a dive bar where many fights have happened between people of various backgrounds and that "Hollywood" stuff can truly become a reality sometimes. Just saying that it can't be completely shut out as 'no way' because there are definitely several. 🤙

Yeah one could pull this off in a bar fight (obvious reason is that folks have been drinking) but never going to work anywhere else.

@@mosseblack8635 never is the key word. This most definitely can work anywhere else is depending on the circumstances. (Seen plenty of sober people fighting in and away from bar environments; however, situational awareness isn't gifted to everyone. Saying something can never work in regards to fighting applications is like saying a cross jab or turning kick will never be effective on your opponent.

@Walk with me ...its using the hat as a physical stand in for the philosophy he is trying to teach I hear him saying don't memorize techniques use weapons of opportunity at all times being aware of your surroundings and that EVEN a hat can be used to your advantage as a weapon, I am not hearing him say use a hat to train and fight with. Thats what I got out of it anyhow. I could be wrong

This is the true meaning that you do not want to fight your Filipino mom, . . . She will beat you with a toy black board, tsinelas, a plastic ruler, a tabo, belt, a branch, a stick broom, a fine broom, a feather duster, a handkerchief, an umbrella, a ballpen, a pencil, a kitchen utensils and his fist and palm. Never ever fail to disrespect them vuz theyre you Filipina moms.

That's why I try to carry an umbrella wherever I go :) a glass cannon, sure, but I'd rather be out of a sticky situation and down one umbrella than be stuck in a sticky situation without any improvised weapon on my person.
also I know they make a specialty umbrella for that use but I don't have the funds lol

'training yourself to respond when the situation presents itself' - is what I go by from training in 'baguazhang' for many years. It's philosophy is based on 'the book of changes' (basically it's focusis on change) so trains this idea of using the 'methods' to change according to the situation

Great stuff Mr. Marcaida. Your wisdom, knowledge, skill and experience are very evident in this video. The philosophy and concepts mentioned in the video are time tested and proven by those of us who have actually seen real combat; whether it be in actual war or a street brawl. Keep doing what you're doing Sir.
All the nay sayers and negative commenters obviously have no experience in the area of combat. Damn MMA junkies...

we filipinos always fight with everything our hands held into:rocks,umbrella,knapsack,chairs,pens...we dont fight fair in a streetfight thats why most of the time the loser ends up in a hospitals or coffins.

This hat stuff is hilarious! Yes a sap hat is probably gonna leave a mark but glad to see you guys are having fun with it and trying to make a hat a weapon. I've seen a few videos on you tube where people talk about how a baseball cap can be a deadly weapon in self defense but they always follow up with that will be in another video 😂 anyway, nice video and thanks for showing the fun side of training.

There were forces throughout history where bare handed only battalions existed.
Three cases I can think of the top of my head, Ghengis Khan had a slave army, they'd be pushed ahead of his main forces as a meat shield.
The majority of these slaves had little to no weaponry.
Another slave army, the army of Sparticus, they were more commonly armed due to the fact they were revolting in urban areas., whereas Genghis's army had less resources.
The 3rd I can think of, somewhere in the history of Muay Thai, I'm sure there were royal guard soldiers who's job it was to protect each of the royal elephants leg.
They were known for their lack of weapons, instead using their bodies as the weapon.
But I don't know if you can say these were wars fought with no weapons, but still an interesting thought.

He is absolutely correct and you dont hear that from most instructors...its your decision in that split second and going with no hesitation right into your attack ..because if you dont go now.. you have to mentally figure out and act on what is presenting itself now. ...and you gave your opponent an opportunity now twice to make that sane decision. .I learned that being the smallest kid in class but was the first to go after someone if it appeared as if we were going to fight. Boom try to hit ya like a tornado....Thats the real question you gotta ask yourself do you want to be the tornado¿ or the debris ?.......its that simple

I would probably use it to Defend against knife attacker.
To deflect blade not directly with hand. Defend against slashes.
If it has some weight to it, it could potentially help Knock it out of his hand(if he's not carefull enough).
If Attacker goes for A Dedicated Stab, If would probably Go For the Weapon, Control the Weapon, If possible I would use it As A Distraction to throw at his face while I charge Commitedly For The Knife, or grab my cap with both hands squeeze and twist(like a wet towel), and Try to Defend Against stabs, If Attacker Stabs the Cap, I could pull from one side and Attacker could lose his weapon.
(I use my cap to swap mosquitos).
#JustSayin ( My cap is more of Defense for me).

Get out of your classroom and into reality. Kali is way overated, too much talking about what if and what a fight "is". All of your zoning, vectoring crap goes out the window in a violent bar fight. Kali is the Wing Chun of the Phillippines. Great blade work, that's it
