  • EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING
An Excessive Heat Warning has been posted for the South Valley and Kern Desert areas. It is forecast through Wednesday, but I wouldn't be surprised if it runs into Thursday. Afternoon highs will reach 106-112 throughout that period. Please, respect the heat. Stay in the shade. Keep hydrated. Wear light and light colored clothing.
    MONSOONAL THREAT
There is a wave of monsoonal activity swinging out of the Baja region, Gulf of Mexico through Wednesday. Thunderstorms should be more of a focus each afternoon in the Kern desert. It will be possible to see a nocturnal thunderstorm Tuesday and Wednesday. Wednesday afternoon the monsoonal flow should push further east, drying us out. Clouds will be around each afternoon. Do not expect any thunderstorms for the Bakersfield area.
HEATWAVE #3 HAS AN END IN SIGHT
We Heatwave #3 has seen 23 triple digit days (as of this post), 12 heat stress days, 9 days of morning lows at 80-degrees or higher, plus 8 days of 109 degrees or higher. This keeps us at a Category 5 Heatwave. The last time we were at these heights were back in 1933. We are currently the tenth hottest heatwave in Bakersfield's history. That beats the heatwave set back in 2005, when we peaked at 107. Our current heatwave has topped out at 114 twice. Heatwave #3 started on June 28th. Triple digits forecast to hold through Friday; 103-112. This Saturday temperatures look to fall back to the upper 90s. We only need to hit 97 degrees or lower to end a heatwave. Otherwise, we will need two days in a row at 98 or 99 degrees to close up shop. I expect at least three days in a row of the upper 90s. That should do it by the weekend.
Late next Saturday a dip in the polar jet stream moves over northern California. This may usher enough marine air inland to end the heat wave. Right now we have the heatwave running through that Saturday. Skies will be mostly clear with windy conditions picking up in our desert areas.
