What I dont get are people who complain about new cod games yet still buy them and play. I'm playing cod since a year and I decided to play old cod games (my "newest" cod I have is black ops II lol)
You're pretty spot-on about everything you said about consumer culture, and 2023's Modern Warfare 3 is the best example of corporate greed pushing the consumer ideology. Just wish more people were smart enough not to support it and spend their money on it.
Facts. They always made a great campaign and then stuck almost religiously to the aesthetics & themes of it when making the other 2 modes so it all tied together neatly. The new ones u can run around as main characters and magic trees or whatever the hell it is. The classics always had consistency, the only weird stuff was some of the camos in BO2 but that wasn't a huge deal cause everything else was fine.
I even like the old graphics more, I am a COD vet, and I agree, I played every Call of duty up to 2012, Waw, Black Ops, MW, and not once have I bought a new Call Of Duty, only thing missing now, is all the friends I used to play split screen with...
The OG cods were made by different people for the purpose for players to enjoy the game. Now it’s owned by different people that do everything for money with SBMM, constant weapon buffs nerds/ tactics to keep you “hooked”. It’s not a fun game anymore
Not just the campaign but also the real life wars that they are inspired or based on. This is why i've always liked call of duty 4 or any games made by Treyarch up to black ops 2. Especially games made by Treyarch. All those games both took place in interesting times in history but also taught me history too. It's one of the reasons I like black ops so much is because they took all the stuff they did with the previous games , but instead of going to the modern day. They found something in the middle which they had never done before. Something between ww2 and modern warfare. A theam that had never been done before either in cod history or in any other game at the time. which is the vietnam /Cold War. That actually taught me stuff about that time period while also remaining fun. I wish to this day that they did a ww1 shooter or a Koren war shooter. They might as well at this point. Because otherwise, call of duty has completely run our ideas at this point. And I think Treyarch should be the one to do it. I've always loved there historical take on things. Even in Bo2, they had missions that took place in the 80s.
The campaign? Yes, but the best to build a good game, is character arch, you have to FEEL that you are the main protagonist, and you must have backstory to. You do not care a damn thing if you storm in and loose all your "friends" to the enemy, if you do not even know who they are. Medal of Honor, pacific assault does that terrific! You know the guys from boot camp, get their backstory and you become veteran and feel grizzled and cunning. That game felt like a full blown movie.
Cod is bought out, OG staff got fired. Sellout game. SM2 was going to save everything but of course they knew everyone would play that so they got them shut down
I feel like this money printing thing has happened to literally every franchise or series at this point. It gets bland and soulless because the companies will not take risks, and yet the decisions they do make loose them more money. The funny thing is if the companies really wanted to make the most money they should focus on making good shit, like with EA. If EA just took a few years developing Star Wars battlefront 3 they would make billions. If Disney actually had a plan with the sequels they probably could have made a Star Wars renaissance

Stopped gaming since almost 4 years, I got back on during times of COVID when there was pretty much nothing else to do. I played BO3, GTA 5, and battlefield 3 on PC to spend some time. Every game that came after wasn’t the same for me, OG Cod 4, MW2, MW3, battlefield 3 and 4 were some of my favorite games because each one contained an actual story in its campaign almost like a movie where you’d want to know what happens in the next movie. And they had you feeling like you were a part of it, now it all just came down to the skins, trash emotes and spending of credits. I don’t know if it’s the influence of social media or kids that were stuck in their iPad and iPhones since 6-7 years old but that’s just the way I see it🤷♂️
Cods prime for campaign and multiplayer was from cod4-black ops2 nothing will top the golden age of call of duty nothing and the sad thing is that the game we knew and loved is dead sadly i actually will go back and play those games cuz the campaign was so good and well thought out and researched ya know

What happened to the creativity and artistic integrity the classic games had? It’s simple they know they could crap on a disc and label it “Call of duty” and it will sell like hot cakes. They can do no wrong in profits and they know it.

The MW2's No Russian, MW3's gas terrorist attack, MW19's depiction of war crimes, didn't make COD drop off. The true cause of COD's downfall is merely greed and laziness. Shareholders and Activision CEOs milking a franchise dry however it can.

I have been saying this for a while they need good campaigns again but its not necessarily the campaign in a gokd story, back in the day mw2 love came from the heartbreak of losing ghost bo1 was the most brutal graphic best looking cod yet at the time and we just had the MOST START STUDDED cast in a cod game like we had ICE CUBE AS A TEAMMATE the old school well thought out campaigns just set the vibe set the tone for the game and made multiplayer have some actual sick looking maps that made sense to the time and wars they were in then zombies just build off something we had never seen before but the storyline died now zombies is so much more boring and doesn't have that attention grabbing fun it used to because the story is shallow easier and less of a community discussion to figure out it's just objective and people over a headset telling you everything they need to go back to the roots of setting uip the hook to reel us in becayse all they use now is our nostalgia and just prey on us wanting the old more effort type of game they do specific things to get us hyped up for the game but in reality it's nothing that different cod just doesn't have story anymore it's too basic almost like a typical b grade war movie
Even when they do try to establish a theme and atmosphere, every year they immediately ruin it with whacky skins and shit. Like why even bother to theme the games anymore?

I can only play 1 or 2 rounds in call of duty before I turn it off and take a break from it. The gameplay loop just isn't fun and after one or 2 games I feel like I've played it all. Same with fortnite and same with mortal Kombat tbh. Most of the games that are most popular like those 3 just have such a repetitive loop that is completely uninteresting and idk how people play them non stop.

If they honestly changed the name of the game and and kept everything else I’d have no problem with it. I wouldn’t buy it but I just wouldn’t be as frustrated over it. The problem is that I have played the past ones and I still have the same expectations. I keep going back to world at war and remembering how that made me feel then I might see a clip from the latest games and I can’t help to feel the disappointment when I see it’s the same series that at one time made me want to learn more about history and the conflicts into consumer/crowd pleaser shit. Last cod I ever enjoyed was BO3 and that was purely for zombies and outside of that BO2. But from Cod United offensive to BO2 and looking at today I can’t believe this is the same series I once cared about and got all my friends and I to actually be interested and put down the game at times and learn more about history and do our own research and obviously today that doesn’t have the same effect on kids.
Look at older Call of Duty titles like COD1-2-3-4 and compare them to the newer titles. You will see the difference. It went from 'made by gamers for gamers' to 'created by corporation greed for consumers.'

I 100% agree that the campaign is the identity of the game, in those games you had to pass the campaign first to even play multiplayer or zombies.
