These DIY videos that you produce are among my faves. I got a Stew Mac membership over a year ago, and have slowly been collecting luthier tools for basic set ups and fixes, like this. I've also purchased a few good luthier tools from Amazon. Thank you so much for all of your instructional videos, Dylan!

The tool for finishing the fret is magic. I've found in Europe a Stewmac tools dealer and order one for one of my guitar. It's easy and efficient. Thanks Dylan, I learn a lot about setup, finishing and pickups on your channel as Phil Mcknight. Both of your are making great content ! Cheers from France

But how about guitars where they don't clip the ends of the tang, which then sticks out as well if the neck shrinks? (Looking at you, Fender MIM Player Tele!)

I satin all my necks the same way, 1200 then some finishes need a little 2000. Nice results. Steel wool sucks.

Grey Scotchbrite is great for scuffing up the back of the neck finish as well…!

A tip I learned from playing competitive billiards, is to take a few light passes with a green Scotchbrite…it makes the pool cue (and back of guitar neck) nice and slick…

This may seem odd but in the past I have used a plain old brown grocery bag cut to fit of course instead of fine grit sand paper and achieved great results

For the bottom edge of the fret sticking out a bit and being sharp, take a thin blade like an xacto blade and peel up the metal bit to make it worse, then do the flat file thing and it will remove it more fully

As usual, Dylan, you are a great source of guitar technology. My only peeve is that for all the money one has to fork over for a PRS, it had better not need any corrections. Thanks to you, we can now make up the difference in quality between high end, high priced guitars, and the ones that most of us can actually buy. Thanks brother!!

Great info. I just did a vintage Acoustic with that file and finished the edges, with various Grit's of micro-mesh = it's smooth like butter. Feels like a custom-shop. I also do the back of my necks with micro-mesh and either: Tru Oil, Feed & Wax or Music Nomad guitar polish = silky smooth Satin finish. oNe LovE from NYC

I love the stew mac file. Did two friends guitars (a Yamaha pacifica and a squire strat) and they were so happy they paid me. The file turned an accidental profit 😂
I also did the frets on Sigma acustic that i picked up for less than 100 bucls on the deal of the day from GC. Nut filing, removed bridge, and sanded to lower action a bit amd the fret filing made that cheap guitar play so comfortably. Its awesome what can be done to a cheap guitar to make it play well.

Here's a question. I REALLY don't like the "stickiness" of most high-gloss neck finishes. Can this be solved using your light sanding? Thanks for all that you do for the guitar community!

    • @michael_caz_nyc
      @michael_caz_nyc 8 месяцев назад

Yes - use very high grit's like 1000, 1200 and 1600. (little by little with gentle pressure) Then apply Feed & Wax = silky satin finish similar to a Music Man neck.

What do you use for nut files? I was looking at the stew Mac sets and they don’t have a set for 11 gauge strings 😢

Saw one of these PRS SE Silver Sky at a local GC a few days ago. The neck just seemed cheap. The tuners were sort of Mickey Mouse also. For that price, I would just find a good Fender Strat or Nashville Tele, new or used. I couldn't see (or feel with my hands) anything special about these at all. Way over-hyped IMHO.

A lot of mom and pop stores aren't going to have perfect humidity in them or if they do, when a bunch of folks walk through the door, it undercuts that effort.

  • @ToneDeth.

Would you ordinarily tape the pickups? I know you don't like steel wool because all the shavings etc will get in the pickup, but what about from the filing? or fret leveling process? are these particles less concerning?

I just mailed my PRS McCarty black and gold back to Sweetwater so that they could fix my fret ends that are also sticking out the side. If I bend my strings, too far, they hook over the ends of the frets, leaving me with a five string guitar.

I commented on one of your other videos a while back ago and asked you if you like noiseless pickups you said they were okay but you aren't a big fan of them I have an American ultra Stratocaster and I've only had for about 8 months and I bought it brand new if I were to switch those out what would you recommend i like the blues and Rock and even some hard rock but I also like to fender clean sound you get so I wouldn't want to lose any of that what would you suggest and how hard of a job would it be to switch them out or what should it cost to have somebody do it cuz I would be scared to death to try if you could let me know I would appreciate it thank you 🤘

Think Stew Mac just lowered the price on the fret files too. I live in a dry climate and it has been my most used tool, if we aren't counting screwdrivers. Best $15 you'll spend.

Please tape the pickups if you're going to file the fret ends!
The metal dust from the frets it'll stick to the magnets in the pickups.
Also, make your life easier and just remove the string before doing it too

I'd still worry about some stainless steel frets (since any 400 steel is definitely magnetic) and the file itself though. Better safe than sorry
