  • Why Marko Hietala left Nightwish?
    0:20 - General context
1:28 - State of music industry today (reason 1)
    4:28 - Need of validation (reson 2)
After 20 years playing, singing and co-creating music with Nightiwsh, Marko Hietala decides to leave the band. This information has been published simultaneously via both parties' social media channels. For me as a great fan of Nightwish and Marko’s musical talent since 2000’s and someone who had a privilege to meet him in person, document his festival and club shows, record an interview with him - this news came as a bitter pillow that is hard to swallow.
Reasons for Marko’s decision have been stated in his resignation letter published on his as well as Nightiwish social media. In this video I would like to share some highlights as well as provide additional information that I was able to gather while studying this question myself. I am not trying to speculate and pretend I know all the answers but rather share my observations and thoughts around them.

It's so disrespectful, stage lighting is 30 times the work and 30 times the cost anyone else is putting in the venue without the VIP benefits and privileges others have and it's so easy to suffer from burn out and it's only very recently stage crew are being recognised at all.

The other concern I have, is Tuomas said in an interview a few years ago, that he wouldn't be able to take another member of the band leaving. That low key to me, sounds like he would disband Nightwish if that were to happen, and Marko leaving is such a huge blow to the band. Obviously we all care about Marko and his mental health, and it breaks my heart knowing he was struggling badly with depression. He had reasons other than covid of course, with the industry itself, but it definitely has contributed to this. The past year has been so tough on the entire world, and while we still have a long ways to go, we'll eventually get through this. Maybe even someday Marko may return if Tuomas keeps the band going.

Everyone wants to speculate, to read in between the lines, on Marko's resignation statement. I say take it for face value. Marko may indeed have other reasons for leaving that he's not shared. That's his prerogative. What he's shared is enough for me. He wants to take a step back, evaluate where he's been and where he's going from here. He doesn't feel validated by a music system that shifts profits that should rightfully go to musicians into outsiders' hands...some of which would kill him or imprison him for the music he makes. He asks not to place blame on Tuomas, and I respect that. I don't think he would have added that if it wasn't true. I look back on the smiles of joy on his face at the most recent Nightwish shows he performed at, and I don't think this comes from any angst within the group. I hope his reinvention involves him starting his own, fair promotion company. If you don't like what's out there, make it better yourself!

Only a day or two -- maybe the same day Marko left -- Nightwish fired their North American booking agent, John Finburg.
What I would not be surprised about is if Mr. Finburg was fired, for precisely the reasons Marko states why he left the band -- which is the fact that Nightwish felt that Finburg was taking more money for his services than he deserved, money they felt should have gone to the band.

Regardingn the "middle ages" it has been officially registered that in the first half of 2019 over 4.8 million vinyl physical records have been sold (which was almost a 40% increase compared to 2018), so there is nothing bad abotu getting a physical record) The biggest sicret that they don't tell us at school is that nobody really cares about us that much, everyone has their own things and this can liberate those affraid of the public opinion or who is dependent on the oppinions of others. Most important, in my humble oppinion, is to be in good terms with ourselves internally, making sure we are happy and content with ourselves. Otehrs don't know us entirely and thus should judge us. Even our loved ones don't know us completely, so why would they have a valid reason to make oppinions abotu us? :) Wishing you strength to overcome the depressive states of mind and remember that there is no other person like you out there and you are unique in your own way and that's what matters. Much love!

It is deeply sad that artists suffer like this during the pandemic. It is also unfortunate that streaming companies treat them like this. I pay Spotify 10 euros/month and I was hoping that a respectful part of my subscription, reaches to the artists I enjoy. I hope this gets better.

I've seen some comments about Marko quitting Nightwish being a great loss to metal world. I beg to differ. Reading through his letter makes me sad. To be suffering those things for so many years must be very painful for him. I'm glad for his solo career, too. It's a refreshing take after his career at Nightwish. Marko wasn't the original bassist for Nightwish. Yes, he has been an important major component of their sound for the last twenty years but so were Tarja and Jukka and even Annette. I think Nightwish will continue as long as Tuomas wants it to. Their sound is already evolving with the latest album. Finding the right bassist to replace Marko will continue that evolution.
Then again, maybe Troy will take up the bass. He plays everything else :)

Interesting video. The resignation statement doesn't make as much sense to me as it does to you, but you make some valid points. In the end, I hope (and trust) he knows what's best for him. I do kind of cherish some hope that "reinventing" doesn't necessarily mean never returning to Nightwish, as I find it hard to believe he's that far disconnected from his path/'walden'. Of course, this perception is based purely on his previous public appearances and words. No way for us to know what's going on inside him other than speculation.

I think it's also important to point out that Marko is originally from Savo. Savonian people tend to have a particular way with words, like a Monty Python-esque ways of saying things and not saying them at the same time. Talking in riddles, and using complex metaphores. Having that in mind made it easier to actually understand the subtext of his resignation letter, where you can tell there's no ill intention or animosity towards his former bandmates. He's just angry at the system, and now this free time made him fully understand about this whole situation.

I feel that the reasons given are probably more psychological than anything else. The economic reasons are more "the camel that broke the camel's back.". The current pandemic, has forced performing artists to re-assess and prevented the majority from doing what they want, love, and more than that need... which is too perform, more than any other situation in the past two decades. Yes, things have changed in the music industry, and there maybe resentment at that fact... but many, many artists still continue regardless, why? Because of the "love" that they feel, either for their art... or that they receive from their fans. Getting cut off from the later, has a bigger impact on some than others. His resignation, letter gave him chances, the chance to highlight the general situation and to reflect upon his own. I sincerely hope that he is able to take this time to reflect and re-connect... "take a break" so to speak, for as long as this pandemic lasts.. which unfortunately maybe a few years yet, the fallout probably even longer, as normality slowly restores. . As for Nightwish as a band? I think that depends mostly on how they feel... the disruption maybe too much. I hope not. Realistically, a "touring hiatus" gives ALL the members a chance for a "breather", pursue creative elements that are not directly Nightwish-related. Whether the recording company are stupid enough to force them to do so at the moment as a band, could be the deal-breaker. As fans we must must be supportive and more than anything, patient. :(

I empathize with Marko's struggle with depression, having been there myself. I hope he finds a way to ward it off for good!
Sadly, 99.9% of us don't have the luxury of being able to take a year off to think, search for validation and then take another year off to reinvent ourselves. Not to diminish the seriousness of Marko's issues - I just mean to point out that we can and should use our voices and votes to structure society in a way that brings help to more who need it, not just for a few who are wealthy enough to afford it.

I don't know about all the reasons but I know quite enough about bipolar syndrom and the need for validation. I don't think Marko will read this thread but or if my validation is of any value but let's say this: I became a published novelist in France last year, and as far as musical inspiration is concerned, Nightwish is just up there. I can say, if not for Marko and the guys, I would never had been able to write my books with the syle I'm praised for. Because writers need muses to talk to them. Sometimes those muses sing.

Sounds to me like Marko Hietala would be happy as an Independent artist with a RUclips Channel and a home studio. Because of the internet and advances in home technology Marko and every music artist doesn't need to be a part of a corporation anymore. I'm 100% certain that if Marko were to create his own RUclips Channel and release music of all kinds he will find a following and make 100% of the profits by doing everything himself. i bet Marko would make more take home pay than he ever earned in Nightwish by making his own music on his own.
That and if Marko reunites with Tarja to make a song or two..imagine that hype and all of the profits made from such a collaboration.

He can join the likes of Charlotte Wessel of former Delain. She also has a patron with more than 600 patrons. The music industry has changed so much and artists should tap into social media to assist them.
It may also help if he sells his music directly to his fans. I follow a Chinese-American artist China Mac,who recently swore off all streaming and sells music directly to his fans. According to him, he has made more money than he ever did through streaming because the middle man is gone.

Actually this could as well sound like a man retiring. For example, when I feel a change or an end of something coming near that I loved I start to cling on it, kind of praying that it wouldn't change. To send a wish to the sky sounds like someone who feels the necessity for a change and doesn't want it to be true and begs for the situation to become better again. It can even sound desparate and that you want to summon your wish to become true. Until you finally realise that there's no other way than doing what you actually didn't want to do. Especially when there are emotional and psychical problems play along. For me this makes it even more sad and I'm feeling sorry for him, because this abrupt end shows that there may be inner struggle and a lot of sadness in him. Poor Marco and also poor Tuomas. I feel pitty for them both (and also the rest of the people involved) and hope they find the strength to get back to happiness.

Sometimes an artist reaches the end of the road for inspiration to carry on making music. It's about money, but it's also about creative fulfillment.
Many famous artists shut the door on either making music or getting a big paycheck.
Agnetha & Frida of ABBA virtually vanished from recording or touring in the 80's...
Robert Plant refused a Led Zeppelin reunion... Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple in '93 to play acoustic folk w/ his wife in Blackmore's Night... Steve Perry of Journey opted to retire from music in 1998 for decades... Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi bailed on his megaplatinum band & has declined to return.
And I can understand their point... if u are unhappy in ur situation of the music industry... the option to quit is there to take.

With NW's H2N album, Marco was frustratingly kept in the corner overall....and that they should worry about someone that immensely talented could have quiet resentment build up to the point of leaving the band. I hate to say I was right....but I was. Tuomas made an unforced error letting Troy D in as a full time member and taking over many singing parts Marco should have had IMHO. As a leader, you have to know your team's strengths....and Marco's voice AND song writing abilities should never have been pushed aside. He was too important.
