    This drives me up a wall. I crochet, and I’m really good at it, because I’ve done it for decades. Because what I make doesn’t look all jacked up, people doubt my blindness. What they don’t realize is:
    1. My experience helps me do it.
    2. Yarn crafting is tactile.
    3. I have to use visual aids.
    I guess a tongue and cheek response would be, hey, you don’t think I’m blind? Give me the keys to your car and let’s go for a ride! Whee!

    I remember getting the accusation of how can I type and use a computer if I’m blind. I try to make a video or two addressing the topic but sometimes I do get upset about it. Sometimes I wish I could telepathically send my vision to another person so they can see exactly what I see for a certain amount of time and then they can literally see that I can’t see much.

    • @CaylawithaC
      @CaylawithaC  3 года назад +1

      Yes that one is so annoying! I see that a lot online. What really gets me is that I think most people probably type on a computer keyboard without looking, so I don’t know why that is so surprising to them

    The problem is the way media depicts the stereotypical “blind” character. The general public have zero concept of vision being a spectrum. They hear “legally blind” and just blank. They don’t know what that even means.
    What I find interesting is that these same people would not tell a member of the deaf community that they aren’t dead just because they wear hearing aids or have some usable hearing.
    I have heard trolls tell wheelchair bound people who can move their legs that they are “faking it.” Having no understanding of the situation people truly inhabit.

    • @CaylawithaC

    I get this with my students all the time. I had a student who had very low vision with 20/200 in one eye and less that 20/400 in the other. The better eye was legally blind while the poorer eye had only light perception on some days. You're determined by your best eye so with either eye he was legally considered blind and required my services AND that of the O&M specialist! In one of his classes, the teacher thought he was just slacking off his work. She was not understanding me or him. I was walking to class with him and one of his friends was singing outdoors. I had him stop and listen so he yelled across the courtyard at him. The para yelled, "I told you he could see! He's faking it!" I started to explain how kids with low vision fill in visual gaps and how he heard his friend but I decided not to waste my breath on her ignorance. I save my explanations for people who ask intelligent questions and want to be educated. I appreciate your videos because there are some home living skills I wanted to show a high school student.

    Great video. This is such an important topic. I get told all the time that I don’t look blind. All the time people think I can see because I wear glasses, but in reality, I’m totally blind. I was born 3 months early, and because of this I was diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity. Growing up, I had no vision in my right eye, and very little in my left eye. I was legally blind, and started wearing glasses at the age of 2. I used a CC-TV to read print, and I also learned braille. 9 years ago I lost the rest of my sight due to sudden onset of Glaucoma, and now I’m totally blind. Upon losing the rest of my sight I tried not to wear my glasses since I couldn’t see anymore, but I had worn them for so long, it felt so weird without them. I just decided to keep wearing them. Then 3 years ago, I had to have surgery on my right eye, and I had to get a prosthetic cornea for the right eye. Now wearing glasses feels like I have another protective layer to my right eye since a large part of it is now removed. I’ve gotten so used to wearing my glasses that life just seems strange without them. Thanks so much for reaching out.

I told him I would agree with him. However, people say "you don't look blind". Once while grocery shopping with my Husband, someone tossed a coin toward me and it hit my foot... But I have been accused of faking blind when I comment online. Remarks like: "stop faking blind! Because if you are blind, how are you typing? Or are you just copying and pasting? "
    People further become confused because I have a very visual brain, so I can talk about colors and visual aspects, and that seems to throw them off. I also have a love for photography which often questions people's concept of blindness.. I don't know. People have the weirdest notions. I think most people really have no idea what the heck seeing means anyway. They automatically think that seeing just means looking at something with their eyes, when in actuality, there's a lot more involved. And everyone sees differently.
    Anyway, keep up the good work.

    This does point to why I don’t typically refer to myself as blind. I am legally blind. I see less than 10% of “normal”. (With correction.)
    Because the “normal” people are ignorant and trolls gotta troll, I generally just call myself legally blind or visually impaired. They don’t understand legally blind but it seems to defuse them if they are looking to attack me for my word choice.

    OK I know you have blind ambition and I see what you’re trying to say however I don’t know any other blind people but you which is strange because I get most of my information from you or the Internet but you’re the single best source for blind information. I do believe most blind people have to have a good sense of humor and that sighted people just don’t get the fact that you have to remember where 2000 separate items are around the house I do really good until somebody comes to visit and starts moving things. I do have a box in my house that is where if they find anything on the floor or it seems to be where it shouldn’t be they put it in the box and then I review the box of stuff after they leave. However when people talk to me about being blind the one thing I tell them is I’m going to tell you a story that’s going to change the the rest of your life you will never do something the same way again if you can handle this I’ll tell you. So when they agree I tell them the thing in life that upsets me the most is stickers on fruit. You are simply wonderful and I will tell you what my father always said and that is there are more horses asses than horses. Don’t let these people get you down we may be in the dark because of things that happen but they are in the dark because they’re jerks :-) and you have to be sorry for them.

    • @melkatts
      @melkatts 3 года назад

      I'm blind, so I'll answer your questions.
      Yes, blind people can cook. A lot of states provide in-home independent living training for blind people to take, so they can learn how to cook, sow, do laundry, travel, use computers, use smart phones, etc. Some blind people who have lost their sight just adapt without any kind of training. They're awesome like that.
      Yes, blind people can read. Cayla uses a screen reader on her computer & her phone, so the text is read to her. A lot of blind people use braille to read. I still have enough vision at this point to use a screen magnifier on my computer to read what's on it. If it is something really lengthy, I'll use a screen reader, because my eyes do get tired very easily.

    • @Positivekitten
      @Positivekitten 3 года назад +1

      Absolutely blind people can cook. We are not helpless and there are plenty of adaptive items we can use in the kitchen. There are blind professional chefs, one of them won Top Chef a few years back and runs her own restaurant in Houston. Yes, we read too. Depending on our level of vision loss as well as our personal preferences, we can read print with magnification, many blind people read Braille, and a lot of us use audiobooks which yes, we do consider reading.

      Yes I can cook. There are different tools to help blind people cook such as a talking meat thermometer, and I use my hands a lot more than most people do. And yes I can read. For most of my life I was able to read large print so I learned to read the traditional way. Now I use a screen reader so everything is read to me and I can also read braille

And you got the remember those people making comments are in their comfort zone behind a computer screen or their cell phone screen. I would not have known you are blind unless you said so. And I know you wouldn't have talking devices just to help them and a cane for a fashion you can't get those things easily they have to be prescribed.
