I honestly prefer that fictitious name to the “Germanisches Reich der deutschen Nation”, as the scenario laid out in The Man in the High Castle is so improbable and outlandish that involving the Germans, or even the nazis in our timeline / reality, would feel surreal, and would undermine the plot. I stopped watching the series some time ago, but I feel that, even in my limited scope, Germans and the real Reich aren’t mentioned frequently. When characters travel to Europe to visit cities like Berlin (Germania), there are little to no ties to the Berlin we know. The conflicts in German-occupied North America are mostly ideological: Americans struggle against other Americans, whereas in the Japanese occupation zone, there is an acute sense of national division, with the Americans directly serving under Japanese characters, many of whom receive considerable time on air. I’m not an authority on this, but I would assume they did this because media like Man in the High Castle is easer to be marketed to Western European nations, and Germans might find it more difficult to watch if they were directly mentioned as the enemy too frequently.

@@richhh9000 Historical fact. "Severely mentally and physically disabled people, as well as those perceived to have disabilities, were targeted because of Nazi beliefs that disabled people were a burden both to society and to the state. From 1939 to 1941 the Nazis carried out a programme of ‘euthanasia’, known as the T4 programme [...] In 1933 the ‘Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring’ was passed, allowing for the forced sterilisation of people with conditions such as epilepsy, schizophrenia and alcoholism. Prisons, nursing homes, asylums, care homes for the elderly and special schools were targeted to select people for sterilisation. [...] In 1939 the killing of disabled children and adults began. All children under the age of three who had illnesses or a disability, such as Down’s syndrome, or cerebral palsy were targeted under the T4 programme. [...] Following the outbreak of war in September 1939 the programme was expanded. Adults with disabilities, chronic illnesses, mental health problems and criminals who were not of German origin were included in the programme. Six killing centres were established to speed up the process - the previous methods of killing people by lethal injection or starvation were deemed too slow to cope with large numbers of adults. @Bruh Moment Sourced above. And there are numerous well-researched history books and websites out there, just type 'aktion t4' into your preferred search engine and you'll see. Disability discrimination was the norm back then, the Nazis just took it to its logical conclusion. Before the second world war, eugenics in the form of forced sterilisation of people with hereditary conditions thought undesirable was actually quite common in many developed countries (including the US and Canada). Winston Churchill was a proponent, however the bill to introduce it into UK law was thankfully defeated in parliament in 1913. Germany was a latecomer to the idea of compulsory sterilisation, it being outlawed under the Weimar Republic, and only introduced under Hitler. But within a few years of its introduction, preventing the disabled from breeding was no longer enough; their very existence had to be terminated.

The saddest scene in the show. Never should those who suffer from genetic illnesses feel they are a burden on the state. "Greater Nazi Reich" is a poor translation of "Großdeutsches Reich".
I have to think that's an Americanism of some sort.

@@actualmemology7090 Seems like a bit of an overkill.. "Drag on the state"? Historical accuracy or fiction? Not trying to sound like a wehraboo, just thinking outside the box.
[...] It is estimated that close to 250,000 disabled people were murdered under the Nazi regime." www.hmd.org.uk/learn-about-the-holocaust-and-genocides/nazi-persecution/disabled-people/
@Bruh Moment ok but the Nazi army killed people who were disabled, they a targeted them
@Bruh Moment Sourced above.
I never realized the German troopers were wearing East German camouflage. That’s a super cool use of military surplus not gonna lie. Kinda messes with the MP5’s they were carrying though... shoulda used some MP40s
MP5 is a German design (West German) so it does make sense, the MP-40 would have been out of date and out of service by the time Thomas did this.
I understand it is German, I just think it’s out of place to mix the MP5 with the East German camo and would rather see something that matches it at least a little more closely, as the East Germans could have used MP40s (they had many)
@@gemini_1085 I think the MP-44 (or STG-44) would have been the better alternative. A still rather excellent rifle that was probably going to phase out the 40's anyways.
You have to remember when Thomas became a young adult it wasn't the 40's anymore. I think this took place in the late 50's to early 60's.
I understand that as well. They still had more options to pick from, like the CETME G3 or something like that. The Japanese in the show were still using 1940’s type 99 arisakas and type 38’s, so the MP40 would have been right at home with other WW2 guns
