Potent symbolism of the lights on the statue going out in sequence. First the lights in her pedestal, symbolising how the foundation of the nation she represents is crumbled and torn apart; then the lights in her crown/head, signifying the death of independent thought and freedom of belief; and finally, the torch, though broken and sinking, still glows feebly as it disappears beneath the water to represent the dying of hope and spirit, yet still the vital spark of resistance may remain.

I don't think alternate realities nor time travel are possible. Hard determinism sounds the most logical and consistent, not relying on any near magical element we imply do not understand yet.
It was this scene which made me realize the sheer magnitude of the battle the resistance had in front of them. Not only would they have to defeat the resources of the Japanese Empire and Nazi Reich, but the millions of children and adults who had been raised in the Reich. They didn't know freedom or the United States, and would loyally fight to preserve the Reich. Not only would the resistance be fighting for freedom, but for the souls and minds of North America.
As someone from Poland I can assure you this is pure fiction. In reality, if we can talk about the reality here as it is a movie, but conquering souls and minds is always almost impossible. You learned it occupying Iraq and Afganistan. In Vietnam. We learned on the receiving end. We were occupied for 134 years. With laws forbidding us to speak our language, practice our religion, have our culture. For generations. The language, the customs, the culture, the religion, they all survived. Shortly after were faced with two world wars and USSR occupation that took more deecades. And we are still here. They could never win our souls and minds. It would be exactly the same for America.
@@paulb7207your opportunism is greatly appreciated, but if it was to be believed, Slavs were to be re-educated or removed from society.
When I read this, the somber music of the scene started playing, and sent a chill down my spine, and made me think how close we are to this in the west. 😐
