Glad you loved Dragon's Dogma! I've been singing its praises ever since the PS3. When I discovered they took a lot of inspiration from Berserk, I fell even more in love with it. Those long incantations are directly inspired by Schierke requiring the protection of those around her to incant undisturbed.

@@petitknightcreations7431 Very few games take the risk of long waits on magic, mainly strategy games do this with the punishment of having it cancelled. Biggest difference is that it's the closest I've seen magic be devastating that you just don't get most times.

A few tips for new players:
1: when you arrive at Gran Soren, check into the inn, this will give you the fast-travel stone
2: the game directs you to the pawn guild. Once there, you’re given a quest to go UNDER the guild. You can accept it, but DONT DO THE QUEST! If you do, upon completion you’ll be locked out of the ‘Witch in the Wood’ quest, which foreshadows the end of the game, and has several quests attached to it. Instead, fast travel BACK to the starting area, and head for the woods.
3: if the bandits along the way are kicking your ass, run past them (although they CAN be beaten by low-level characters, especially archers and mages, you just need to keep your distance!)
4: accept all the dumb-looking ‘bounty’ quests telling you to ‘kill x number of undead/harpies/chimeras/ghosts!’ Reason? You’re going to kill those enemies ANYWAY during your playthrough. Accept the bounty and you’ll get a nice, unexpected influx of gold from time to time as you complete the bounties.
5: IF you accept an escort mission, travel to the mission end point FIRST, then leave a ‘port crystal’ which are found around the game. Travel back to gran soren, accept the quest, then fast travel BACK to the escort finish point. BAM! You’re done without risk to your escort of any kind.
Finally: there’s a port crystal under the pawn guild which you’ll find during that mission. There’ll also be a quest to escort someone to a ‘healing spring!’ Go to the merchants, stock up on empty jars, then travel to the spring. Put down a port crystal and LEAVE IT THERE! (You’ll get more port crystals!). Not only will you easily complete this quest, but you and your pawns can fill jars with spring water, which HEAL YOUR ENTIRE PARTY! You’ll have to move around the jars to different pawns to stay under the weight limit, but you’ll come back here again and again for free party healing.
There’s another Port Crystal on the way to the springs, at a house on the side of a hill, surrounded by harpies. Get that one for your OTHER quest needs.
Oh yeah: but a lamp, GET INSIDE BEFORE DARK EARLY GAME!! Nightime is no joke in DD, and you need to get strong before you handle the night’s challenges.
I can honestly say, my first play through of DD, remains one of my favorite gaming experiences EVER! Its a special game….and after you beat the dragon, KEEP PLAYING! The game’s not over!!
On the initial trip to Gran Soren, you can jump on the oxen’s back and kick to make them go faster. This, along with goblin attacks will lower their health, which you can raise by demanding’healing’ from your mage. You’ll get there a bit quicker, and the real game can start.

4 is what I think is the hang up for a lot of people that I think makes them think the game is way more tedious than it is, I feel like too many people play this game like other rpgs and do one side quest at a time, so they're going out doing these hunting side quests trying to kill these enemies rather than just accepting them and having them in the background while you do other things.

The most unique mechanic of this game is the grab button. All characters can grab anything. You can pick up objects in the environment and throw them at enemies. You can pick up enemies and hit them, or throw them at other enemies.
But the best thing is if you grab a giant monster, you start climbing them. The game turns into Shadow of the colossus.
There's nothing cooler than jumping a chasm to grab onto a dragon in mid flight and start stabbing them until they fall to the ground.

Red classes (Fighter, Warrior, Mystic Knight and Assassin) can also grapple enemies. While grappled, enemies take double damage from any attack. It's pretty gnarly when you pin down a Saurian and rip their tail off with a single kick.

One of my pawns leapt over the expanse, grabbed me, and tossed me to safety as they fell and returned to their own world. Shit's epic when it all goes right.

I've always felt like the best review a game can have is a trusted friend's recommendation, so having Mike explain and sell the game to Casen is really perfect. I've played a few hours of Dragons Dogma but you've completely sold me on going back to it and playing much much more. I hope you both do hundreds of these reviews, it's really fantastic.

The combat of Dragon's Dogma is the funnest action RPG combat I've ever had. The spells are pretty dang cool too and when I feel too sluggish to cast I switch to magic archer and the satisfaction of the bow skills is incredible. I agree the spells are very satisfying and feel great to cast, I have to say the the most Beautiful spells I've ever seen are FF9's and Lost Odyssey's).
It's really so sad the Dragon's Dogma MMO never came out here. Some good modders you can find on RUclips can show you how it's like.

Due to seeing some crazy gifs six months later I decided to revisit the game, and I'm so glad that I did. The demo was just really bad. Cluttered as hell UI that couldn't really be adjusted and characters that simply would not shut up. Plus, you didn't have access to any of the cool spells that really made the game for me.

The story really isn't much to write home about but it really is a great game. Everyone talks about how good the battle system is, and it is. But I loved the exploration aspect the most. Imagine the love the man feels for this game that he made such a fantastic game as Devil May Cry V in order to be allowed to make the sequel to his passion project. There's an AMAZING interview in which he tells the story of how many years he had this project in mind, since the times of street fighter II more or less.

To this day I'm sad that no other game has attempted to recreate the Pawn system, the ways in which they can learn and function feels like game development black magic, even though I have researched it and understand how they function now, I still adore how convincing they can be as AI companions you care about if taught/setup well.
Glad to see you got into this fantastic gem of an RPG, sometimes I can't believe it came out the same year as Skyrim, and somehow even in all of it's mediocrity Skyrim was the popular one.

I've heard it described as "the best 7/10 game I've ever played" and that sums up my thoughts on it when looking at it while trying to be unbiased. THAT BEING SAID... I freaking love this game despite all of its jank and squandered potential and cut ideas which only have traces left in the final product (we'll never get to fight on the moon ); ). I put 2 playthroughs in doing everything and getting the platinum trophy because it's so darn fun. I hope DD2 can realize all of what DD1 was trying to accomplish.

This game has my favorite character creator of all time. Over the years I’ve created every fantasy race of every type, dwarf, halfling, hobbit, elf, orc, goblin, etc. You can really do anything with it if you put the time in. The only negative is they only give you one save slot so you can’t have multiple creations in the game at once, or I’d own all the top pawns in the game.

This game is so good. It's slightly imperfect in a lot of ways, but has so many incredible ideas jammed into it. The lore is great, the design is great, the characters are great. I'm hoping that Dragons Dogma 2 will smooth out the rough edges and become the perfection that this game came so close to.

Agreed. The number of incredible ideas more than make up for the imperfections.
Like I had an issue with inventory; when you hire a new pawn, there’s no way to quickly/seamlessly transfer the inventory of a current pawn that you’re releasing. Silly small things like that.

What the game doesn't tell you and a lot of people miss it:
    - When you are playing a class and you level up with it, you get stats, but you gain stats based on waht class you leveled up as. Melee classes get more Strength and Stamina/ HP, if you have leveled up as a mage, you get different stats, why is this important?
    - You have a maximum level cap, you can't level forever, when you hit that cap, your stats are based on the classes you have leveled during those levels. You have leveld as a pure mage and switch to Warrior after the cap to try it out? You can sort of get by, but you won't even eb nearly as effective. If you level as a Warrior / Fighter through the levels, you will have a TON more Strength and other stats to go along for the classes and you will be significantly stronger.
    - It's not the best system, but something to keep in mind when you are playing the game.

This game is in my top three from gen 7. It was actually my most anticipated prior to release, but then when I played the (absolutely terrible) demo, it really disappointed me and actually made the game drop off my radar. Six months later I noticed a bunch of crazy spell gifs on a gaming forum that were showing off spells you did not have access to in the demo...I decided to revisit.
So glad that I did, because there hasn't been another game before, or after yet that was so good at simulating a spellcaster. This is the only game that I've played where you truly feel like a powerful Wizard. The animations and feedback are likely the biggest reason, but it still felt so good to play. A controller is a must though, since that doesn't translate through mouse and keyboard if playing on PC.
    Cannot wait for DD2.

I will say, that this review, although great, omits a big element of the game that I would want people to know, which is just how satisfying exploration is in this game. Seeking out every little nook and cranny of the main game and especially Bitterblack Isle will reward you with cool fights and unique locales and just little details that make you feel immersed in the place. I'm gonna go play it for the 11th time now.

One of the interesting things about the pawn system is that it learns behaviors, strategies, and quest knowledge from both you and the other players it plays with. So if your pawn finished a quest with someone else that you haven't yet, it'll help guide you. If it Knows the weakness of an enemy it'll tell you it.

When you guys were talking about how you grew up during the big LotR boom, that reminded me of the version of Strider that I grew up with. So when I see the name Strider, the first thing I think of is Strider Hiryu from the Strider games. I am a bit older than you guys, growing up in the big Ninja craze of the late 80s and 90s. When I read Fellowship of the Ring in high school, the entire time I was literally picturing a badass looking anime Cyber Ninja traveling around with the hobbits. Pretty ridiculous from any other perspective, I'm sure. But this was before the LotR movies came out so I didn't really have much visual aid and inserted what I knew best.
(as a side note, I did the same kind of thing when I read The Princess Bride in school as well. I imagined "The man in the black mask" Wesley as a ninja, not a Zorro type character.)

I remember reading the breakdown of making the game from Gamasutra, the game was only ever 60% done when it originally released. It’s a miracle it caught a grip in fans and was able to do the expansion. This expansion was much more focused and really benefitted from leaning in to what worked about the base game. I hold out hope that DD2 can bridge the divide and carry over the open world questing and scope of that with the new title but the mark they made on fantasy combat will always be the selling point. I remember fighting a beholder and it had some magic attack spike that came up out of the ground: if you grabbed onto the monster it would accidentally stab itself in the big eye and get disabled. Skyrim just didn’t have anything on this. In a way the game was the anti-Skyrim.

I agree with everything, but I surprising don't agree with wanting it to be multiplayer. The entire purpose of the Pawn system was to make the game feel like a multiplayer game, without it actually being multiplayer. The devs mention this in an interview. They wanted it to be a single player experience that feels like a multiplayer experience. So what I'm hoping for is an updated Pawn system. The Pawn system was already AMAZING, it just needed some touch ups. Like the whole repeating the same lines over and over thing. XD

The action feels super responsive, and satisfying with its feedback, and fantastical. It's like a melding of Monster Hunter and Devil May Cry, with a Skyrim aesthetic. The story is deceptively simple, and you can miss quite a bit of content that helps characterizes some characters, but the way it wraps up is really well done. It contextualizes everything in a perfect circle, a ring you could say.

For me, it was a blast, even from the first battle vs a monster, climbing on it and slashing it felt amazing. Even if the narrative for the game was super weak, and the romance system was about as clear as paint. The combat mechanics and the enemy variety were way ahead of its time. The ending was also a weak point for me, as it was either slay the dragon and cause the apocalypse, Become King/Queen but give up your beloved and lie about killing the dragon, or defeat the Seneshal only to become invisible and intangible to everyone.
