What everybody forgets to consider: -ProPlayers get their ankles taped -Curry often wears an additional brace for protection -there is no info on the SEVERITY of the sprains in these studies...huge difference whether it's a high sprain and wheter it's grade I or grade II sprain - previous studies showed that the thicker the air unit, the more severe is the sprain...not sure whether they differentiated between high and low cut. The nerves on your foot just react too late, if your soles are too thick. I have a 35 yr history of playing basketball and many many sprains. My doctor told me a few yrs ago: your body and face look like you are 15 yrs younger but x-rays of your feet look like you should be in a nursing home. I'm almost 47 now and exclusively play in old school hight tops (Jordan 12, Reebook Question, Even Air Force 1 high) and use an additional ankle brace. All my sprains with the ankle brace have been a lot less severe. My worst sprains came from stopping at full speed...mostly in new shoes. All my sprains OUTSIDE of basketball, happened in low cuts...but I had sprains since I was 5 years old...it's my weak spot...in 35 yrs of basketball I"ve had countless ankle sprains, 1 miniscus injury (age 22) and a partial tear of my achilles (age 43) and chipped teeth, broken nose, cuts, etc. But my lower body it was always the ankles. Even my knees look like I"m 20 yrs younger in the MRT cos my feet took all the damage 😞 I used to dunk until I was 36 so 10 yrs ago and I"m only 5.9 tall or 177cm. In 2010 I partially dislocated my ankle, never dunked after this. I was the fatsest guy my entire life on any court, but today I only play at 70-80% speed. I can still run faster if I want to but it's the landings and stops I"m worried about. I"m like an old sports car that can still go full speed but the tires and brakes are not up to it any more. Anyway my pro tips to prevent sprains: Strenghten your ankles (google proprioception training ankles) Use a balanceboard Do deadlifts (or other core strenght exercises) Walk barefoot around the house, "write your name" with your big toe on the floor, or pick up pencils with your toes and place them on the other side of your body Use resistance bands to strenghten your feet See a foot doctor and get insoles if needed Brush your teeth standing on one foot only Warm up and stretch ALL THE TIME And most important tip: Don"t play basketball 😉
I do believe that football players have really strong ankle joints and all of them wear low tops. Since most of their ankle mobility is not in their shoes but they build naturally by wearing low tops since it requires more activation of the ankle while the high tops prevents activation of ankle
I have bend by ankle many times and felt the support of the high top UA Basketball shoe preventing it from bending even more. That’s just me though I have also sprain my ankle very bad once and it was a high top.
One of the best ways to prevent ankle sprains is to look at the sole of your shoes and see of the part right before your pinky toe has an elongated or wider surface. I have sprain my ankle countless of times and shoes with wider outer foot soles have helped me the most, after high top shoes.
AWESOME CONTENT! Great channel, Wish I saw this channel before I torn my atfl..... May have ruined my pro chances. I have no idea how to rehab or when. Doctors in the uk never help.
Great video. I love the intersection of multiple studies and showing what muscles, ligaments, and nerves are involved with sprains. My ankle that was sprained months ago has a lot less dorsiflexion compared to my uninjured ankle. How can I regain that dorsiflexion if possible?
I do believe you misunderstood study three in their findings showing there was a higher chance of stumbling with high tops and the ankle muscles weakening from wearing high tops
i honestly prefer mid top, where the looks is kinda like curving down but your ankle bone is not visible like PG's and kyrie's and freak1 they just feel comfortably hugging my feet and giving me the feeling of safety while not restraining my movements
Very informative video. Thank you! Maybe you can comment my thougts: Young athelete on beginning of career. Better starting with low tops to get muscles and nerves trained for better reaction and therefor self protection . If ankle sprain happens - according to last study regardless if wearing lows or highs - switch to high tops (depending on severeness of injury?)
regardless of which shoe used, if there is a force it will go somewhere. if it's not the ankle because you wear high tops, it will likely go to the next joint, which would be the knee. which if you ask me, is the worse place to have the injury.
With the study done on college basketball players..how many of them got their ankles taped? The majority of nba players get their ankles tapped which provides extra support so wearing lows compared to mids/high tops might not seem to matter, but do the studies on players who don't get taped and I bet you the results will be different.. As for me, I wear mids...if you can ball in lows then more power to you. I just don't truth them.
You will roll your ankle in both but if you manage to roll it in a high top then your ankle will be way more fucked then if you were to roll it in low tops
"oi guys, let me first quote several studies that show no difference in ankle sprains between hi or low top and then I will finish by recommeding hi tops for anyone with a sprained ankle, based on no study whatsoever." The study you quoted of 600 players in one season certainly included at least 599 players who have had a sprained ankle before, yet the study showed no difference. so why recommend hi tops then. also, why do it based on anatomy of the nerve and not having an explaination why a formlery sprained ankle would irreversibly stretch the nerve which then would lead to !significantly! delayed response, which then would lead to a "significant" risk for your ankle. You cant go full retard, but you certainly can go full scientific but you didnt. Half truths, only seemingly based on study dont cut it.

I like how low tops let your ankle move around and i feel faster
Me too!

It is much cheaper to buy something to put on your foot to support it when injured or just don’t and save a lot of money.

Great video...I think you meant "sprain?"
Yep! Maybe my accent is a little hard to understand! hahaha
@@pinpointpodiatry3028 they meant in the title of the video
You should include the idea of taping ankles by pro players
I just got hurt from playing in the Under Armour Curry 4 Low smh
did the shoe attack you?
Max Meier Stfu bitch
Who's idea was low tops for b ball
I think Kobe
So why boys be havin to wear ankle braces?
High tops/mid tops > low tops for hoopin
What if you wear ankle braces? Are low tops good enough?
You will roll your ankle in both but if you manage to roll it in a high top then your ankle will be way more fucked then if you were to roll it in low tops
broke my ankle with the kyrie low 1
And i broke my ankle with drose dame high
Sub and like this guy is great 👍🏻 wow good content
I sprained my ankles today after wearing low cut shoes
That most likely means your ankles aren’t very strong and too used to the support high top shoes provide
high tops decondition your ankle
Aussies can hoop
