When I was a music student in London, I sat next to Herbert Howells on an Underground Train (though I did not know who he was at that time.) I picked up a packet which he had dropped and gave it back to him. (It was his sandwiches for lunch!). We chatted and I learned who he was. I had played all his Psalm Preludes from the age of 15 so was thrilled to meet him, speak to him - and of course save him from being hungry! What a day that was!
That is a great story!
Such a thoughtful musician of the very highest quality,Thankyou so much for your playing Nathan
Brilliant performance of a wonderful work by Howells!
Normally, the recordings of the grand organ (on RUclips) are of a rather poor quality. Yet, I listen to and for quadraphonic effects. "Eternal Father, strong to Save." What a mighty work. My father was in the Navy for 28 years. How beautiful a choir comes in to balance the whole harmonic structural standing wave. Grand, dear Nathan. Well done. Simply grand. You, obviously have no real idea of what this works means to me. And yet, I say, Thank you dear Nathan. "Eternal Father...." Bless Nathan.... save from ever peril .... CVD
An absolute pleasure to listen to ✈
Such a very fine piece, and not often played. Heartbreaking stuff. Wonderful performance, Nathan!
To play so beautifully and be so good looking, well it's not fair is it.
Wow! Simply Wow!
Splendid work
The Howells is such a magnificent and moving piece. Many thanks for programming it, I wish more people knew it. Particularly apposite to the centenary of the WW1 Armistice.
