The problem with investing in collectibles is the liquidity and the 15-20% fees/shipping you pay when selling. I love sealed but try to sell any of it and it definitely makes stocks more attractive 🤣
Disagree when it comes to stocks you got large company's influencing prices, analist, earnings reports, micro / marco events hurting the stock. Collectibles are more straight forward. Selling stock isn't free either in many country's you get screwed over with all sort of fees and you have plenty of illiquid stocks or stocks that only go down. Easily sold tons of high end sealed items, its hardly any effort
@PokemonHolo illiquid stock? What are you talking about, stocks are extremely liquid. When I want money, a guaranteed amount of cash--I make a sell on any number of shares and the money is in my account in less than 24hrs.. tops. Collectibles are not liquid.
People are buying temporal forces and the new stuff I think is absurd. I have faith in it. Problem with magic, outside the plainswalkers, they don't have iconic characters people love.
@ArenaRat then you know nothing of the history of collectibles. The size of an IP doesn't dictate its investability. Every collectible undergoes the same path over different time spans unless it successfully crosses into the realm of history
@ArenaRat Read books about collectibles, learn the whole scope of collectible finance, and explore beyond your narrow view. you'll see the truth about how they end up given a long enough time frame. Doesn't mean investing in them is dumb, just means you should be educated when you do invest
I bought my 3 cases of chilling and fusion. 3 of battle styles too but that’ll come along eventually. Still remember that time vividly. “JUST BUY SOMETHING!”
Never buy cards you don't want to have and use yourself. If you think you're going to get rich, you're not. The ship has sailed. Think about every box as something you are ok with having and opening one day when the market is so flooded and convoluted, no one has any emotional attachment to any cards anymore. I'm 41, my generation is emotionally attached to the power 9 and the original sets. Those things just won't mean as much as Gen z starts to get money and becomes the new market. Nothing they grew up playing is super rare anymore. I saw guys with a mox, a black lotus, an ali from cairo, it was like seeing unicorns, I wanted them so badly when I was 12 or 13 years old. The next generation doesn't have that.
And that’s why Rudy is buying new magic and selling vintage! Oh. Wait. No, he’s not. He won’t touch your new magic. But he’ll buy your vintage for 65% of eBay low sold! Liquidity is entirely dependent on your ability to find a buyer for the quantity you have. If you have a single box and sell it to a single buyer, it doesn’t mean the market is liquid even though you sold 100% of your inventory. Market saturation. I wonder why someone only pushing new stuff never mentions it 🤷♂️ A real mystery…
The people that were in collectables for a decade or more before the boom definitely made out the best. Bought for a small fraction and sold for a ton. They're still ahead even if they didn't sell.
ooh yes mate, specially if they locked a 1% fixed rata mortgage with the cardboard money. Thanks Lagarde, you are the here everybody needs, but nobody deserve it.
It does make sense, sure. A few sellers undercutting each other does not actually mean the item is worth "less" - it just means some sellers really want to sell and even take a loss to write off the inventory. Once these items have been flushed the "true" value appears again. That is, unless instead of "a few" half the owners of these products choose to sell around the same time. Then downward pressure on price does stabilize and the value is suppressed for a long time. Prime examples: Fallen Empires. Dragon's Maze.
A better way to Look at this is value is never static. Value is based on what someone, a consumer is willing to pay. That number changes within different market conditions and based on supply and demand. To attach a fixed value to anything is pure emotion and a recipe for disaster.
Of course it is not static - there is no "authority" that sets the value, there is no catalog that assigns any value to a box or single card like for other collectables. However, an item climbing in value as demand remains high does not mean its lost 50% of its value just because some sellers sell at half the last selling price. Only if that trend then resets to the lower point I would really say that the "value has declined by 50%", otherwise it's just sellers removing their inventory. It really gets to perspective and quantities. A few sales: meaningless, bargain for the buyer. A whole lot of sales: reset.
Collectibles don't have a "true" value, that should be kept in mind. Which means there is no default value to which they can return. A few dozen sellers throwing out their inventory can completely change the perception of the asset. As can external events like economic crises. Or demographical ones, like long time collectors aging/dying out of the hobby. So while there are general trends, you can never be certain that formerly established patterns will repeat. Aside from that, one should also keep in mind that Magic cards are not just collectibles. They are also game pieces. Sets like Dragons Maze perform so bad because they are worthless as game pieces, so they have to rely on collectibility alone. Which is not a lot in a modern era print to demand product.
I'll never forget buying a deal from an online LGS for an Evolving Skies and Fusion Strike booster box combo for $180 in the December 2021 Fusion Strike panic sales.
Sorcery sellout was because of TENDIES not because of interest. secondary market interest is because of speculation not because of legitimate collecting or playing interest. Source: I’m a patron.

When the generation of middle school magic players ages and dies, the trove of nostalgia cards below the power 9 will dwindle to worthlessness. You better have a plan to sell them before that happens.
Lol if I can scoop up wheel of fortunes at rock bottom below hundred prices, I will. Most of us would want a collapse or a reset simply to get black border decks
Pretty sure I can name you 10 expensive lands with spirally patterns in their text box which are below power 9 but definitely not going anywhere near nothingness dwindling anytime soon 🤔
Well we’ve been through a lot is an understatement brother I’ve been here with my old account since idk 80 to 100 or so subs…. Either way brother like I said during those early days let’s see where this is going. I haven’t always been able to apply what you’ve talked about over the years Rudy but know I’ve followed a lot of your advice definitely when you were telling us to throw caution to the wind of doing mass box openings and thankfully I listened but cause today I would have bet and lost the whole farm if I kept opening and trying to resell, Dragons Maze was a kick in the teeth too me and took a while to recover I couldn’t imagine having that repeat every few months for at least the last year.
DEAR RUDY could you please make a video about YOUR opinion on why (the F) someone would pay 400/800quids for a useless nowadays card/box when he could afford a huge Old School amazingly printed 30yrs of history magic card??!!! Pleaseeeeeeee
fair point sir. I was mad you weren't stocking play boxes for next set, but likely they'll be around to get cheap at some point figure it out later. I'll stock up on older $89 boxes, edh sets 4 packs for now. I can't personally resist opening collector boxes. I've open my 2 manor and 1 fallout bundle. Serialized hype got me.
Part of the reason we are seeing faster recoveries on newer product is because a lot less of it is being opened/hoarded compared to the madness that was 2019-2021. Phyrexia All will be one took a little longer to hit the highs because so much of it was opened despite being a great set.
The first step to successful investment is figuring your goals and risk tolerance either on your own or with the help of a financial professional but it's very advisable you make use of professional

Another pokemon set that will likely follow fusion strike, is lost origin. Has a more expensive chase rare, boxes are currently 180ish on tcgplayer and you can buy them for 143.64 direct from pokemon center.(3/28/24) Bet both sets will be over 300 in a couple years
I love Throne of Eldraine, War of the Spark, Kamigawa 4 and Phirexia awbo- I can buy all these boxes for $100-130 and I LOVE IT! Stocking up to draft for the next 40 years.
If there is an excess of supply, prices go down, and an excess of demand makes prices go up. All buying and selling does is add or remove liquidity to the market. But this makes me think that a decline in liquidity makes it a easier to swing/trend trade, since price is likely to move violently. As long as risk management is in place, it could be basis of a valid strategy.
Im new to magic, Commander is alright and other formats are out of reach. But the most fun format has been limited. I've been buying cheap draft boxes, playing them with my roommates, then selling the hits back to buy another box. Super fun. Not buying $140 "play box" of schlock and variants. No one cares about that
And now just rewind some 40-50 videos where Rudy said the upswing will come, but that we will all miss it. And when we realise it is too late to jump on the bandwaggon. Perfect advise to everyone to just do their thing and what they like and believe without being influenced by anyone talking abour product one way or another, including Rudy. Enjoy the game!
vintage magic is so far removed from the modern player and no one can actually afford it or is afraid to play the cards. and the collector boxes basically did the death blow to vintage. the new cards are pricey, look great, have insane power levels and you sometimes only need one for commander. and there is a collector value to them as well. even oko who is basically unplayable is worth much
I'm wondering if the branded sets like, LOTR, Baldurs Gate and Fallout are actually the only ones doing slightly well. I think in between right no there has also been some.. anime things that have been doing well. What about the normal MTG sets that dont have anything like that??
when you have 100boxes for $100 and they all sell out, then the next price is $150, then 175... eventually those will be the cheapest prices unless more product is put on the market
Rudy is a real estate agent in 2009 talking about how the prices weren't all that high because after 10 more years of inflation the value will come back. They get rich on the bubbles. He's really just talking to all the other house flippers out there who bought in with him to the sealed package boom.
My issue with old product is there is no where to play it. If I buy up Duals I’d also want to be able to play with them. Legacy prior to 201x was heavily pushed by SCG. Now there is zero places to play legacy.
Welllllll they dropped legacy as main formats, card prices crashed then they bought cards for 9 months at lows and then said "syke!" Brought it back and a bunch of their pros got caught cheating and they slowly phased it out again and the prices didn't crash again so it's forever just a small event at the SCG cons rather than a main event
My unintelligent take for some of this may be summed up with a question like this... "You can buy this vintage MTG Card, or a pallet of Fallout, or LotR, or Assassin's Creed for the same price... what you want?"
The problem with old Magic is that its pretty much Alpha Rudy, Edwin, Open Dan Booster, Dan Rat Chang types czircle jerking the market. Theyre getting old and dropping off. Young folk dont give two tacos about whatever they harp on about.
Modern Magic is hot trash. "Brothers War" was the last new product I got suckered into. I'll take a NM Su-Chi over any new box of reprinted reprints that'll be reprinted.
Rudy is a great case study over 9 years of how a diet of Taco Bell will affect someone.
You're fortunate to gaze upon the specimen that Baja Blast built
As the price of Taco Bell shoot up like crazy, so does Rudy’s insanity.
Those Beefy 5 layers no longer under a dollar anymore...

vintage magic is so far removed from the modern player and no one can actually afford it or is afraid to play the cards. and the collector boxes basically did the death blow to vintage. the new cards are pricey, look great, have insane power levels and you sometimes only need one for commander. and there is a collector value to them as well. even oko who is basically unplayable is worth much
OKO is not unplayable OKO is awesome
i thought he´s banned. good to know@@NateBullock-ow6on
Rudy did you ever start your position in sealed Atari?
Funny how moxman, hometown tcg, etc were wrong about Ravnica remastered 😂😂😂. Never listen to youtubers. They are just nonsense
This pump promotion video was a little to obvious.
Rudy is a real estate agent in 2009 talking about how the prices weren't all that high because after 10 more years of inflation the value will come back. They get rich on the bubbles. He's really just talking to all the other house flippers out there who bought in with him to the sealed package boom.
All in on bearscape
Rudy, I've been lurking in your videos since the start. Keep on keeping on.
In 2024, the magnificent 7 stocks went to the magnificent 5, with Apple and Tesla feeling the change of time.
Mtg following the housing market. Demand for new issue no demand for old builds 😋
Fusion strike had the alt art hits stolen straight from printing facility tho. Did people forget already 😂
My issue with old product is there is no where to play it. If I buy up Duals I’d also want to be able to play with them. Legacy prior to 201x was heavily pushed by SCG. Now there is zero places to play legacy.
We ain't ready for that convo
lmao vintage seller DO NOT want you going around talking about that
Welllllll they dropped legacy as main formats, card prices crashed then they bought cards for 9 months at lows and then said "syke!" Brought it back and a bunch of their pros got caught cheating and they slowly phased it out again and the prices didn't crash again so it's forever just a small event at the SCG cons rather than a main event
“If you bought 60 boxes you’d raise the price to at least $200”
I checked and this is false. They would be $199.99
Still holding all my Baldur's Gate boxes. Great set!
My unintelligent take for some of this may be summed up with a question like this... "You can buy this vintage MTG Card, or a pallet of Fallout, or LotR, or Assassin's Creed for the same price... what you want?"
More and more people are getting into the hobby of collecting and playing these tcg’s. The moon is not that far away.
They say it's only a paper moon, sailing over a cardboard sea.
The problem with old Magic is that its pretty much Alpha Rudy, Edwin, Open Dan Booster, Dan Rat Chang types czircle jerking the market. Theyre getting old and dropping off. Young folk dont give two tacos about whatever they harp on about.
Sorcery is a new game, the delays are frustrating but I think it will all turn out well.
you're microphone volume is low. sound off like you got a pair Rudy!
Ive been hate watching from the beginning Rudy. Don't even play magic that much. Just put it on the tv loud as your voice makes my wife cringe.
Modern Magic is hot trash. "Brothers War" was the last new product I got suckered into.
I'll take a NM Su-Chi over any new box of reprinted reprints that'll be reprinted.
448 Boxes of Baldurs Collectors on Cardmarket.
I spy with my little eye ... can hardly wait.
Rudy I did buy those ~$100 Baldur's Gate Collector Boxes!... Unfortunately I also bought $240 Collector Boxes from you 😥
Well I am gobbling up as many Unlimited cards as I can. See you in 7 years.
well balders gate turned around barbecue of the video game.
Rudy coping hard
