It turns out the oil we used was super old and we got it confused with the new one which had the same packaging. It wasn’t safe, but it was nearly impossible to know. We were nearly burned from head to toe, but didn’t get the slightest burn. I feel very lucky. What did we learn? Beware of exploding oil. Mother knows best.

She just put one in to test as it was our first time making and having churros. We stood by the stove, but not next to it. She told me to be careful of the oil, but I ignored that. What could happen? Right? *_right?_*
Wrong.
We were standing, watching. She let me put one in and then move away. We returned to where we were and heard a sizzle. Suddenly, the oil bubbled up and popped, making a huge splatter that went above our heads and was probably the size of my dog on his legs. (He’s a mini tho) It was a huge explosion of burning hot oil and it missed us by a centimeter. Luckily, my mom shoved us out of the way in time where we didn’t get burned at all.
It turns out the oil we used was super old and we got it confused with the new one which had the same packaging. It wasn’t safe, but it was nearly impossible to know. We were nearly burned from head to toe, but didn’t get the slightest burn. I feel very lucky.
What did we learn?
Beware of exploding oil. Mother knows best.
