The beautiful part about that verse is what you said about it pointing to a spiritual reality. What Jesus told him to do was not something explicitly stated in the law. There was no mosaic law that said you had to sell everything you had. But Jesus also said the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart. His command to the rich young ruler revealed that although he thought he followed all of the commandments he missed the most important one.. he loved his possessions more than God. The commandment to love God with all your heart could still be considered the most important commandment we as Christians are to follow even though we cannot do it perfectly in our flesh. Everything we do as believers through our process of sanctification stems from attempting to love God with all our heart and love our neighbors as ourselves.
Great point! I was just thinking about the rich young ruler this morning. What a wonderful reminder that Jesus is our only hope of salvation. We fail constantly, which is why we desperately need to look to Him constantly to rescue us to the uttermost.
Hi Jeremiah. Great video! I like how you bring the rich young ruler story to a logical conclusion that contradicts teachings that many CoC congregations have. However, at the 7:00 mark you said that the CoC does not believe we are born with a sin nature. That is not a true statement, They absolutely DO believe that it is in everyone's nature to sin - that everyone will eventually sin - that through Adam's decision sin was brought into the world - that we ae born with a nature that will lead us to sin - that when we are born via a physical seed it will result in perishing because everyone will sin - but that when we are born again with a spiritual seed it will result in the imperishable. The CoC would reject the teaching of Pelagius that everyone is inherently inclined toward good deeds upon their birth and they would rightfully identify that as heresy because you cannot be born with a sinful nature and also be born inclined to do good deeds at the same time. What the majority of CoC's believe (from my experience - although they are all autonomous) is that while everyone is born with the inherent nature TO sin ... nobody is born already guilty OF sin - meaning they believe that everyone is born sinless - simply because a newborn has not yet had the chance to commit a sin. I'm not in the CoC anymore - but spending 5 decades in that denomination (yep - I said it was a denomination for all you CoC folks reading this comment) has given me a pretty good background in understanding what some of the most common beliefs are ... although there are always exceptions. Also, I believe there would be a lot of disagreement within the multiple CoC sects regarding how the sinful nature of mankind is acquired. Some would say that it is passed down through the seed of the man, some would say it is passed down via the seed of the woman, others would say it is simply in the genetic code of all human beings, others would say it is a spiritual thing that exists among the whole human race, and others would say that HOW it exists in every human being is not important as long as we know that we are all destined to sin. I think a lot of confusion exists simply because the CoC refuses to embrace doctrinal truths that have a label which they did not assign. For instance, most CoC folks would fall into the amillennial camp ... but most of them have never even heard of that term and would reject being identified as such because the name has the word "millennial" in it. Keep up the good work. Bob from the That's Jesus Channel

Therefore He passed through every age, becoming an infant for infants, sanctifying infants; a child for children, sanctifying those who are of that age … . - Born again through Baptism; Trinitarian formula - 3:17:1 And again, giving the disciples the power of regenerating in God, He said to them: “Go and teach all nations, and baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (Matt. 28:19). This He promised through the Prophets, that is in the last days He would pour out upon His servants and handmaids the ability to prophesy (see Joel 2:28). Therefore He did also descend upon the Son of God made Son of man, becoming accustomed to Him to dwell among the human race, to rest with men, to dwell in the workmanship of God, working the will of the Father in them, and renewing them from their old ways into the newness of Christ. And more specifically… “And dipped himself,” says [the Scripture], “seven times in Jordan.” It was not for nothing that Naaman of old, when suffering from leprosy, was purified upon his being baptized, but [it served] as an indication to us. For as we are lepers in sin, we are made clean, by means of the sacred water and the invocation of the Lord, from our old transgressions; being spiritually regenerated as new-born babes, even as the Lord has declared: “Except a man be born again through water and the Spirit, he shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Irenaeus (A.D. 180) Ante-Nicene Fathers vol.1 pg. 574 ca. 203 A.D., Clement of Alexandria, The Instructor of the Children - Born again through Baptism; remission of sins - “And such as is the union of the Word with baptism, is the agreement of milk with water; for it receives it alone of all liquids, and admits of mixture with water, for the purpose of cleansing, as baptism for the remission of sins. And it is mixed naturally with honey also, and this for cleansing along with sweet nutriment.” 1:6:26:1-2 When we are baptized, we are enlightened. Being enlightened, we are adopted as sons. Adopted as sons, we are made perfect. Made perfect, we are become immortal. … This work is variously called grace, illumination, perfection, and washing. It is a washing by which we are cleansed of sins; a gift of grace by which the punishments due our sins are remitted; an illumination by which we behold that holy light of salvation-that is, by which we see God clearly; and we call that perfection which leaves nothing lacking. TERTULLIAN 203 A.D. “Happy is our sacrament of water, in that, by washing away the sins of our early blindness, we are set free and admitted into eternal life. . . . [But] a viper of the [Gnostic] Cainite heresy, lately conversant in this quarter, has carried away a great number with her most venomous doctrine, making it her first aim to destroy baptism-which is quite in accordance with nature, for vipers and.asps . . . themselves generally do live in arid and waterless places. But we, little fishes after the example of our [Great] Fish, Jesus Christ, are born in water, nor have we safety in any other way than by permanently abiding in water. So that most monstrous creature, who had no right to teach even sound doctrine, knew full well how to kill the little fishes-by taking them away from the water!” (Baptism 1).

“As many as are persuaded and believe that what we [Christians] teach and say is true, and undertake to be able to live accordingly . . . are brought by us where there is water, and are regenerated in the same manner in which we were ourselves regenerated. For, in the name of God, the Father and Lord of the universe, and of our Savior Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit, they then receive the washing with water. For Christ also said, ‘Except you be born again, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven’ [John 3:3]” (First Apology 61).
*For Christ also said, “Except you be born again, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Now, that it is impossible for those who have once been born to enter into their mothers’ wombs, is manifest to all. And how those who have sinned and repent shall escape their sins, is declared by Isaiah the prophet, as I wrote above; he thus speaks: “Wash you, make you clean…” Justin Martyr (A.D. 160) Ante-Nicene Fathers vol.1 pg.183*
ca. 185 A.D., Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons, disciple of Polycarp of Smyrna, Against Heresies - Infant Baptism; born again through Baptism; remission of sins - 2:22:4 [Jesus] came to save all through Himself,-all, I say, who through Him are reborn in God-infants, and children, and youths, and old men.
And more specifically…
“And dipped himself,” says [the Scripture], “seven times in Jordan.” It was not for nothing that Naaman of old, when suffering from leprosy, was purified upon his being baptized, but [it served] as an indication to us. 574
ca. 203 A.D., Clement of Alexandria, The Instructor of the Children
- Born again through Baptism; remission of sins -
“And such as is the union of the Word with baptism, is the agreement of milk with water; for it receives it alone of all liquids, and admits of mixture with water, for the purpose of cleansing, as baptism for the remission of sins. And it is mixed naturally with honey also, and this for cleansing along with sweet nutriment.”
1:6:26:1-2 When we are baptized, we are enlightened.
@@DonnyKarr the early church were being sanctified over time in their theological clarity. They would reject the CoC conflation of law and gospel :)
The CoC claims to be the Kingdom of God! Yikes!
Yikes. The Bible defines what the Kingdom is:
What is the Kingdom?
1 Cor. 4:20 For the kingdom of God does not consist in words but in power.
Rom. 14:17 (not physical, but spiritual) for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
@EverlastingLife-pl9ug Yikes, the word of God teaches the Lord's Church and the Kingdom are the same thing!!
Matthew 16:17-19 NASB95 - And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”
@@walkerscout No it does not.
Luke 18:18-23 (NASB) A ruler questioned Him, saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. "You know the commandments, 'DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'" And he said, "All these things I have kept from my youth." When Jesus heard this, He said to him, "One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.
You are reading a lot into the passagfe, that the passage doesn't support!
Jesus didn't correct the rich young ruller, when he said Luke 18:21 (NASB) And he said, "All these things I have kept from my youth." Why do you read in the passage things that aren't there?
@@walkerscout He’s not reading into the text when you let scripture interpret scripture. Jesus corrects him by addressing his heart as opposed to the letter. Even those who thought they kept the law perfectly did not. The greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart.. this is what the the ruler wasn’t able to do. Nobody can because nobody seeks after God.
“There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God; All have turned aside, together they have become useless; There is none who does good, There is not even one.””
Romans 3:11-12
“because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.”
Romans 3:20
““You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
Matthew 5:27-28
“For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.”
James 2:10
@@Seekingchristdaily Please read the passage again and tell me where in the passage Jesus corrected the rich young ruller!! Context matters!!
@@walkerscout Jesus didn't have to verbally correct him, his own conscience did, because Jesus' words pricked him to the heart.
@@christrescuedme2182 Jerimiah said the rich young ruler couldn't have kept the Law as he said he did!! If the rich young ruler was lying, why didn't Jesus correct him?
Jesus said; Luke 18:22 (NASB) When Jesus heard this, He said to him, "One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."
"one thing you lack" indicates that the rich young ruler did keep the Law as he said he did!
Context matters, not adding to what is written!!
@@walkerscout Just because someone may, for a time, keep the law externally, that doesn't mean they have ever been able to perfectly keep it at the heart level. And that is exactly what God requires, which is why we need the Savior, for no one is able. Only Jesus kept the law perfectly, on behalf of those he came to save. And He perfectly satisfied God's divine justice, on their behalf, at the cross. God's justification of a sinner is two-fold. For there is no way anyone can keep the law perfectly. And there's no way anyone can satisfy divine justice for the sins that they've committed, which is why hell is eternal.
