Why Do England Look So Bad At Euro 2024?

  • England were the pre-tournament favourites heading into UEFA Euro 2024, and remain the favourites, ahead of a Round of Sixteen tie against Slovakia, having topped their group and only conceding one goal in three games.
And yet, England have been booed off the pitch by their own fans in two of their three matches at this Euros, and there isn't much positivity domestically with regard to the team's performances.
In this video, HITC Sevens looks at why England have failed to impress at the Euros, what can be done to fix it, and whether Gareth Southgate is capable of coming up with the necessary solutions.

Nah players are overrated and it's just another case "golden generation". These players are system players, the only exceptions are the three mentioned by Alfie, other than those three all these players are not world beaters. These players though they have some talent lack creativity and spontaneity, Saka for example, of all the matches I've watched the only successful dribbles have been when a defender was on the back foot, he is extremely talented but is mentally gelded just like many of the players in this England team. Look at teams like Spain, Germany or Portugal who all have players who can turn a game on its head on a dime.
I'm not saying these are bad players, but this is international tournament football, which is almost never won just by tactics alone, you need players to have some freedom, not just tactically but mentally on the part of the players. Say a player at the highest level, the game is at its 70th minute and it's 0-0 and he's received the ball in a promising position outside the box, if it's an England player that ball is going to get passed around while even a Spanish player would attempt a shot.
That's the problem, there is absolutely spontaneity or creativity in this England team and that's more the fault of the way these players were brought up and English football culture which is more "European" in its emphasis on discipline and monotony even more than Germany or Spain.

True but there’s also times where the player in possession needs to be able to force the ball through the lines instead of doing 1 2s on the centre circle . Rodri and Ruiz are willing and capable of long balls into Nico Williams or firing passes into Pedri between the lines. Rice won’t even pass to Foden if he drops deep for a 5 yard pass if there’s someone in his general vicinity. All our attackers are used to having other teammates capable of progressing play into the final third whether that Kroos, Rodri or Jorginho so they wait for rice to figure it out which he just can’t. That why Phillips/Henderson were so important next to Rice because they had a good passing range to get the ball to wingers and get them a couple of seconds of isolation against a player in the last line. It’s what Mainoo did that Gallagher didn’t. It’s what Gordon did for himself in his cameo that lead to the Palmer chance.

Marco van Basten made a good point on Dutch TV. Too often England are passing directly to the feet instead of a few yards ahead for the player to run onto. Makes it very static and give the opposition time to react. The ball to Walker against Denmark for the goal, was one of very few exceptions!

HOT TAKE: england have played so many teams below their level that those teams went in KNOWING they'd park the bus whats annoying is when we do it after ONE goal...so i have hope for these reasons (bit english-rose tinted glasse but i try and be pretty objective tbh) at this point all WE can do is hope for the best anyway lol - also i have a pretty 'unique' lineup (5231) at the bottom too:
    Pickford
    Trent (RWB)* - Walker - Stones - Konsa - Saka(LWB) - both wing backs more attacking/overlaps
Rice (CM but more defensive/pass fwd, not dribble as much)
Bellingham (CM but can help us transition out of the middle 3rd we play our WHOLE game in)
Palmer (attack but drops if Saka overlaps up) - Foden (in his BEST #10 role) - Gordon (speed in transition never hurts when we cant transition to save our lives)
Kane - obv, though i see him coming short to lay off to the faster 5 around him in front/behind and then following up as a passing option or rebounds/positioning as he does
SUBS - extra important with how much extra time we've had
-Mainoo for somone beside Jude but maybe put HIM in Fodens wrong LW spot and let Foden have the 10 and see how it goes
    - Eze for Palmer maybe 65th depending on how the games going
-If we can't get anything going bring Watkins on, EVEN if it means a late Kane sub in a tight game, he gives us counterattack speed against a SWI back 5 that sends its WB's fwd the way i suggest we do tbh, i just think we have the speed to get back where they dont re: counterattacks...and we can create in many other ways too imo (if things go well obv)
-Tripp could always come on for Saka and then slide Saka to RW if he's not getting worn out or ---Just sub them straight/give Shaw a run if he's ready cuz starting him in a semifinal after 6months out of competetive is insane imo)
-Bowen could play at RM/RW for Gordon esp if he burns out with the speed
-Gomes could replace the most tired of the back 3 esp if theres extra time etc
__________ WHY I THINK WE COULD STILL ACTUALLY WIN _________________
-As i said, we havent played a team that GIVES a chance for much counterattack with the insane speak in our front 5/6 and how fast someone like Jude/Rice can pass and move the ball upfield but we've been stuck in the middle third cuz every team we've played has camped out in the top of their third happy for a point
    - England FAMOUSLY have a habit of playing up or down to the level of our opps - point is, it wouldnt be insane if we came out squeeked by the next two games with that tiny extra bit of quality and hopefully a sub or two but the final is really (i know im looking WAY ahead but im discussing this as all or nothing cuz imo thats what it comes down too for ENG/Southgate after losing on PK's in the last Euros and having a team of THE BEST/GREAT PLAYERS but not the BEST/GREATEST TEAM due to chemistry etc
-So following off that, say we do get through to the final which tech is the only game we'll be underdogs in betting/pundit wise (most likely) first off, any given game/night u never know what crazy call/VAR/mistake could change a game but beyond that, we play to our opps levels and i do think if ENG even playing like they are now, get a couple more games under their belt and THEN play SPA/FRA in the final (esp after how FRA looked today kinda meh imo, though SPA scares me more though they'd FORCE us to play faster footy which ya never know how itll play out in just ONE game) point is - DESPITE poor to hopefully bad permormances getting mediocre is a sign they'll get decent and better and when we do have to face a team of truly talented teams or individual players we'll be better prepared to handle them and not let the moment get too big (speaking of which holy shit those FRA PK's were teriffying, god help us if we face FRA on PK's)
-We are SLOWLY but steadily improving and we know we have the best players on paper which means the improvment is coming from the team gelling/chemistry (studies show teams take TWO YEARS to fully hit their peak in a new system...we had like under 2 months lol and so many new faces - so Gareth is just playing it safe with the tried and true aka the ones he DIDNT give shots to last time around FOR THE SAME REASON (bellingham in 20/22 was like palmer this year, everyone wanted him and he just couldnt get on for much at all)
--------------------------------------------END OF REASONS - some more info------------------------------------
I know ill get ripped apart for any opinion but atleast try and be constructive, we're all fighting for the same hope and belief and if ur old enough to remember Greece in '04 playing Portugal in the final which was IN HOST NATION PORTUGAL (Fk em and chrissy tryna hide his tears after the last PK miss ones went viral lol, as a ENG fan you gotta love it if you lived through the years of torture from PK's/losses to POR/Ronaldo...
But re: Greece 04 - after a slew of jammy/set piece/OT 1-goal wins to get there then parking the bus (dont blame coach/team, greece was mid talent but smarter) and they pulled it off...does Gareth think we'll be Greece: The Sequel except on paper our team is prob 10x better than that 2004 OLD Greece squad lmfao and we're still struggling though it was def scary to see our DEF fumble and our Off fail when goin in everyone expected plenty of goals for AND against...
Regardless, its aint over till its over and we have a helluva team even with a shit coach and maybe having to be underdogs without expecations will help too either way COME ON LADS, ITS COMING HOME!!!!

the issue is foden, he wants to be the focal point of the team. he's forced bellingham out wide left where bellingham has to do all of foden's defensive work. that creates a defacto double pivot that has to sit deep to compensate for foden's lack of contribution out of possession, which by extension has foden and kane competeing for the same areas and leaves saka isolated.
i also think kane's reputation is what's keeping watkins out of the team. watkin's has so much more to offer at this point in time.

This is a Southgate issue. Almost all these players play in different systems at their clubs. You have players like Bellingham, Foden, and Kane who on paper don’t play the same positions but they like to be the in same areas of the pitch. Players are the manager’s disposal, Southgate needs to be able to instruct these players on what places to operate and if they don’t listen then don’t use them.

Foden needs to be dropped - He should have been a bench option to replace Bellingham after like 70 minutes each game rather than played out of position on the Left.
    -
Bellingham meanwhile was clearly tired and out of sorts against Slovenia and now he's going to be even more knackered having played the entirety of that game too - He should have been rested in that 3rd game with Foden replacing him at 10 and Gordon or Eze {who really didn't help his cause when coming on and playing like a prat against Denmark} on the Left.
    -
Kane is coming back way too much still - He's not doing his job and keeping the defenses honest!
We have Bellingham and Foden so why is Kane trying to do their jobs rather than his own!?!

Not sure if it would have worked, but it would have given freedom to run down the left.

The manager should have a clear style and set of tactics in mind.
You then put the best player in each position regardless of who is the ‘best 11’.
If that means leaving out a Foden in favour of Gordon (on the left) or Mainoo (to bolster the midfield) or Palmer then so be it.
The best TEAM is not always the best ELEVEN PLAYERS.

I would switch Saka to the left (he can play there), Foden to the right (where he looks best) drop Kane for Toney (Kane confuses the team's movement), put Bellingham at 10, have Rice be the deepest 6 on the left side to protect Trippier, Gallagher slightly ahead of him as a ball-winner, Trippier at leftback (sending diagonals to Foden when possible) Walker at rightback and a defensive pairing of Dunk (underrated) and Konsa (solid) ahead of Pickford (reliable).
    So
    ST. Toney (targetman)
    LW. Saka (classic winger)
    RW. Foden (wide inverted playmaker)
    AM. Bellingham (second striker)
    RDM. Gallagher (ball-winning box-box)
    LDM. Rice (holding midfielder)
    FBL. Tripper (inverted fullback)
    FBR. Walker (classic fullback)
    CBL. Dunk (centreback)
    CBR. Konsa (centreback)
    GK. Pickford (goalkeeper)

I know it's radical but since it's pretty clearly Southgates last tournament. I think the best way to fix England's tactical problems is to completely change Personal (you have a squad for a reason). Bellingham and rice have both been underwhelming. Foden either can't understand that he needs to be a left winger or he doesn't want to despite England's lack of a left back and that kind of routine insubordination needs to be punished. Start Gordan, Wharton, Mainoo, and Watkins have Kane be a 10 or second striker. Move walker over to lb and start trent at rb. As honestly what do we have to lose
Edit: Also how are the set peices so bad without maguire its actually funny.

Kane shouldn't play without runners. Bellingham, kane and foden try to occupy exactly the same space and do the same thing in each match. Kane acts like a 10 when u already have two on the pitch. Southgate needs to drop at least one of them to balance the middle of the park. They are all amazing but they can't win matches by getting in each other's way.

In his defense, I think people kind of took that wrong. What I heard was "a Kalvin Philips". It's Southgate's job to find a way, but England have two midfielders (Henderson and Philips) who were hardworking, dynamic, and important to the cohesion of the team at Euro 2020 and the WCs respectively, who have either through injuries or aging become unviable to bring in at major tournaments. Not to mention Luke Shaw as well. If he had brought him up, I don't think people would mock him nearly as much because everyone can see he's missed, so he definitely dug his own grave there.
Where I lose sympathy is his complete inability to find a way to tactically or man-for-man replace those players.

Pressure is definitely a factor with England this year, like it has been so many times before. Whether they should be able to handle that pressure is another question, but they're not. Other big teams have it too, and it is showing, but apart from the Netherlands (another team who often bottle it) they've all won a trophy recently, so it's less extreme. Our media are the worst too. Sky, Talksport et al, who hype us up as if we're bound to win it. The nation digests that and creates an unworkable environment for both player and manager in which they get very little thanks for winning and get slaughtered when they don't. The media are never going to fully admit that the pressure is getting to the players because it would be a complete conflict of interest on their part. They'd be partly to blame! This could affect the story machine and ultimately their profits. Much easier to pin it all on Southgate and create a feedback loop of negativity towards him which has now ballooned out of control. I'm not saying he's tactical genius, far from it, but when you look at how we played in the last three tournaments (when there was less pressure) you have to ask the question, what's changed? The players? They've literally got better! It doesn't fully explain these bad performances. The big names; Sake, Bellingham, Kane etc are playing with a weight on their shoulders and they are not enjoying themselves out there. It was especially noticeable against Denmark. The Slovenia game was better, and it's really encouraging that some of the bench players seem less affected by the pressure, but I'm expecting a repeat of Iceland 2016 against Slovakia. Hopefully I'm wrong and the boys can overcome these mental barriers and play how we know they can play. All we can do is get behind them all. Come on England!!!

It was a group where each team was fairly defensive and stayed deep - tough to break down, lacking pace in forward positions etc. that’s why every team failed to score goals in the group. It’s simply how the teams set up. We found it difficult to break them down and didn’t quite find a solution, like all the teams in the group. We did enough and that’s all that really matters now. The games will look completely different when we come up against more positive teams, for better or worse. We’ll find out whether we suit playing against more positive teams when it comes to it, don’t be surprised if it is a good thing for us rather than a negative thing.
What should be said is we have been in control of the pace of each game (perhaps the Denmark game aside towards the end of the first half) far more than most other sides. Some of the so called better teams have struggled to keep control in games, even against lesser opposition. That suggests we aren’t quite as awful as we feel that we are.

  • @Aurainmaker

Southgate is, and has always been, a terribly unambitious manager and very defensive minded. He's coincided with an era where our talent are among the best in the world and extremely individually gifted but he's so set in his ways that he won't experiment. We've been blessed with having generous draws that have given us match-ups that we've been the stronger team but we've also also tended to fall short when the teams really bite back. Abusing him, or throwing items at him is not acceptable. He has, however, been given a lot of slack when the results have flattered to deceive. "We don't have a natural replacement for Kalvin Philips" - bring him to the tournament then? You had the power to action this. You've shown before that you don't particularly care for form (see: Maguire last year).
To give him some credit, this year he has trended more urgent with his substitutes and made them sooner but he's not using them all and I can't fathom why. There is no cost to getting fresh legs on the pitch. You can't make an excuse that young players do not have experiencve if they aren't given a chance to play, it's criminal to bring players on for 5 or so minutes when the game is effectively gone and they won't get a touch.
He's also overly loyal to his talismans. Kane came in the tournament recovering from injury, is playing terribly out of position and outside of a goal which happened mostly to him not because of him (which isn't nothing ofc), he has been a hindrance. You say almost no one would say don't drop Kane. I am. He needs to be an impact substitute.
Win the tournament or not, this should be Southgate's final tenure as England manager and if England win the tournament, it's the ultimate fuck you to those who don't think he's very good like myself.
As for who's next for England post Southgate - Fuck the FA, their ego and need to control everything, Guardiola says he's probably on the way out of city. He's not won any international honour and it's the final boxes to tick for him. Winning a Euro or World Cup with England would be the final thing to seal him as the inarguable best manager of all time, given the ability England have to throw it away. Give him free rein of the England set up and a fat paycheck to get him in. It's a less intensive role for Pep so he can also take some time away from the game compared to a club manager.

Living in Australia and I think I've hit the nail on the head for instance why Australia for instance is better at most sports than England.
Take cricket for example, Australian attacking players are told to relax mentally, hype up physically and just go out and do what you do naturally. Same in both rugby codes etc.
I feel English players are extremely micromanagend, too much pressure on their play etc.
I would say, so what you missed a penalty in the pass, who cares what the pundits say. Go out, attackers, do what you do best

I think one of Southgate's biggest problems is he's scared of (or unable) making big decisions and cutting out players who don't work together. I have some sympathy for this, because I guarantee if he dropped someone like Kane or moved Bellingham into midfeld with Rice and, say, Mainoo and it didn't work, people would scream for his head even more than they do now.
England having so many of "the best players in the world" means that, of course, you have to start all of them. Starting a winger from a non-Champions League club (Gordon) for a treble winning dribbling god (Foden) sounds like insanity out of context.

Starting a winger from a non-Champions League club (Gordon) for a treble winning dribbling god (Foden) sounds like insanity out of context.
      NO IT REALLY DOESN'T!
It's a TEAM game and Foden should have been on the bench as an option to replace Bellingham at 10 around the 70 minute mark in each game - This would mean that Bellingham wouldn't have been so tired against Slovenia, and Foden wouldn't be played out of position on the Left, and we'd have an actual Left Winger on the pitch!
      -
After the Denmark game and other results meaning England had already qualified for the second round Bellingham should have been rested against Slovenia, Foden could have been moved to 10 and Gordon or even Eze played on the Left.
Slovenia had seen our previous two games and knew the Saka/Walker partnership on the right was what they had to stop....They did stop it! They basically took Saka out of the game!
If we'd had an actual Left Winger on the pitch that wouldn't have happened!

with regards to the Foden point, if it doesn't work then sure, but Gordon's actually a left winger, Foden's a CAM through and through, he's being used the wrong way.
