Is Xi Jinping’s China on a path to war? Mehdi Hasan & Victor Gao | Head to Head

  • Over the past few decades, China has solidified its status as an economic superpower. But the country’s economic boom coupled with its increased military might has increased tensions in the region, including with Taiwan, where fears are mounting over a possible Chinese invasion.
Meanwhile, at home, China’s human rights record remains under the spotlight with severe curtailments on free speech and a continued hardline policy on the country’s Uighur community.
    So what lies ahead?
Mehdi Hasan goes head-to-head with Victor Gao, the former translator for Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping and vice president of the Center for China and Globalization, on President Xi Jinping's rule, China's foreign policy and its clampdown on dissent.
    Joining the discussion are:
Rayhan Asat - international human rights lawyer of Uighur descent and senior fellow at the Atlantic Council
Stephen Chan - professor of world politics at the University of London, School of African and Oriental Studies
Martin Jacques - author of When China Rules the World and visiting professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing

I get Victor's idea in theory. Criticize but offer your own solution that could improve things. But it simply doesn't work in practice in China because govt is so deeply insecure. Here's an example. "Zero covid was a disaster in China. The government should have followed the advice of the WHO and end its lockdowns which harmed more people than it helped." How would the government respond to this constructive criticism and 'positive' suggestion for improvement? (listen to the scientists of the world who were in full consensus that the lockdowns in China should end in 2022). You will get pilloried and blocked online for suggesting that the Chinese government harmed more people than it helped. And it's an insult to suggest that govt didn't follow worldwide scientific consensus which is true but makes them look bad. So in practice, you can never criticize.

A few people cannot divide a country, just like the people in your hometown cannot declare independence alone. Even if your whole village voted.
If this were allowed, there would be not just 200 countries in the world today, but maybe 2,000. This will undoubtedly plunge the earth into the consequences of a long-term war.

By the way, a country's former ruling party, after losing the support of the majority of the people, fled to one of the provinces with a handful of supporters and attempted to split the country, which itself violated the country's constitution.

Don't be so naive and just cover everything in just one over-generalized statement, there are not much details within and don't try to be affected by some simplified views. I agree that within China we are not as free as some western states, but imagine what would happen if we are holding "Communism" is great and start a propaganda in the west, I guess some people will also try to put out that fire in some ways since they support so-called their democracy and don't want to be challenged.

Compare it to the U.S. and all the wars it has initiated since the end of WWII, as well as its support of Israel the only apartheid country in the world. The U.S. isn't bothered by the lack of democracy in China ،they don't care about the Chinese people at all. The only thing that bothers the U.S. is the econoic and the military growth of China. They don't want to be overtaken by China, that's the only reason why the U.S. hates China.

Of course, he couldn't just give a number that he doesn't;t know it's like you ask Pompeo or Bolton or any US politicians how many prisoners in the US are on Death Row or even a simple question how many prisoners wrongly incarcerated are in Guantamp Penitentiary. The answer is no one could provide a clear number because they are not the wardens in those prisons. Then he stupidly said I got the number because he asked and inquired about it. If the audience was smart they should know this was a dirty tactic to pull. Mehdi is completely rude and arrogant. He just interrupts every single time when Victor is speaking, never letting him finish his sentence. How about you try to speak in Chinese then and see if you can even form a single sentence much less a conversation. Mehdi doesn't know how to hold a proper debate!

Victor's tone changed after Mehdi said "maybe you will disappear outside after this show"
This was Victor's moment of realisation and fear, and a time in the debate to re-establish his loyalty.
It is sad that fear can be so widespread and ingrained. It is just sad. People should never have to live in fear. Honestly even Victor, he is terrified of stepping out of line. Of course he will not start ranting about how he truly feels in a public debate like this. There was only one purpose of this "debate" to paint a very clear picture.

I visited Taiwan last year,I have seen how much it deteriorates over the decades. The same feeling when I visit many places of US. For what I see I don’t think Taiwan going the right way for its people even how much the media preaches its democracy. Talk to people there in Taiwan, they know their ruling party is corrupted and self serving. You need to travel, be on the ground, interact with local and not listen and believe everything online.

"Oh noo..Taiwan is corrupt and deteriorating.. Its time for them to establish single party dictarorship with China!"
Is that what you mean? By the way I don't know which part of the US you visited, but even if you visited Mississippi which is the poorest states of the US is four times more prosperous than China

The critique from Western nations, particularly the United States, regarding China's stance on Taiwan often seems inconsistent when considering America's own historical actions, such as the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy and subsequent annexation of the islands. Before directing criticism toward China, the U.S. should reflect on its own past actions and acknowledge the complexities of its history in relation to sovereignty and territorial expansion. A balanced approach would require a thorough understanding of both contemporary geopolitical issues and the lessons from past mistakes.

lmao so true. Im from Argentina and we are still fighting to get the Balkan Islands back from the UK. Western hypocrisy is so loud and obvious even when they expose themselves they think they ``won`` the interview. The guy (mehdi} supposedly arguing for free speech wouldnt even let gao speak, which in itself is utterly revealing, and reminiscent of western ``values`` imposing themselves on all the cultures theyve colonized and erased, murdered, and stolen their resources. happening to this day.
