    Hey, Kamon. I'm in southern Kentucky and you're quickly becoming my RUclips guru for bee stuff.
    I got my first bees, a nuc, in early July of this year. I've been feeding them sugar syrup this whole time, trying to bolster them with calories. They've grown so I now have them arranged in 2 brood boxes, 7-over-7 with a spacer blocking off the extra volume in the boxes. I found my queen and there's a bit of brood going on, but not a lot of stores...maybe 2.5 to 3 full frames of honey and less than that of pollen.
    I'm tempted to give them pollen patties to make sure they have some protein coming in, but I don't know *when* to give it. As you know, it's in the 80s for high temps these days; is now a bad time? Should I wait until it's cooler and any fall flow has stopped?
    Re: feeding through the winter... Do I feed pollen patties and a dry sugar source all winter long, or is there a point when I quit and just let them hibernate?

    Very good explanation. Maryland also has a short flow, and I have a colony with a supply and demand issue so it is good to know there is a substitute when necessary. In my case it isn't the availability of pollen, but the fact that I have a very weak colony that is in a recovery period after queenlessness when a number of them died off with no bees to replace them. Now they have a productive queen but seemingly not enough foragers and nurse bees to collect and feed the baby boom of larvae. 🤦‍♀️ So I may need this is a backup supply of pollen to make it easier. It seems like a can't hurt, may help kind of thing.

    I agree, a lot of miss leading information. In colder environments feeding is a necessity most years.

      Right around the time your bees get their first natural pollen we supplement with the patties

    I’ve been looking for a video about freezing pollen patties part way through their consumption to kill any eggs or larvae and break the breeding cycle, but I’m having trouble finding it again, was it yours @kamon

    you think your pollen patties are about the same as Dadants or Mann lake pollen patties? thanks!

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  5 лет назад +1

      I think k they are as good and are much cheaper. Keep in mind I am using ultra bee as the base so I am just changing the ratio a tad and saving money mixing it myself

    When should I start feeding pollen patties? I live in southeast Texas. Also, what kind of paper do you use to wrap the pollen substitute?

    • @dp.2766
      @dp.2766 3 года назад

      I’m in Polk County, and just got pattys from Texas Bee Supply in Dayton. I will feed sparingly starting Saturday when it warms up a bit. But remember that hive beetles are still alive and moving around. Keep an eye on them for SHB larvae, and pull it if you notice any. I peek in every other day. I need to feed a weak colony that were being overwhelmed by SHBs in November. Had to shrink them down to a 5 frame as population was down. The patties come wrapped in a parchment paper. Wax paper works too.

    What kind of patties was that? Where can i get that recipe to make it?]

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 года назад

      you have to have thick syrup to make it. 3 to 1. I buy it. 15 lbs of ultra bee and 32 pounds of syrup makes the patties

      I only have 5 hives. Can i make that recipe smaller and still work for my bees?

      @@kamonreynolds Hey Kamon, I made a bucket of the supplement following your video, 32lb + 15lb but I thought you had said you watered down the syrup. I used 1 to 1 and thought it ended up very liquidy so I added a few more lbs of ultra bee until it's a decent thickness. Now I see I was supposed to use a thicker syrup, lol. Will this still work okay? Thanks.
