  • For todays review I wanted to do something a little bit different. I've heard comparisons being made between Star Fox and Cybermorph for years now and a lot of people use this comparison to prove the Atari Jaguar was not 64 bit and actually worse than the SNES. Or something like that. But I think the truth is more that Nintendo knew how to make fun games well within the limitations of the time and Atari was attempting to push the envelope. And honestly, to my eyes, Star Fox doesn't look THAT much better...
As I state in the video I know nothing about game programming or the technology behind these games, so I'm just making opinions and statements based off what my eyes are seeing. I'm sure nobody will get upset if I get something wrong lol

    2. Make sure the hardworking people both new and old (from the old guard at Atari corp to the new developers keeping Atari alive) get the recognition that they deserve for their hard work
    3. Preserve the history of Atari in the video game hobby so that it survives long after us

Based on what the programmers said at PRGE, one of the biggest issues they had when developing games for the Jaguar was time. Atari just didn't give them sufficient time to fully develop the games. Perhaps, had that not been the issue, they could have made a better Cybermorph game.

While I agree with most of your negatives, I like the lack of music myself as it adds to the weird ambience the game has. The other thing mention is Cybermorph is probably rendering more polygons in just the ground than Starfox is doing for everything (Goraud shaded ground at that not flat shaded polygons or flat planes like Starfox). Not to mention the reason for the games name, that the ship actually morphs form smoothly while doing different things. You can also see the lighting on the Cybermorph ship is an order of magnitude better. Technically it is on another level altogether. Starfox is a tighter experience, and in the short term plays really well, but it is also surprisingly short and once done it looses some of its quality. After beating it I barely went back. Cybermorph I actually played way longer than Starfox and still like popping in for the ambience.

I think it's great that a lot of people seem to appreciate Cybermorph today because they sure didn't even just ten years ago. But I'm almost positive a lot of people watched the AVGN video and parroted his thoughts, because I did not think it was a terrible game at all.
I think it's too long and repetitive for the gaming masses but I also think that going in with lowered expectations is to this game's benefit. Because once you play it you realize it's surprisingly decent and fun.
Good points although I respectfully disagree on the ambience but maybe I'm in the minority there.

@@TheAtariNetwork Ambience - Probably the large amount of weed I was smoking at the time... It just feels very artificial though in a weird trippy fashion and the effects, visuals and sounds very much play into that. AVGN very much does things for the lols and a lot of things he picks on are already things the Jag gets some, mainly unfair, stick for - the controller, Skylar and so on, he clearly had no idea how to play the game based on his footage though, much as I enjoyed his early work.

Cool! I hadn't noticed how their draw distances are about the same.
When playing Star Fox I never thought about draw distance as where Cybermorph it's at the forefront.
Cybermorph appears to have shorter distance because of that speed. If Cybermorph was stuck at a slower speed, and viewpoint lower like Star Fox, with the same amount of time to react to objects...
It's nice how in Star Fox you can fly your ship freely around the area of your screen. As where Cybermorph you're always below the camera.
    I lost my point.
Oh yea,.. I guess the freedom to go fast is too much to handle, like when I had to learn to limit my speed in Gran Turismo.
    Great speed = Greater esponsibility.
The speed and free roaming was impressive and let's you know right away Jaguar has more power than Snes.
Even though it's easy to see why Star Fox is more enjoyed.
    great video!

Two completely different approaches to gameplay. Free-roaming 3D vs. on-rails. Starfox is just plain fun. Cybermorph is arguably deeper, but boring. I recommend Battlemorph as the realization of what the devs were attempting here.

@@stratfender89 well they where kinda made to compare. Atari obviously wanted something to compete with Star Fox so that was their answer but Atari had much less funds to do so. So ultimately their games in several cases was lackluster in comparison sadly.

I haven't played StarFox in probably a decade but I'll playthrough Cybermorph at least twice a year. I give it 3 Jag controllers. Battlemorph addressed all of Cybermorph's shortcomings.

It's apples vs. oranges in my opinion. Free roaming rendered worlds are far more demanding. Cybermorph was designed for the cancelled Panther. Battlemorph is far more of a Jaguar 3d type game. Don't get me wrong SF is a great experience on its own.

I like Cybermorph actually. Back when we still played Wolfenstein, Doom and Zone Raiders on PC, this would have gotten a lot of attention from us - if only we (as non-Atarians back then) even knew it existed over here in Germany 😂. Anyway, like it and like to play it for a couple of rounds today. It's more arcady in a way than Starfox is. Both have their merits.

Two things are missing in cybermorph : music during gameplay and a background in 2D. Regarding the music, at the launch of the system, they didn't know how to use the Cpu dedicaced to the sound.

Starfox never impressed me. Sure it looks great but it's not more impressive than Argonaut's Starglider II or Interphase or whatever DID created, like Epic, on the ST.
Same thing about Cybermorph. The shading was nice but I was not impressed at all.

Thanks for the review, Jon. I think your final rating is fair although I would also be good even with a three-controller rating. I look forward to how the rest of the Jag library stacks up. With Cybermorph establishing the line on what a two-controller rated game is, where would the other games rate? Looking forward to future reviews.
I have yet to play Star Fox so can't anything about the comparison. Having said that, I really respect Nintendo for the effort it puts into the quality of first party games. The company has always been more about the software/games and less about hardware specs.

Like the South Park Ski Instructor said, if try to play Cybermorph like Starfox you're gonna have a bad time!
The T-Griphon flies more like a hover ship as it doesn't fly at high altitude and you can't just press down on the thrust speed. That's why new players keep crashing into mountains and always get scolded by Skylar (There is an achievement based on that meme in Atari 50 BTW).
For those who would like to go around 3D environments in a hovercraft in a Jag game, I highly recommend Aircars as that's a better comparison to Cybermorph than Starfox.

Cybermorph was a game I completed on Atari Jaguar. Would give it a score of 7 out of 10. I liked the free roaming exploration, the look of the games terrains. The gameplay was good to my mind but certainly not great. Graphically Cybermorph was doing quite a lot, for a 3D exploration and collection shooter. The absence of music during missions for me, improved the game. Making it more immersive, personally I don't want music playing. When I'm supposed to be flying over alien planet landscapes. As they makes the game more arcade like. Yes most people seem to prefer that but I ain't one who does.
Another Atari Jaguar game, I liked and played a lot of was Hover Strike. Most people don't seem to like this game. But I do like these types of games, and traversing across alien landscapes in a vehicle. With you like the hero saving the day, shooting up the enemy baddies.
I never played Star Fox as I didn't own a SNES. But as it was an Argonaut Software development. The people behind Starglider series of video games. Which I have played I'm sure I would have liked Star Fox.

  • @stratfender89

@3:00 Yes, Cybermorph is a much more technically impressive game than Starfox. Some aspects such as the teleports are actually really well done where things do render pretty quickly and the game continues smoothly. To do that would require unloading a lot of assets from memory while reloading a lot in their place. The Jaguar does that really well.
Cybermorphs setback is it has too much content all at once. Some levels such as the planet with the large lake is incredibly fun as you have to fight swarms of enemies on the shore while collecting pods, but there are some planets that are just okay or brutal in difficulty in the first sector of planets. Kapitol comes to mind as large, and difficult and would not be a great introduction to someone first playing the game. While I think they should keep the worlds open, they should have limited the beginning to a few planets that were their best to get players hooked, and move to larger and more difficult levels so everyone could have a positive first impression.

Well i wish you also did put some pros & cons about starfox as well,i personally found starfox repetitive as well but it feels just so much more cinematic with it’s awesome intro and cut scenes and great music,
I personally think that the main reason why people do turn off from cybermorph is because of the annoying voice from that green head whose keep saying where did you learn to fly everytime you do hit something,
And to be honest,it’s fair to expect 4 times better graphics from cybermorph on the jaguar,am mean i bet even the super fx chip could render such visuals of cybermorph, since the jaguar is berally a 64bit machine,it’s fair to expect much more then this.

I think shooters in general need great music to motivate players to play for long stretches of time, since all of them tend to become repetitive after a while. I can't imagine Star Fox without its awesome soundtrack. However, Cybermorph isn't exactly a traditional shooter, in that it seems to rely much more on exploration (from what I understand, since I never played it), so the soundtrack may not be as essential. But the graphics had to be impressive, because of the whole "do the math" campaign. People were actually doing the math, and expected so much more from the Jaguar, considering it was supposed to produce better graphics than even the 3DO, which was "only" 32-bit

    • @TheAtariNetwork

I guess I could've done pros and cons for starfox but I wasn't entering with a mindset to review both, just compare them and see if the comparison made sense and was accurate. I think I even got away from that in the video honestly.
I like Cybermorph, but I think the masses won't. And history seems to support that, but Cybermorph is fun to me regardless. However, it's difficult to argue that Starfox isn't superior. Nintendo works great with their fun first philosophy and managed to work around the limitations of early 3D beautifully.
Pros for starfox off the top of my head would've been the solid gameplay, fantastic music and sound, decent replayability and large interesting bosses even with the limitations. Cons would've probably been that some levels are just more fun than others by a large margin to me, feeling limited in my ability to weave around obstacles in some situations, noticeable pop in (doesn't effect gameplay and was acceptable then but worth noting) and yes, things getting repetitive faster than I remembered. Probably would've been a 3 or 4 out of 5 but this is all off the top of my head with little thought.
Thanks for checking out the vid!
