I was there, 200 invited guests..Bono kept stopping as wasn't happy with various issues. On before U2 was Sinead O'Connor bald, heavily pregnant and largely unknown performed 3/4 songs without stopping or making a fuss ( looking at you Bono) and blew everyone away! Definitely the highlight of the evening. Thank you Sinead for the memories.
How I miss these days. This was few days before JT came out. Vividly remember as an exited 15 yr old, rushing up to Woolworths to get my copy before school on the Monday morning. And then skipping school listening to the masterpiece all day long. Completely blown away. Love to U2
Brick Top I did all the same,I loved U2 but as I watch this now Isee how the JT was their peak but also the time bono's head exploded.I mean why the F is he picking up a guitar at the end of Exit?. Sorry but his ego made me fall out of love with this once great band.
+Brick Top It was the evening that JT was released and after the gig the band went to a record shop in Belfast to sign copies at midnight. I was there at the filming of the show, it was huge to see them at such close proximity, even more so as we knew we were probably among the first to hear the tracks.
Nothing happened to this band. They were bad ass then and still are. They age. This is amazing. I think this is a rare glimpse into a crowd having no clue what's happening with this band(movement). I stand with the sons of Cain. Burned by the fire of love the fire I've loooove. These people had no clue what just hit them. Thank you for this video!!!'n
This was as absolute high point in U2's career, the still made great songs after this, but they never matched the passion they had during the Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree years
I'm not a U2 fan, but found the song "IN GOD'S COUNTRY" when I was watching the movie THREE KINGS. ( Great movie ,that I own. Haven't watched it in awhile) This time I let the credits roll ,all the way to the end.The movie closed with that song 🎵🎵 🔥🔥 .LOVED IT. Well done❗ Bono vocals. The lyrics. Their best song in my opinion.
Joshua Tree made them true international superstars....., but for me, Achtung Baby and the Zoo TV tour that followed was U2 at the height of their power.
The U2 Golden age begin with a great live performance recording hi quality Sound! 2 strong energetic dynamic powerful genuine & original smart Song. This is my favorite tracks of the most important Rock album of the 80s.
Remember watching this on tv at the time (and recording it on vhs)as not seen them for year or so after live aid and their amazing performance....this was the start of what became some of their best work ever which was the mighty Joshua Tree album... 🤘
+robertk2007 Even more, he constantly pushes his voice too far during concerts and frequently developed laryngitis. Then in the late 90s he had throat and/or sinus surgery. Pre-Pop album was one Bono, Pop and after has been a different Bono, vocally speaking. Really sad, but he hasn't let that hold him back!
Bono's live singing wasn't as good during the 90s as it was in the 80s seeing that the range of a lot of songs as lower (and his smoking habit didn't help) but his singing has been a lot more high energy and bombastic since the early 2000s
This was the day the Joshua tree was released. They launched it at 12am that night at Makin Tracks in Belfast. There were only 100 or so people in the audience as this was primarily a tv show.
I am not sure this is '86. Bono's hair way different on the "Conspiracy of Hope" Tour. I think this is early '87. Love the mix with Larry's drums so up front.
U2 didnt just perform these two tracks the show cased the whole of the Joshua tree here for the first time which actually took 45 minutes so BBC archive lets see the rest!
I agree with you weasesuit. I think this was late February '87 as i remember watching this in our local School Club and it was on the eve of TJT coming out. Watching this made us U2 freaks wet our pants as well as our appetites! He used to stay awake to drive the dreams he had away - love it!
This was there first appearance after years in the U.S. I ws home and caught it, performed for BBC local news. Went back to London and caught them at Wembley arena bussed up from W7 and paid £10 at the door, U2 used to to this to beat the ticket touts. Best 2 songs on album. "The bomb man" 🔥
What happened?? They grew, they got older man. Like you, like your parents, like everybody, like their audience. You can´t expect they will stay at the same position forever. Even if they were actually exactly like in this video, the audience won´t see them like before. The humans tend to think that old times are allways better, because your memory tend to remember the very first memories of something. Music is not only about the artists, but the way the listener listen to the music, and after so many years, so many concerts, so many groups, you can´t see them like before.
More than just age happened to U2 to be fair. During the early nineties they embraced technology, they injected a lot of humour, they incorporated dance music and became a very rich band in the process. They eventually deconstructed themselves and returned to their earnest ways of the eighties but c'mon lets be honest, they lost their way in the process. Other artists have retained their integrity while u2 have become some kinda kareoke version of themselves.
Exit has traces of "Over The Wall" by Echo & the Bunnymen from Heaven Up Here. Perhaps nobody credits the Bunnymen enough for helping to elevate U2 to where they are now...
The year is 1987. They also performed trip through your wires for the second time. But it it was the first time that they played it with the lyrics as we now know it. The first performance of that song in januari 1986 was even more raw with unfinished lyrics. When the songs are still fresh for U2 as well, they might not hit every note, but you can feel the exitement in the songs. In those moments they are at there finest Playing new songs before relative small audiences pure and raw
What is it with people and dates on here? The Whistle Test performance was broadcast on 8 March 1987. The Joshua Tree was released on 9 March 1987. Thise are THE dates. It's not up for discussion. Those are THE dates!
For me it is either Joshua Tree or Unforgettable Fire. JT is a much more polished album but I can get lost in the sonic landscapes of UF. Achtung Baby is great but it is a different mode of U2. Usually there are three groups of U2 fans, 80's, 90's and 00's. My favorite is 80's U2, they had such passion and earnestness and innocence.
this was before Joshua Tree..........watched it live at the time :o ......was first tv etc since Live Aid ....fans were a bit shocked at new direction after Unforgettable Fire .. awesome performance and still got it on vhs

Exit's best live performance is in the movie Rattle and Hum, simply emotional and memorable where the chorus of Van Morrison's Gloria is sung

EQ2snorkle Bono has added some very complimentary guitar to U2 songs. The end of Without Without You has Bono all over it.

Something happened alright. They got even better! xD
@@mathiasklein8143 They got worse JT was their peak, no doubt about it.

Rare mix where Bono's guitar is louder than The Edge's. ;)
Pretty sure that, is a sound mistake of the crew
@@carlosalgaba2401 well it was a great mistake
He actually plays good tho
Never a great idea lol
The mix is pretty bad. Can barely hear Edge's guitar.
These are actually my favorite two songs on Josua Tree, amazing to see them live finally for the first time after over 25 years.
I mean you could have watched Rattle and Hum
both great songs, great performance. Bono is on fire. This is when I really got into U2.
Powerful performance. Bono's voice was imperious.
Such a shame In God's Country never became a fixture in the live set, ditto A Sort of Homecoming.
well, IGC will be a fixture on the next tour!
Before notoriety, their message was true and vast. I miss these days.
sure miss this music!!!....oh if I could go back to 87 when I first heard this! Bono put every ounce of his soul in his music here😍😍😍
brilliant ! And I love being able to hear Bono's guitar for a wee bit of a change! :)
Not sure if that's a good thing ahah
He served 3 months in jail for serious assault on the guitar 🎸

Watched this live that day on the box. What a year '87 was to be for the band. Played their hearts out for months. Cheers
Before cellphones, over 5,000 satellites in the sky, Zoo TV, there was rock n roll at its finest. Rock n Roll U3 style !!!!
The Jimerator
wow, now THAT is a lost gem! Yippy for the post!
I was lucky enough to see this on TV when it was first broadcast...
They have talent !
I hope they make it 😄
the days before bono disappeared up his own arse(and i'm a massive fan)
I'm a massive fan too, but you said it exactly right.
gibbo1968 ...he was starting to cast an eye ass wards around this time...
I think it's hardest for Larry to deal with Bono's massive ego. Larry is probably the guy who has changed the least since 1976.
I think this was the first time anything from JT was heard publicly as I remember seeing it when it was first shown.
35 years later and Bono still hasn’t lost his touch on how to murder a guitar
He physically can't play guitar anymore actually, he mangled his left hand in a bike accident.
Que lindo!!!! Ontem, hoje e sempre!!! A maior e melhor banda do mundo para mim.
1986 good years i m remember i was 13 years old 😌😌😌😌
