I like the idea that employee engagement actually breeds productive conflict. And that it's a good thing.

'Unions' should be the employer. They should be providing the employer with reasons why their people should be their workers - better training, more product knowledge, etc. Labor and management should not be in conflict, they should be partners working toward the same goal not competitors working to maximize themselves.

@@walperstyle You can pay for faster surgery. Year lonjg waits for surgery is what happens when you get it for free. That's not a union thing. That's something we in the carnie business call standing in line. :P
Australia floats between 2 and 5 when it comes to healthcare in the world across various metrics. It is highly unionised, highly cost-efficient (number 2 in the world for cost VS effect) and makes a huge portion of its annual GDP from such services.
If Canada's healthcare system is 'failing' as you say (it's still top 10-ish in the world), then the problem is most certainly not 'unions'. See: UK, Australia, Sweden, Finland, etc)
Out of curiousity, what metric are you using to claim Canada's healthcare is failing?

I like it. I was discouraged from any kind of conflict from very young. To me the whole idea of conflict is new and exciting. Most people can't handle it. But I want to only be around those who can.

I similarly don't like conflict, but I do like the idea of productive conflict, change is always uncomfortable.

Personally if you have a strong EMPOWERED Human Resources(HR) team, there is no need for a Union. The HR team is supposed to be the balance of employees and leaders. HR has it's hands in everything, yet they're often perceived as proverbial "bad guys" from both sides depending on the circumstances. In reality they're there to make sure everything is right and just.
Employees should be able to go to their management team and if something doesn't happen then go to their HR team. The HR team is supposed to figure out with management what is feasible fix to the problem.
Businesses need to start listening to their employees and taking care of them. When you take care of your employees they will then turn around and take care of the customers/clients/business/etc. Employee engagement usually goes hand in hand with productivity and efficiency.

Except HR departments often don't "fix" the problem, but make it go away through borderline abusive "fact finding" interrogations - leaving many on edge or making tensions even worse.
I disagree that an empowered HR framework is the answer, but a reformed one - at least where hospitals are concerned.

I appreciate her optimism, however I work as a mid level manager with a union staff and all I see is the worst employees being protected. Rather than driving productive conversation and constructive changes. But hey maybe that's unique to our union.

A lot unions would drive companies to bankruptcy in a global space by protecting worst employees.
