You and the XTP delivered, Matt! What a fantastic bullet; consistent performance throughout the velocity range as well as affordability and easy to obtain.
@@tombraley3212 I will be interested in what velocity the 200 and 180 require for expansion. 200 grain at near 1000 is kind of classic 44-40 territory but I am guessing another 100 fps would be required.
I have the model 69 2.75 as well. I've tested quite a few loads in it and the one that I settled on is a 200gr xtp with 11.2 gr of Winchester 244 powder. Velocity was 1245. Recoil was a little more comfortable and muzzle flash was mild. This has become my go to mid-range 44 mag load. In the rifle I only got around 1550 fps but with this powder that's to be expected. Enjoyed your video. Keep 'em coming!
Just finished you 300 grain video and commented how we have used the 240 XTP for as long as Hornady has made them. Many, many deer have been successfully harvest from just a few yards out to 120ish. I took a doe at 75 yards with a Ruger like yours in the late 90s. I haven't harvested any with Revolver at that range since. But with various rifles we have taken many at good ranges. 23.5 grains of W296 or H110. Good groups.
@@guardianminifarm8005 All these XTP bullets are great. I took a doe at 120yrds last season with the 180xtp. it’s groups the best out of the Rossi and windage is right on the money too. The 240gr was pulling bout 12” left at 100yrds.
@kentuckyrangetime Oh my. That is interesting. We always have scope our rifles. Iron sights on revolvers. I have used a few different handguns over the years. I scoped a Super Blackhawk in the mid 80s for bear & boar but never hunted with it. I have hunted with 4 & 6 inch S&W and the 9.5 Super Redhawk. Typically I could keep 5 shots about the size of my fist at 50 yards with all my revolvers back in the day. But not so much nowadays. I only rifle hunt in firearms season. I kinda miss handgun hunting. The other bullet we liked & used a little was the Remington "Rosebud", the semi-jacketed HP. It performed well and was equally as accurate as the XTP. Look forward to more vids. Thank you.
I have shot Whitetail Deer and Pronghorn Antelope with 200 to 300 grain Hornady XTP’s and the Old exposed lead version. They all worked but the XTP version is more versatile and feeds better out of a Lever action.
I used the 357 XTP in an old Marlin 1894 and got a small black tail deer in 2003. Exit wound was 2 1\2 inches. Range was about 25 yards. My wife got her first white tail deer here in Idaho during 2022 with the same load. XTPs do what they we're designed to do! I'm letting a friend hunt with a new Henry rifle in 44 magnum and I am using the 240 gr XTP because they just work. Test bullets look the same as yours.
@@robertblumer2578 i figured as much, I just haven’t seen any available. Also I’d have to do a full set of ladders to work up to a good load since there not much data for that weight in .44mag. I have the 265gr FTX and was going to include it in this series but had the same issue finding data.
Now days out of my Marlin 1894 with its 20” barrel I use the Swift 240 grain A-Frame at 1,850 fps. Shot a Big WT doe at 75 yards facing me quarter on. Hit in the right front shoulder and found the expanded bullet in the outer skin of the left rear leg. Retained weight of 217 grains. More of a narrow mushroom vs the Hornady XTP.
@@robertblumer2578👍🏻. That’s some pretty nice results! From my .357mag test, the FP-XTP bullet, design more for rifles, tends to not open up as quick as the regular XTP giving less overall mushroom and deeper penetration.
I have done similar tests with the Hornady XTP and Speer Gold Dot/ Deep Curl 240 grain HP’s. I use my Thompson Contender with it’s 10” Barrel for velocities between 1,200 - 1,600 fps by changing the powder charges. 1,700 to 1,800 fps I use my Marlin 1894 with a 20” barrel.
@@robertblumer2578 how did the Gold Dots do?? Those are one of the bullets I’d like to load more but none of my local shops ever keep the GDs in stock. I guess I’ll have to order them online. 😉
@@bendetwiler7719 with the Ruger SRH, it was giving me 6-8” groups at 100yrds. I was resting on a shooting bag. 😉. That load was a tad bit hotter than the ones in this test though. That’s why I always hunt with the xtps. Great video! It’s good to see the 44 get some love. 👍
A great showing from this classic bullet design. The 240 gr XTP has always been a great 44 mag hunting bullet

The 265 grain Hornady FP designed for the 444 Marlin will expand out of a 44 Mag Rifle FYI.
